Nurses play a critical role in the recovery of patients in every healthcare environment. All nurses – including certified nursing assistants (CNAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and registered nurses (RNs) – are at the forefront of delivering quality healthcare to the residents of Virginia Beach.

Overview of nursing programs
Despite the shared objective of all nurses, each nursing role requires a unique level of education. CNAs must only complete a brief training program and pass a state-administered examination. LPNs require a lengthier 12- to 18-month certificate program, and they must pass the strenuous NCLEX-PN national licensure exam. RNs may choose one of four education pathways: hospital diploma, associate’s degree in nursing (ADN), bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), or direct-entry master of science in nursing (MSN). Regardless of pathway, all aspiring RNs must pass the NCLEX-RN national licensure exam.

Tidewater Community College

With campuses in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, TCC has been offering workforce development services and higher education programs since 1968. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits the academic programs at TCC, and its associate’s program in nursing is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing.

Nurse Aide Training Certificate

The nurse aide training certificate program offers students 120 hours of instruction in nursing theory and clinical practice to be able to help registered nurses oversee general healthcare of patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and at home. Coursework and labs provide training in helping patients to dress, bathe, and exercise, as well as in safety, infection control, emergency response, and healthcare monitoring. Program graduates are eligible to take the Certified Nurse Aide Exam for certification in Virginia.

Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

This program emphasizes the development of skills in assessment, critical thinking, collaboration, therapeutic intervention, and healthcare management. To enroll, students must carry personal liability insurance, provide proof of required immunizations, pass a criminal background check, and meet program health requirements. Core studies include anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nursing concepts, healthcare ethics, and microbiology. Students learn to use lab equipment for patient care and practice different types of nursing, such as maternal/newborn and medical/surgical, during clinical fieldwork. Full-time students can complete this program in five semesters. Credits from the program can be transferred to a 4-year nursing school.

Old Dominion University

The main campus of Old Dominion University, which was founded in 1930, resides on 200 acres and houses 30 academic buildings. The School of Nursing is located in the Health Sciences Building and provides students with access to state-of-the-art lab equipment. All nursing students must carry personal liability insurance, be current in CPR certification, and be up to date on required immunizations.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree

The BSN degree program is offered as a pre-licensure or post-licensure track. Pre-licensure is designed for students with no previous nursing experience. Coursework covers nursing theory, concepts, and practice fundamentals before moving on to health assessment, pharmacology, therapeutic treatment, and nursing specialties, such as gerontology, mental health, and infant care. Clinical practice trains students in areas such as the management of infections, critical illnesses, rehab, and childbirth care. Graduates are prepared for the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.

Registered nurses seeking career advancement can enroll in the post-licensure RN-BSN track, which consists of both on-campus and distance learning options and a curriculum similar to the pre-licensure track. Another post-licensure option is RN-BSN/MSN, in which RNs who meet specific criteria can apply for the MSN program while still earning their BSN degrees.

Master of Science in Nursing

Master’s students can choose from six specialty options, including family nurse practitioner, pediatric nurse practitioner, and neonatal nurse practitioner. All specialties focus on advanced theory, research, leadership, and holistic health, as well as individualized training. For example, the nurse anesthesia program emphasizes pediatric, trauma, neurological, and vascular cases, with students learning anesthesia techniques through partnerships with clinical facilities in the area. The women’s health practitioner program trains students in adult primary care services and provides clinical experiences in women’s clinics and private OB-GYN practices.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Students who have completed a BSN or an advanced nursing degree are qualified to enroll in this program, which can be taken on a full- or part-time basis. The three focus areas are advanced practice nursing, nurse executive, and nurse anesthesia; they emphasize leadership, research, and expert clinical practices. Students learn about innovative healthcare technologies, advanced skills in diagnostics and patient care, healthcare for vulnerable patient populations, and quality outcome assurance. A capstone project is required.

Norfolk State University

Norfolk State University’s Department of Nursing & Allied Health has been serving students for over 50 years. It was created as a result of a nurse shortage in the 1950s, and is home to one of the first associate’s degree programs in the nation. All students admitted to the nursing program must have passed a criminal background check, carry malpractice insurance, be certified in CPR, and have current immunizations. Those who are not yet RNs must also take and pass the National League of Nursing RN Preadmission Exam.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

This program features two tracks. Those with a non-nursing degree follow the second-degree track. Students with an associate’s degree in nursing may choose the RN-BSN track. Students receive nurse training that may include biology and science course prerequisites, as well as nursing theory, health assessment, nursing care, pathophysiology, ethics, and nursing leadership. Graduates will be prepared for the NCLEX-RN exam.Next: View SchoolsLink to this page

Outstanding Education for Remarkable Careers

We’re committed to helping our graduates make impact in their professional and personal lives. We applaud our nursing alumni and the difference they make. Check out what some of our nursing graduates have to say.

Adrienne Hampton 2016Adrienne HamptonGrad AlumniCLASS OF ’16Master of Science in Nursing

“I can truly say that during my experience at South University I have only encountered positive, encouraging, intelligent, and professional staff who want their students to be successful. The online courses have been challenging but knowledge enhancing as well. I have learned discipline and have decreased my test anxiety through weekly quizzes, our midterms and final exams. Moreover, the Practicum experience has exceeded my expectations by allowing me to apply what I have read, researched, and studied into practice”

Samira Monet' Hayes 2013Samira Monet’ HayesGrad AlumniCLASS OF ’13Bachelor of Science in Nursing

“If it was not for South University professors and clinical instructors, I would not have the foundation and knowledge-base to be a successful, critical thinking nurse. Education is the key, simple and true. If I had not earned my degree I would not be in the position I am in today, nor would the opportunities that present themselves to me be available.”

Shirrelle M Everett 2015Shirrelle EverettGrad AlumniCLASS OF ’15Bachelor of Science in Nursing

“It took me almost ten years to realize that without an education I would be stuck working for minimum wage at dead-end jobs, I was a single mother of two children living on welfare. South University allowed me to gain the knowledge and skills needed to advance my career at my own pace. My education has enabled me to take care of my family.”

Lisa Godwin 2009Lisa GodwinGrad AlumniCLASS OF ’09Bachelor of Science in Nursing

“When I graduated, I passed the NCLEX and quickly got a great job as an RN. I felt very prepared for my new role and within less than five months, I was a charge nurse for a 36-bed med-surg unit. I’m very glad I chose South University for the start of my nursing career. My education gave me a great foundation and has made me a better nurse and practitioner.”

Emily Han 2015Emily HanGrad AlumniCLASS OF ’15Master of Science in Nursing

“By allowing me to continue working during school and applying new knowledge, as well as creating my own preceptor experiences in an area of interest, I was able to carve my way to a successful business and many great, relevant connections. I love that my degree and knowledge have helped me see the limitless opportunity we have as nurses. The freedom and excitement of my new career is something that I never could have imagined, but I look forward to innovating and paving the way for others to do the same.”
