Work of a Neurosurgeon

A Neurosurgeon, as mentioned earlier, performs surgeries to correct a neurological problem. This could include removing a brain tumour, performing a surgery on the back, etc. A neurosurgeon could be concentrating on a specialized field, such as paediatrics, spinal problems, tumours, etc. In addition, a neurosurgeon may have to work in conjuction with a neuro physician, a physiotherapist or a psychiatrist for post-surgery care.

Some neurosurgeons also take up teaching assignments at hospitals and medical colleges & conduct seminars related to their field.

Skills required to become a Neurosurgeon

Like any doctor, a neurosurgeon must have the ability to deal with adversities and stress. Establishing a relationship of trust with the patient and feelings of compassion, not to mention patience & perseverance, are equally necessary.

Above all, steady hands and stamina are a must given the nature of surgical procedures. A neurosurgeon could spend hours in an operation theatre without food or water, with complete focus on the surgical procedure being done.

Educational requirements to become a Neurosurgeon in India

A student wishing to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon must appear for the Common Entrance Test (CET) after passing Std. XII. At the Std.XI & XII levels, the students should have taken up English and medical subjects, namely physics, chemistry and biology (botany & zoology). After successfully passing the CET, the student does MBBS.

On getting an MBBS degree, you have to do an MS in general neurosurgery & then an M.Ch. in neurosurgery (this is a 5 year course). All these degrees amount to about 14 years of education.

Salary of a Neurosurgeon in India

When a neurosurgeon works in the public sector, his/her pay scale is as per the norms of the Sixth Pay Commission. Depending on the post, a neurosurgeon in the public sector can have a starting salary of Rs.40,000/- and go up to nearly Rs.1 lakh for higher posts & more experience.

In the private sector, on the other hand, a neurosurgeon can start earning at Rs.1lakh & earn anything up to Rs.2 lakh. Of course, setting up one’s private medical practice is no easy task!
