In 1966, over one million dollars pledged by 7,000 local citizens to match funds from the state legislature supported the cost of buying 155 acres (0.63 km2) of land and constructing the first building, Founders Hall, which opened in 1968.

The RN to BSN option (offered online only) is designed for nurses who have completed an associate degree or diploma in nursing from an institution with accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). If a prospective student has not earned an associate degree or diploma in nursing, they can begin the 4-year Bachelors of Nursing degree – Undergraduate Admissions

Through collaboration with Ohio State’s regional campuses and the introduction of CARMEN, the university’s new distance learning system, the R.N. to B.S.N. program is now able to reach beyond central Ohio. This allows students greater flexibility to work, meet family responsibilities, and study while earning a B.S.N. in their local communities.

Program Description The program requires a total of 120 semester hours, including prerequisite, general education, and nursing courses. Some of the course work can be earned through previous courses taken at institutions of higher education, and/or associate or diploma nursing programs. A minimum of 30 semester hours must be completed at Ohio State in order for degree conferment.

Prerequisites The prerequisites may have been completed within the previous educational experience of the registered nurse. Any outstanding prerequisites must be completed by the year of application and before beginning the nursing courses. For complete details please click here: Prerequisites

Nursing Courses and General Education Students can access all required nursing courses online, allowing them more flexibility and convenience. The clinical nursing courses are tailored to registered nurses’ previous experiences and can be completed near home. Other non-nursing courses necessary for the baccalaureate degree can be fulfilled at any of the Ohio State campuses. These include additional courses in composition, math, history and humanities. Important Notes about Distance Tuition:

  • A distance program is a postsecondary educational program offered by an institution of higher education that leads to an academic or professional degree, certificate, or other recognized educational credential.
  • At Ohio State, a distance program is defined as a program in which 50% or more of the courses offered in a program are distance courses. Students enrolled in Ohio State Online programs are designated by being enrolled in the ONL (Online Learning) subplan.
  • A distance education administration surcharge of $100 per student per term is charged for any student enrolled in courses tagged as distance education. The revenue generated from this fee will fund 24/7 distance education support.
  • Non-resident students enrolled in Ohio State Online programs with the ONL subplan will have the non-resident surcharge assessed at $200 per term.
  • Site-based fees (e.g. COTA Fee, Recreation Center Fee and the Ohio Union Fee) will not be assessed for students enrolled in all distance education courses.
