Industrial technology courses have been offered at Ohio University since 1904, when George McLaughlin, a 1901 electrical engineering graduate, began teaching woodworking as part of the “manual training” prioritized by the administration at the time. These applied technical courses, as well as Machine Shop and Mechanical Drawing, were transferred to a new Manual Training Department within a few years, which became the Industrial Education Department in 1920.

With the growth of the industry in the early 20th century, demand for technical training grew, leading Ohio University to build Super Hall to house the department with the engineering disciplines. In 1935, the renamed Department of Industrial Arts formally became a program in the College of Applied Science when the university was re-organized by President Herman James.

A shift in focus from teacher education to training for industry in the post-war years led to the development of the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (BSIT) degree program, the first of which was awarded in 1956. The college has since been renamed in honor of Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ and the department and its lab facilities relocated to Stocker Center. In 2010 the program name was changed to Engineering Technology and Management (ETM) to better represent the degree and the careers being pursued by our graduates. The department’s B.S. degree program has been fully accredited by The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering since 1979. Since 2014, the department has been led by Professor Todd Myers.

Men and women graduates from the M.E. program at Ohio University have gone on to work for leading companies including Boeing, Daimler Chrysler, General Electric, Goodyear, Honda, and NASA, and some have been hired to work for professional racing teams and experimental aircraft manufacturers. Some of our graduates have also used their ME degree as a robust preparation for the challenges of law school, medicine, and MBA programs.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. Degree in Mechanical and Systems Engineering.

 Mechanical engineering undergraduate students are eligible to participate in a 4+1 option that makes it possible to earn a mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree and a biomedical engineering master’s degree in five years.

Admission Requirements

If you’re a prospective student and would like to be considered for one of our certificate programs, you must apply for admission to each MEM certificate program of interest. If you’re already admitted to the MEM program, you will benefit from an abbreviated admissions process.

The Certified Lean-Six Sigma and Engineering Analytics certificates have the same admission requirements as the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program.

The Engineering Management and Engineering Leadership certificate requirements are the same as the MEM program, except that the requirements for 8 semester hours of calculus and post-calculus math are waived. A student who performs successfully in one or both of these certificates demonstrates the ability to perform well in graduate studies and may be in a stronger position to fulfill the mathematics requirements for the MEM degree or the other certificates.

Our electrical and electronics engineering faculty research, design, develop, and test new technologies like navigation systems or the latest cell phone technology – and they teach students how to do the same.

Computer engineers research, design, develop, and test new hardware and software, while computer scientists develop and analyze software and applications, and apply algorithms and computing technologies to fields like medicine and education.

Through our B.S. and M.S. degree programs in either electrical engineering or computer science, or our Ph.D. degree program in electrical engineering and computer science, you’ll experience what it means to create for good – developing tomorrow’s technology and improving society.
