NYU Steinhardt Transfer Acceptance Rate

Last Updated on December 23, 2022

The NYU Steinhardt Transfer Acceptance Rate has always been a mystery to me. Even after I was accepted and enrolled, I still had no idea how many students from my class were there on transfer.

To be admitted to Steinhardt as a transfer student, you must apply to the university as well as your desired major. While this may seem daunting, it isn’t an insurmountable task.

Steinhardt has Transfer Acceptance Rate of 27.3 percent for the class 2018-2019. You can think about this as the percentage of admitted students who chose to enroll at Steinhardt after being admitted. This is a higher number than [one] at Columbia University .

NYU is one of the best universities on the planet. There is no doubt about that. The academic level, faculty and campus experience make this university one of my favorites. But it’s not cheap at all. That’s why NYU offers affordable tuition for most in-state residents and out of state students even though it’s one of the best universities in the world.

nyu transfer credits

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development is focused on preparing students for careers that span the arts, education, communication, health, and the media. The school offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs for students interested in the creative arts and more. But how does one prepare for the admissions process at NYU Steinhardt?

We want to reward the hard work you’ve done in high school or college. Which is why, after you have been admitted, your NYU school, college, or department will determine which of your previous courses will carry over. Typically, we award the following credit amounts:

  • First-Year Students: Up to 32 credits
  • Transfers: Up to 64 credits

After you are admitted, the school, college, or department that admits you will determine how many college and high school (if applicable) credits will carry over.

Credits/points obtained through a certificate program or a vocational training program will not likely transfer to NYU.

High School Courses

A note about advanced standing credit and COVID-19: We will be granting credit as normal for AP, IB, & A-Level exams taken in spring 2020. Refer to the guidelines below for information on receiving credit.

AP credit/advanced standing may be awarded if:

  • Received scores of 4 or 5
  • Tests taken before graduation

IB credit/advanced standing may be awarded if:

  • Received scores of 6 or 7 on higher level exams
  • Tests taken before graduation

Note: Results must be sent directly from the College Board (NYU code is 2562) or the International Baccalaureate Organization.

College/University Courses

If you took college courses while still in high school or while attending another university or college, we’ll need to see all transcripts to determine how many credits carry over to NYU. Contact your NYU school, college, or department of interest for their specific requirements for awarding credit. Below is a guide of what you might expect to receive credit for.

College Courses Taken While in High School

Credit may be awarded if:

  • You received a grade of “B” or better
  • NYU offers corresponding courses
  • In most cases, courses were taken at a college/university, with college/university students, and taught by college/university faculty.
  • Courses were not used to satisfy high school graduation requirements

College Courses Taken After High School

Credit may be awarded if:

  • Received a grade of “C” or better
  • Courses have been taken within last 10 years
  • Courses were not “Pass/Fail”
  • In most cases, courses were taken at a college/university, with college/university students, and taught by college/university faculty (online courses evaluated on case-by-case basis).
  • For Spring 2020 courses only: Given COVID-19-related disruptions, the following exceptions will be made to NYU policy:
    • Courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis (or for which other non-A-F grades were awarded as exceptions to standard academic policy) can be transferred for credit towards the NYU degree, provided that there is a transcript notation or a letter from the institution confirming that the Pass or other non-A-F grade is equivalent to a C-minus or higher; the minimum A-F grade for transfer eligibility is C-minus.

Transfer Students

Please keep in mind that:

  • Once enrolled at NYU, expect to take at least 64 additional credits to earn a bachelor’s degree.
  • In some cases, NYU Steinhardt may accept up to 72 transfer credits. This does not apply to other NYU schools and colleges.
  • Generally, we don’t award credit for life experiences, such as work, internships, and military service.
  • After you’re admitted to NYU, you’ll be able to go online to see a preliminary statement of how much credit you’re likely to be awarded.
  • Your NYU school, college, or department has final say on which credits will be honored.

Other NYU Campuses

NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai do not offer credit for any examinations or previous coursework.

