Nanotechnology Graduate Programs
Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary science to a large extent. It combines the laws of physics, chemical processes and biological principles with one another at the nanoscale level. The high level of interdisciplinarity leads to the necessity that scientists need to acquire additional skills and knowledge, for example in the fields of characterization techniques, nanooptics, nanoelectronics, nanomaterials and biotechnology.
Target group for the masters in nanotechnology
The target group of this masters in nanotechnology graduate program is first and foremost professionals who are already working in industry, research institutes, universities and clinics, both nationally as well as abroad. The requirement for being admitted to this 3-year master program is a completed undergraduate course of studies in either engineering, science or medicine, taken at a university or polytechnic / university of applied science. Relevant working experience of at least one year has to be proven when applying for admission. With the application for acceptance to the distance learning course “Nanotechnology” one also has to hand in a written confirmation that a fitting institution is willing to supervise the applicant’s master thesis topic. An attestation of the institution must be submitted to the Student’s Administration Office by the end of the fourth semester. Admission to the course “Nanotechnology” is also possible if one has completed the certificate program “Nanobiotechnology” and the above mentioned eligibility criteria are met.
This course is held entirely in English – therefore good English language skills are a necessity.
Applicants may also be accepted who have relevant work experience but have not graduated for a university. They must hold a diploma qualifying for university admission, be able to prove several years of relevant work experience and pass an aptitude test. The program prepares the students for a professional career and ensures that they are able to improve existing products and processes within the organizations they work in, and this on a long-term basis. This course of studies therefore contributes to the sought-after and highly demanded qualified experts that are needed within the field of nanotechnology. After successful completion one is awarded the academic degree “Master of Science” (M.Sc.).
Schedule and organization
The standard course duration for part-time, vocational study including exam periods is six semesters. Interrupting one’s studies and returning to complete the program is possible. The course contents are provided as written study materials, developed specifically for distance learning. A weekly commitment of between 15 – 20 hours, depending on one’s previous experience and knowledge acquired, is required to successfully complete the program.
On campus events
One compulsory on campus weekend is held in the first five of the six semesters for all of the participants in the “Nanotechnology” distance learning program. The goal is to focus on and deepen the understanding of the course contents within the scope of lectures, tutorials and internships, to discuss questions that have cropped up regarding the study material and to reflect on the practical implementation of the contents. Written examinations are also a part of these on campus events.
The distance learning master program “Nanotechnology” encompasses a basic course of studies of one semester, focus studies that take four semesters and the master thesis itself for which one semester is planned. The fields of study include amongst others: Semiconductor theories, quantum computing, characterization techniques of nanostructures, screening methods in biology, nanooptics, biomaterials for transplants, processing ceramics and composites, using nanoparticles in medicine and pharmaceutics, nanoelectronics and nanomagnetism. The topics being taught are oriented on the possible career fields and working areas of the participants in the course. These include the semiconductor and electronics industries, the IT sector, the automotive sector, the chemical industry, biotechnology companies, optics and laser technology, the pharmaceutical industry, medicine and medical technology and the development of new materials.
The study fees for the master distance learning program “Nanotechnology” are EUR 750 per semester. In addition one has to pay a social contribution of EUR 90 per semester. The one-off fee for the master’s thesis is EUR 500. Starting from the third semester over the regular study time of six semesters, a reduced fee of 30 % of the semester fee is levied. The fee for the master’s thesis is not affected. These study fees cover all costs for teaching material, supervision, participation in the on campus events, term exams and all administrative expenses. However, they do not include any travel, accommodation, board or meal expenses for the on campus events. The study fees are not subject to German VAT and are tax-deductible.
Requirements For Masters In Nanotechnology
You can apply for the admission-restricted “Nanotechnology” distance learning degree from mid-May to mid-July of every year. Courses start at the beginning of October. The documentation is also available as a download and submission as a written application.
Similarly to traditional undergraduate or graduate programs, those attempting to enroll in an online nanoengineering program will be expected to submit various materials. Common admissions requirements derived from the programs profile below include:
- Official transcripts from high school or undergraduate program with a competitive GPA (e.g., >3.0)
- Scores achieved on the SAT or GRE (or any other relevant entrance exam)
- Personal essay
- Resume or CV
- Letters of recommendation
- Proof of volunteer or extracurricular activities outside of the classroom (only some programs)
- Research experience related to nanoengineering (especially for admissions to graduate-level programs)
Aspiring students generally are required to follow the same admissions timeline as traditional students. Those who wish to begin school in the fall should expect to submit applications by January, while anyone hoping to start in the spring may need to submit materials by the fall. This 30-credit-hour degree program does not require a thesis, a final oral exam, or any in-person residency. Classes available within this program include nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, biomedical sciences in nanoengineering, defects in solids, thermodynamics of materials, and the chemical processing of electronic materials, among others. Dr. Linyou Cao is an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University. His research interests include understanding and engineering the fundamental properties of photons and charge carriers in nanostructured materials towards developing novel optical and optoelectronic devices.
Dr. Carl Koch is the Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University. He previously worked as a research group leader with the Metals and Ceramics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and his was the first research to demonstrate that amorphous alloy metallic glasses could be made by ball milling certain elemental powder mixtures through the technique known as mechanical alloying.

Students at the University of California–Riverside have the chance to pursue an online master’s of science (MS) degree in engineering with a specialization in materials at the nanoscale. This program can be completed in as few as 13 months and has no on-campus requirements. Coursework covers a variety of high-level topics in nanoscience, including microelectromechanical systems and crystal structure and bonding, the thermodynamic foundations of materials, and microelectrochemical systems, among other areas of study. This program costs $833 per credit-hour.

Dr. Krassimir N. Bozhilov is an associate adjunct professor within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Riverside. His general areas of focus include electron microscopy and microanalysis of nanomaterials, zeolite structure and properties, crystal chemistry, and crystallography of ino- and phyllosilicates.
Dr. Ashok Mulchandani is a professor of chemistry and chemical & environmental engineering at the University of California at Riverside. His areas of research include nanobiotechnology and biotechnology for the creation of bioanalytical devices.
3.The Joint School Of Nanoscience And Nanoengineering
The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering based in Greensboro, NC offers an online MS in nanoscience and is currently developing other online degree programs in nanoengineering. The JSNN is a collaboration between the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). As of early 2018, the school provides four nanoengineering-related degrees: a professional science master’s (PSM) in nanoscience, the aforementioned MS in nanoengineering, a PhD in nanoscience, and a PhD in nanoengineering. Notably, it offers six nano-oriented research foci: nanobiology, nanometrology, nanomaterials, nanobioelectronics, nanoenergy, and computational nanotechnology.
JOSEPH L. GRAVES, JR.
Dr. Joseph L. Graves, Jr. is a professor of nanoengineering at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, where he also serves as the associate dean for research. He has published a number of books on various subjects, including The Emperor’s New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at the Millennium, and he was featured on the CNN Anderson Cooper program, “360.”
4. Other Online Nanoengineering Programs
In addition to the degrees mentioned above, there are various certificate programs in nanoengineering as well. For example, the Penn State World Campus offers an online undergraduate certificate in nanotechnology, comprising 18 credits at $555 (or $596) per credit-hour. The Harvard University Extension School also provides a two-year, five-course online nanotechnology certificate, which costs an average of $13,500 to complete. Finally, Oxford University also has a distance-based postgraduate certificate in nanotechnology—a field closely allied with nanoengineering—which takes nine months to complete.
