What It's Like To Be In Nursing School During A Pandemic | by Katie Couric | Wake-Up Call | Medium

In the United States, we currently have among the highest maternal and infant mortality rates of all developed nations. Despite the fact that women in the U.S. are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than in any other country, our use of technology is among the highest in the world. Fortunately, other countries demonstrate that improving maternity care does not involve increasing medicalization; rather it focuses on providing women with midwife attendants during labor, birth and the postpartum period. This book discusses how this outcome may be accomplished.

Nurse-midwives provide primary care to childbearing individuals in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings including hospitals, homes and birth centers. They provide care that is informed by a core beliefs in patient autonomy and the importance of supporting physiologic processes, including birth.

Graduate of our nurse-midwifery specialty program, and you’ll have a set of clinical skills and knowledge that will prepare you to be a primary care provider for women across the lifecycle—from adolescence, to college, career and family. With hands-on training at Illinois Wesleyan University’s full-functional, state-of-the-art hospital, you’ll help your patients maintain their health every day. You’ll deliver babies and offer emergency care for injured patients. You’ll educate families about how to prevent disease and detect symptoms early. And you’ll take the lead on health initiatives that promote wellness in your community. The specialty will be nurse-midwifery only.] A WHNP is a registered nurse who has completed advanced education with a focus on the primary health care needs of women across the life cycle, with emphasis on conditions unique to women from menarche through the remainder of their lives. The specialty is dedicated to increasing service to vulnerable and underserved individuals and families. We adhere to the philosophy of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), but our unique specialty values are captured by the specialty’s own mission, philosophy, purpose and objectives, which we encourage all applicants to review prior to applying.
