How to Become an Occupational Therapist in Georgia
Georgia requires occupational therapists (OT) and occupational therapist assistants (OTA) to be licensed. The Georgia Board of Occupational Therapy is responsible for licensing OTs and OTAs in the state. To become licensed, an individual must graduate from an accredited occupational therapy program and pass an exam.
Where to Find Occupational Therapy Programs in Georgia
There are several schools in Georgia that offer OT or OTA degree programs. Subjects covered in these training courses include anatomy, medical terminology, psychology and physiology. Associate’s, bachelor’s and advanced degree programs are available.
With the exception of the pre-occupational therapy (pre-OT) programs and the program offered by Andrew College, the other programs discussed below are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), which is required for students seeking state licensure.
OT Schools in GA
Andrew College
Andrew College is located in Cuthbert. The school offers an Associate of Science in OT program that requires 64 semester hours of study. Classes cover topics like psychology, biology, team sports, and wellness.
Augusta Technical College
This college is situated in the city of its name, Augusta. It offers an Associate of Applied Science in OTA program that requires 94 credit hours of study. In addition to fieldwork, students learn about anatomy, medical terminology, physiology, and therapeutic adaptations.
Brenau University
Brenau University offers OT and pre-OT programs on two campuses in Gainesville and Norcross. The pre-OT bachelor’s degree programs focus on health science and psychology. The university will prefer graduates of these programs in the admissions process for the graduate-level OT programs. OT-focused classes include abnormal psychology, medical terminology, and human anatomy.
The school also offers a Master of Science in OT. This program is offered as a traditional daytime program on the school’s campus in Gainesville and a daytime hybrid/weekend program in Norcross. The traditional and hybrid programs require seven semesters of study, while the weekend program requires nine semesters of study. Classes include functional kinesiology and neuroscience. A thesis and clinical experiences are required.
An accelerated master’s degree program is also offered to students who lack a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, the university offers a pre-OT program designed for individuals who possess a bachelor’s degree but need to complete the prerequisites for admission to the OT master’s degree program.
Chattahoochee Technical College
This college’s campus in Austell offers an OTA associate’s degree program. Students complete both general education and major coursework in this 94-credit program. Applicants will need to take prerequisites in computers and medical terminology, and the college only accepts the best qualifying students. Core classes cover topics in OT, psychosocial dysfunction, and human movement. Fieldwork experiences are also required.
Darton State College
Located in Albany, this school enrolls about 6,000 students. The college offers an Associate of Science in OTA that requires 72 credit hours of study. Coursework in this program covers topics like assistive techniques and treatment methods. The curriculum also includes fieldwork experiences.
Augusta University
This university, formerly known as Georgia Regents University, is located in Augusta. This university offers a Master of Health Science in OT. This program, which requires a minimum of 89 credit hours of study, includes classes in topics like movement, neuroscience, and adult evaluation. Students also complete several fieldwork experiences, and a research project is due near the end of the program.
Middle Georgia State College
Middle Georgia State College is located in Macon. The school was established by a merger between Macon State College and Middle Georgia College. It offers an Associate of Science in OTA program that consists of two years of study. In addition to coursework, students in the program complete fieldwork and a project. Classes in the program cover topics like therapeutic media, pediatric practice, and adaptive techniques.
