Occidental College Transfer Overview

Occidental College is a private institution that was founded in 1887. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 1,839 (fall 2020), its setting is urban, and the campus size is 120 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Occidental College’s ranking in the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Liberal Arts Colleges, #42. Its tuition and fees are $58,426.

The Occidental campus is located in the suburban neighborhood of Eagle Rock, 8 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Downtown LA is brimming with opportunities for college students: internships, dining, nightlife and more. Freshmen must live on campus, and they are allowed to have cars. That’s a good thing, because the campus is within an hour’s drive of big-time attractions like Venice Beach, Disneyland and Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Parking on campus is free with a permit, and about two-thirds of students bring cars.

Students can choose from more than 100 clubs and organizations to get involved in on campus. Occidental has a handful of social sororities and fraternities, a gender neutral organization and a multicultural sorority. Even more students compete on the school’s sports teams, the orange and black Tigers, which are members of the NCAA Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Occidental students can also take classes at CalTech and Art Center College of Design, and can earn joint degrees at CalTech, Columbia University and the University of Southern California’s Keck Graduate Institute.

This liberal arts college is notable for its diverse undergraduate student body; about 50% of students are Caucasian, about 15% are Asian and another 15% are Hispanic, and about 5% are Black. Women make up more than half of the student population.

Occidental’s picturesque campus has been featured in many motion pictures, including “Clueless,” “Orange County,” “Jurassic Park III” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.” Notable alumni of the small school include Marsha Evans, former president and CEO of the American Red Cross; Andrea Elliott, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times; and Robert Richter, a documentary producer whose work has been featured on major stations like PBS and the Discovery Channel. Former President Barack Obama attended Occidental for two years before transferring to Columbia University.

Be a high school graduate or show proof of completion of your GED.

Complete at least one semester (16 units) of academic courses at an accredited college or university by the time of application AND have completed two semesters (32 units) at the point of your anticipated enrollment. Please note that we do not accept first-year spring transfers. (More info below on transferable credits, general education requirements, and major requirements.)

Submit your SAT or ACT scores (optional).

Be prepared to enroll at Occidental full time. Full-time status is defined as enrolling in 12 academic credits (usually three courses) per term. Please note, to make adequate progress toward graduation, 16 units (usually four courses) must be completed each term.

Although we accept applications from any student who meets the above criteria, our most competitive applicants usually possess the following characteristics:

  • Enrollment at an accredited college or university for at least one year (two or more semesters)
  • A history of carrying a full course load (typically defined as three to four academic courses)
  • Maintaining a 3.6 GPA or better in academic coursework

Transferable Credits

As a transfer, you must spend a minimum of two years at Oxy to earn your degree. This means you need to complete 64 of 128 total units at Oxy. However, transfer students are eligible to participate in Oxy-sponsored study abroad and exchange programs (which qualify toward your two-year residency)

If you are offered admission to Oxy, the Registrar will provide a preliminary evaluation of your transcript(s). They will assign credit for transferable work, determine your standing (junior or sophomore), and inform you of additional general education work you need to complete.

  • 32 transferable units from other institutions make you a sophomore
  • 64 transferable units from other institutions make you a junior

Occidental College General Education Requirements

Occidntal College has a 37% acceptance rate ranking it #20 in California for lowest rate of acceptance. Last year, 2,752 out of 7,501 applicants were admitted making Oxy a highly competitive school to get into with a lesser chance of acceptance for qualifying applicants.

Our general education program is called the Core Program. Transfers are not required to complete all Core requirements before they join Oxy, but we do look at the breadth and depth of a student’s curriculum when considering admission. (Please be aware that Oxy does not offer remediation courses.) Our General Education Worksheet can help you develop a plan before you apply.

Major Requirements

Major requirement vary by department. We expect incoming juniors to arrive at Oxy having already completed classes in their intended major. Those students interested in Economics are expected to have completed coursework in calculus, microeconomics, and macroeconomics by the time of enrollment at Oxy. Given the demand for the Media Arts and Culture (MAC) major and the particlar sequencing of classes, transfer students are not able to pursue the MAC major but are welcome to consult with MAC faculty in developing a five-course MAC minor.

The application requirements for first-year students are different from those for transfers and returning/current students. International students are required to submit additional forms.

We extend financial aid through merit scholarships, need-based grants and scholarships, work-study and student loans to meet the various needs and circumstances of our students. Oxy meets 100% of a student’s demonstrated financial need. Our aid programs often make Oxy’s cost comparable to those of public institutions.
