In order to be considered for the 4-year DDS program at the UCLA School of Dentistry, all applicants must have at least three years of coursework with the majority of applicants having four years of coursework. Likewise, applicants must have at least 90 semester units or 135 quarter units.

Applicants will be considered for admission if they first meet one of the following categories:

  1. U.S. citizen
  2. Permanent resident in possession of their resident alien card at time of application

To be considered for the UCLA Dental Post-Baccalaureate Program, an applicant must:

  • Have graduated or been on track to graduate college prior to the start of the fall quarter
  • Have a cumulative GPA between 2.65 and 3.25.
  • Comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background;
  • Demonstrated an interest in issues affecting underserved populations;
  • Submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation.

Prerequisites:

Eligible applicants must have completed a minimum of 75% of the required coursework with lab component (see Table #1), and 50% of required courses without lab component (see Table #2).

This will total approximately 28 semester units or 42 quarter units of college courses.

Required courses with 1-year of a laboratory component include: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

Required courses with no laboratory component include: Biochemistry, English Composition, and Biochemistry.

Please note, we follow UCLA 4-year DDS Program admissions guidelines regarding limitations on accredited community college course work (only 70 semester or 105 quarter units will be accepted). Also, online classes for web-based education will not be accepted.

Applicants are not required to have taken the Dental Admission Test (DAT).  However, if an applicant has taken the DAT, official score reports from the American Dental Association must be submitted along with your application. Please do NOT fax or email unofficial scores.

Oregon State University admissions

Step 1: ADEA CAAPID Application

Submit an online application through the American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists (CAAPID).  

The following documents must be submitted directly to CAAPID:

1. Educational Credential Evaluators Course-by-Course Report 

All PPID applicants are required to have their transcripts translated and evaluated by the Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) Course by Course report. The applicant should specify on the ECE application that they would like the evaluation to be sent directly to CAAPID. The following materials must be submitted directly to ECE for evaluation: 

  • Original certified college (post-secondary) transcripts
  • Original certified professional education transcripts
  • Official copy of the diploma and/or degree from the applicant’s dental school program

If accepted into the program, we will also require an official ECE report to be sent directly to the Office of Student Affairs. For more information please visit Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (We do not accept WES reports.)

2. Three Letters of Recommendation (all letters of recommendation need to be originals on letterhead, in English or English translation) 

The applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from each of the following individuals:

  • Dean or head of the applicant’s dental school (If the Dean during your time of study is not available to write a letter on your behalf, please refer to our FAQs for instructions.)
  • Dental school clinical instructor who is able to evaluate the applicant’s potential
  • A person of the applicant’s choosing, preferably someone with whom the applicant has worked with

We recommend that letters of recommendation be written within the last two years.

Step 2: PPID Supplemental Application Form

Begin the application process early and leave time to submit your application by our deadline date, postmark deadline is July 10, 2020.  Walk-ins will be accepted until 4PM PST on July 10, 2020.  There will be no exceptions to the deadline.

1. PPID Supplemental Application
Once CAAPID marks your application “Complete,” the PPID supplemental application will be emailed to you within two weeks. Email your completed PPID Supplemental Application with your Curriculum Vitae as a combined pdf, no larger than 5 MB, to [email protected] by the application deadline, July 10, 2020.

2. Application Fee – A non-refundable application fee of $150 U.S. dollars must be submitted on-line.

3. Curriculum Vitae/Professional Resume
Please include education, professional employment/organizations, research/publications, honors/awards, and community service.

Step 3: Instruction for the NBDE and TOEFL reports:

  1. National Board Dental Examination (NBDE), Part I and Part II – Effective March 2018, applicants must pass both NBDE Part I and Part II. Offficial NBDE score reports must be requested by the applicant online and submitted to the UCLA School of Dentistry, PPID Coordinator at [email protected].   2. English Language Proficiency (TOEFL)
    Official, sealed TOEFL scores must be submitted by the applicant directly to the Office of Student Services, Professional Program for International Dentists, UCLA School of Dentistry, 10833 Le Conte Ave, Rm A0-111CHS, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1762. 

Scores are valid for 2 years from the exam date, therefore score reports from exams taken in March 2018 to present will be accepted. For more information please visit the Educational Testing Service website.  Notarized copies or opened scores will not be accepted. 

The TOEFL exam is required of all applicants who did not complete their High School education in the United States.  Permanent residents, US citizens, students who hold degrees from the United States are all required to submit a TOEFL score report. For the internet-based TOEFL (iBT), you must meet the minimum score requirement in each of the four sections (listed below) OR have a total combined TOEFL score of 95 or higher to be considered. The TOEFL report “MyBest Scores” will not be considered.  Waivers will not be granted.

Certification of Finances

Qualified applicants who require an F-1 visa must complete a confidential financial statement before final admission. The certification is necessary for Oregon State University to provide a certificate of eligibility, which allows the applicant to apply for a student visa. 

 NOTE: Late applications will not be considered. Begin the application process early and leave time to submit your application by our deadline date, as we will not make any exceptions. Only complete applications that meet all minimum requirements will be eligible for review by the Admissions Committee.

Finalists invited for the second phase of our selection process will be notified via email, no later than mid-October, to participate in a skills evaluation and personal interview at the UCLA School of Dentistry.   

Acceptance notifications will be sent in mid-November. For the candidates offered admissions to the program, a non-refundable deposit will be expected within 21 days of acceptance. Formal letters of non-accept will not be distributed.
