International students | Middlesex University London

middlesex university apply

The Middlesex selection process is holistic, and we seek evidence of a student’s character, curiosity, academic achievement, and interests within the context of their environment and life experiences when making our decisions.

Step I: Inquire

Complete the Inquiry Form

Complete our inquiry form. Once you fill out the inquiry form, domestic applicants will receive our viewbook; international applicants view it online.

If you have a particular interest in athletics or the arts, please fill out an athletics interest form and/or an arts interest form. Your information will be sent to the relevant Middlesex coach(es) or teacher(s).

Step II: Interview

Schedule an Interview

An interview is not required. We are currently fully booked through the January 31, 2022 application deadline.

International students for whom English is not their primary language are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS, and those who wish to be interviewed must schedule an interview through Vericant.  This policy does not apply to students who have attended an international school where English is the primary language of instruction for two or more years or a junior boarding school in the United States.

Step III: Standardized Testing

Middlesex will be test optional in 2021-22 for the 2022-23 school year, and we commit that students who do not submit test scores will not be disadvantaged in our process. In 2020-21, 53% of applicants did not submit testing, and 50% of our admitted students were admitted without testing. Students able to access a standardized test may choose to submit their scores from the following tests: SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, and ACT.  We also encourage international students to submit the TOEFL or IELTS.

Register for a Test

Test scores must be sent to Middlesex directly from the testing service.

The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) or Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is optional for applicants to grades 9 and 10. Applicants for grade 11 may submit current year SSAT, PSAT or SAT scores.  Middlesex “super scores” the SSAT, considering the highest section scores across all test results.

  • Middlesex accepts the SSAT and the ISEE
  • The Middlesex SSAT code is 5068; for more information about the SSAT, contact S.S.A.T.B. at 609-683-4440, www.ssat.org
  • The Middlesex ISEE code is 220-650; for more information about ISEE, contact 800-446-0320, www.erbtest.org

In addition to SSAT or ISEE, the TOEFL or IELTS is required for all international applicants whose primary language is not English, unless you have studied in an international school in which English is the language of instruction for more than two years.  Middlesex accepts the IELTS Indicator, TOEFL IBT, and TOEFL ITP Plus Vericant.

The Middlesex TOEFL code is 8720.  Middlesex only accepts scores submitted electronically by the test center.  Please contact the test center directly for your official scores to be submitted.  In general, successful applicants to Middlesex have a high proficiency in English, which is typically demonstrated by a TOEFL score of 105 or higher or 7.5 on the IELTS.

Character Skills Snapshot

All applicants to Middlesex are encouraged to take The Character Skills Snapshot, a 30-minute online evaluation of character skills not currently measured by cognitive standardized tests.  The Character Skills Snapshot is designed to measure essential character skills that we seek to nurture in our students, such as resilience, intellectual curiosity, and open-mindedness. Students planning to take the ISEE must contact Middlesex at [email protected] to gain access to The Snapshot.

To take the Character Skills Snapshot:

  1. Create an account on ssat.org.
  2. Register for the SSAT or purchase The Character Skills Snapshot. When a family is registering for an SSAT, they can add The Snapshot as an add-on for $25, or they can purchase The Snapshot separately for $50.
  3. Once a student is either registered for the SSAT or a parent has purchased The Snapshot on their behalf, parents must consent to allow their children to access the assessment.
  4. To take The Snapshot, the student logs into their account, agrees to the Integrity Statement, then proceeds.

Step IV: Apply

Complete an Application

All applicants apply online, using either the Middlesex application through Gateway to Prep Schools (Gateway) or the Standard Application Online (SAO).  We do not have a preference between the two applications, but we require that applicants submit materials through only one application platform.

The applications require a Candidate Profile or Student Biographical Form, Student Essay Questions, Parent Statement, recommendations from current English and Math teachers (if possible), a Principal/Counselor Recommendation, and a transcript report, including current grades and grades from the previous two years.

If you are not currently taking Math and/or English, you may substitute recommendations from teachers of your other current academic classes (excluding art and physical education) and supplement your application with letters of recommendation from one of last year’s teachers of Mathematics and/or English.

Through Gateway, you may submit an optional Special Interest Recommendation or a Personal Recommendation.  If you are applying through the SAO and wish to submit a Personal Recommendation, please have the recommendation writer submit a letter directly to [email protected] Transcripts and other materials not submitted through Gateway or SAO may be emailed in the format of a PDF to [email protected]

We do not accept original artwork, scrapbooks, DVDs, or CDs. Instead, please provide additional (voluntary) Athletics or Arts multimedia supplements through the Multimedia section of the Candidate Profile or the Multimedia link of the Student Biographical Form in the SAO.  You may share Arts links using this online form. Do not delay submitting your application because you are waiting for a website or file to be prepared. In the Multimedia section, note that a link or file will be provided later.

The non-refundable application fee is $60 for domestic applicants and $120 for international applicants, payable by check or credit card using the Gateway application.

The application deadline for all applicants is January 31, 2022.  While we prefer to receive your portion of the application by January 31, we recognize that grades, recommendations, and testing may follow, and we promise to issue March 10 decisions to all students who have completed their applications by February 10. If you have questions regarding the timing of your application, please call the Admissions Office at 978-371-6524.

The Financial Aid application deadline is also January 31.  We encourage all families to apply for financial aid, if they believe they will need any level of financial support during their child’s tenure at Middlesex.  If a family does not apply for aid or qualify for aid upon admission, it is unlikely that the family will receive an aid award in subsequent years, unless there is a significant change in that family’s financial circumstances. Visit our Affording Middlesex page for more information.
