The Department of Computer Science at the University of Houston was founded in 1967 and is considered one of the first established in the country. Computer science is the study of computers and computer systems. Unlike electrical engineers and computer engineering, computer scientists deal primarily with software and software systems. This includes theory, design, development and application.

Major research areas in computer science include artificial intelligence, computer and network systems, security, database systems, human-computer interaction, vision and graphics, numerical analysis, and language. Programming, Software Engineering, Computational Theory

Knowing how to program is essential for computer science research, but it is only part of the field. Computer scientists design and analyze algorithms to solve programs and study the performance of computers and software. Admission is somewhat competitive in computer science. While it is possible to be admitted if you are missing one or two of the requisites, the majority of those admitted to the program have completed all 8 courses. If you are admitted but lack one or two of the prerequisites, you must pass the corresponding placement exam within the first 5 course days of your first semester. If you fail the placement exam (or decide not to complete the placement exam), you must complete the equivalent course within your first two semesters.   7. Three (3) recommendations – you can submit the names and emails of your recommenders in the application. A separate email will be sent to your recommenders asking them to complete an online recommendation form and submit a letter.

Considerations

Acceptance into our graduate program is based on a competitive review of an applicant’s academic background, grades in prerequisite/deficiency/leveling coursework, GRE scores, recommendation letters, resume, and personal statement. If an applicant is weak in one area of the application, but strong in all other areas, it is still possible to be admitted. If all areas are weak, it is not considered competitive. Below are example profiles of competitive applicants:

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related field
  • 3.0/4.0 or higher cumulative GPA in last 60 hours
  • Grades of B- or higher on ALL prerequisite/deficiency/leveling coursework
  • GRE total of 305 or higher (if applicable)
  • Recommended GRE quantitative of 155 or higher (if applicable)
  • In addition, international applicants are REQUIRED to have a 79 or higher on the TOEFL internet-based test or at least a 6.5 overall on IELTS
  • For Ph.D. and MS-thesis applicants, additional consideration is given for research experience and skills. In the personal statement and/or resume/CV, applicants should highlight their research experiences, research interests, as well as the UH Computer Science faculty of interest.

The following policy is taken from the UH Graduate Catalog

Students admitted to the graduate program of the Computer Science department must have taken Calculus I, Calculus II and Linear Algebra before being admitted to the program. In addition they are required to demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency in computer science. Level of proficiency is defined to mean either (a) having successfully passed an equivalent course, as determined by the Director of Graduate Studies, for each subject listed below, (b) complete the corresponding course with a grade of “B-” or better at the University of Houston, or (c) successfully pass a department placement exam in each of the required subjects.

Equivalent Coursework – evaluation of equivalent coursework* for each subject listed below will be determined by the Director of Graduate Studies at the time of initial advising.
Completion After Admission – upon entering the graduate program, students may remedy deficiencies by taking courses* from the list below and securing at least a B- grade. Any course in which a grade of “B-” or better is not made must be repeated the following semester. Each course can be taken a maximum of two times to obtain the required grade of “B-” or better.
Department Placement Exam – A student must submit to the Director of Graduate Studies a request to take department placement exams(s) prior to the first day of their first semester. If approved by the Director of Graduate Studies, the exam(s) must be completed within the first five class days. The result of the department placement exam(s) will be reported by the tenth class day and included in the student’s academic file. If the student fails the department placement exam, the assigned required course must be taken no later than the semester immediately following.
Courses taken to remedy deficiencies will not be counted in the total number of credit hours required for the graduate degree.

Remediation of deficiencies must be completed (a) within the first two long semesters and (b) before a student will be allowed to register for the courses which are counted towards their degree. The only exception is the semester in which the student will complete the deficiencies. In this situation, a student can enroll in courses required to remedy deficiencies concurrent with enrollment in graduate courses that will be applied towards the degree.
