Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism has a famously low acceptance rate. In 2019, the school admitted just 26 percent of applicants.
While this may seem like an exceptionally low number, it’s actually par for the course at Northwestern. In fact, the school has been consistently turning away more than three out of four applicants every year since at least 2005.
The school’s most recent acceptance rate was 5 percentage points lower than in 2018. It was also 3 percentage points higher than in 2017 and 4 percentage points higher than 2016.
Medill’s acceptance rate has fluctuated between 25 percent and 27 percent over the last decade. But it has never dipped below 22 percent or risen above 30 percent (2018).

Northwestern University was founded in 1851 as Evanston College and became a four-year institution in 1861 (the same year that it opened its law school). It gained its current name in 1870 when it merged with nearby Evanston Township High School to form a larger institution known as North-Western University (or NU). In 1881, it became a charter member of the Big Ten Conference and changed its official name to Northwestern University.