The NYU Steinhardt Transfer Acceptance Rate is the rate at which students transferring into the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development are accepted. The transfer acceptance rate can be a useful metric for judging how selective a school is and how difficult it is to enter. It’s important to note that the NYU Steinhardt Transfer Acceptance Rate should not be used in isolation when evaluating post-secondary schools. Instead, it should be paired with research on other important factors such as graduation rates and student demographics to get a complete picture of what it’s like to study at a particular college or university.

Internal transfers are current NYU students who want to transfer from one NYU school or college to another. If this applies to you, here’s what you need to know:

Are there restrictions to applying?

The earliest you can apply for internal transfer admission is the second semester/term of consecutive full-time study at your current NYU school or college.

If accepted, you would begin your study at the new NYU school or college the following semester. The earliest you can begin your study at the new NYU school or college would be the first semester of your second year.

The latest semester/term for which you can apply for transfer admission is the end of your second year of study at NYU. The latest students can begin their study at a new NYU school or college is the first semester of their junior year. Typically applications to transfer between NYU schools and colleges are not permitted during or after the junior year.

Please note that some programs are open only to Fall or Spring applications and may have additional requirements such as an audition or portfolio, minimum GPA, or completion of required courses. It is strongly recommended that you check our Additional Program Requirements page before beginning the internal transfer process.

If you do transfer internally, you must meet all of the degree requirements (including core curriculum/general education and major-specific requirements) of your new school or college. Differences between your current and new requirements may result in your needing additional time to meet your new degree requirements. Since we want you to graduate within four years, if you are currently in your third year, we encourage you to work with your academic advisor to explore alternative options to transfer admission to meet your educational goals.

If you want to change programs within the same school or college you should contact your current school or college’s advising office.

How do I apply?

Complete the NYU Undergraduate Internal Transfer Application.

Please note: NYU will only allow one application to a program per term. If you apply to more than one program per term, your additional applications will be withdrawn automatically.

Is there an application fee?

No.

When is the deadline?

  • Spring start: November 1
  • Summer or Fall Start*: March 1

*First-Year students admitted to a spring start program have a fall internal transfer deadline of July 1st, with the exception of Dance and Film & TV which have a deadline of April 1st.

Note: NYU sets deadlines so as many internal transfers as possible can pre-register in their new school or college. Applications submitted after the deadline are considered on a space-available basis.

We will discuss the transfer process, navigating college life as a transfer student, and anything else we find relevant to the community. So please take some time and look around–we are sure there is something here that will interest you!

Admission for transfer students is highly competitive. NYU’s evaluation will focus primarily on your college/university grades and your high school/secondary school performance. Our most competitive applicants have completed at least 32 credits/points of coursework by the time they enroll at NYU.

If the following applies to you, follow the instructions below to apply as a transfer student:

  • You have completed the equivalent of a United States secondary school education (approximately 12 years of formal education starting at age six), and have either an appropriate diploma or leaving certificates.

AND any of the following apply to you:

  • You are currently or have been enrolled as a degree-seeking student at a college or university that is regionally accredited in the U.S.;
  • You are currently or have been enrolled as a degree-seeking student at a college or university outside the U.S. that is nationally recognized by the country’s primary accrediting council/agency;
  • You are currently or have been enrolled in a non-degree seeking program in the U.S. and will have completed 24 semester credits or more by the time you plan to enroll at NYU.

If any of the below apply, you should submit a first-year application:

  • You are participating in a dual-enrollment program, even if you are earning enough credits for an associate’s degree. (Dual-enrollment means that you are in high school and also in a college-level program.); or
  • You are currently enrolled in a college or university program in the United States that is not regionally accredited; or
  • You are currently enrolled in a non-degree seeking program in the United States after high school completion and you will have fewer than 24 credits complete by the time you plan to enroll at NYU; or
  • You withdrew from all your college level classes and have not received any grades for college coursework.

*If you’re unsure of your degree-seeking status or accreditation of your most recent school, we recommend you contact your school’s registrar’s office.
