Nuclear Physics Pdf

Nuclear Physics is a branch of physics that studies subatomic particles and their interactions. Nuclear physics should not be confused with atomic physics, which studies the atom as a whole, including its electrons. It is an interdisciplinary science that links the fields of particle physics, atomic physics, and condensed matter physics.

Nuclear physicists are currently researching the properties of various nuclei and the design of new nuclear reactors. They also explore the processes by which such elements are synthesized from lighter nuclei in stars, supernovae, and in naturally occurring reactions such as those that power the Sun.

Nuclear physics is the field of physics that studies the building blocks and constituents of atoms. The most commonly known applications of nuclear physics are nuclear power generation and nuclear weapons technology, but the research has provided application in many fields, including those as diverse as medicine and art conservation. Research in the field began more than a decade before the discovery of the first atomic nucleus by Ernest Rutherford in 1911. The field of particle physics evolved out of nuclear physics and the two are often studied together.

Nuclear physics is primarily concerned with nuclei, which are made up of protons and neutrons (except for hydrogen-1, which contains no neutrons). Although their abundances differ, each of these components has approximately a 1/1000 ratio relative to each other. Nuclei also have a property called spin; this is unrelated to angular momentum (spin angular momentum) as it appears in quantum mechanics or classical mechanics. A nucleus can be described as being “spherical” if it has no overall electrical charge distribution, or being “deformed” if it has oneā€”the latter case includes all isotopes having unusual proton/neutron ratios or hypernuclei.[1]
