INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

Interested international applicants may apply to McMaster’s Medical Program through the regular admissions process, via the Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS). International (Visa) students should be aware that admission to the Undergraduate MD Program does not confer eligibility to apply subsequently through the Canadian Residency Matching Services (CaRMS) for a residency training position in Canada. Applicants should check the CaRMS website for further information.

Please see links below for information on Credentialing non-Canadian grades and requirements for proficiency in English.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

There are four absolute requirements for eligibility to apply to the program:

  • By May of the year of entry, applicants must have completed a minimum of three years of undergraduate university degree level work (30 half year credits or 15 full year credits or a combination). There is no requirement that applicants carry a full course load. Those applying in the third year of their undergraduate education (prior to completion of 30 half-year credits) are given offers conditional upon completion of the minimum number of credits and are required to submit their final undergraduate transcript with course codes and grades to McMaster by June 30th of the year of entry, as evidence that this requirement has been met;
  • By October 1st of the year of entry, applicants must have achieved an overall OMSAS converted average of 3.00 on the 4.00 point scale. Those applying in the third year of their undergraduate education are given offers conditional upon maintaining an average in their third year of at least 3.00 and are required to submit their final undergraduate transcript with course codes and grades to McMaster by June 30th of the year of entry as evidence that this requirement has been met;
  • All applicants to the MD Program are required to write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) prior to, and within five years of the year of application and applicants must release their scores to OMSAS by the Nov 6th deadline. Any test written in 2016 or later is valid for the application cycle ending October 1, 2021.

    For further information on the MCAT, click here
  • All applicants to the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University will be required to complete a 90 minute computer-based test, called CASPer, as part of the selection process.

    CASPer, the Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal characteristics, is a web-based assessment of interpersonal skills and decision-making, to be completed at a computer.  Successful completion of CASPer is required to maintain applicant eligibility.

    CASPer assesses for non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that we believe are important for successful students and graduates of our program, and will complement the other tools we use for applicant screening.  In implementing CASPer, we are trying to further enhance fairness and objectivity in our selection process.

    Applicants must sign up for the CASPer test at www.takecasper.com

FINANCIAL AID

Federal and provincial governments offer financial aid to students in the form of loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships, fellowships and repayment assistance programs.  The McMaster Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (SFAS) administer these programs on behalf of the various levels of government.

In Ontario, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) and Canada Student Loans (CSL) offer an integrated Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).  OSAP provides eligible Ontario students with financial aid to help pay for education-related costs such as tuition, books, compulsory fees, transportation and associated living costs. OSAP is intended to supplement a student’s (and family’s) financial resources and contributions towards their education.

In addition, Student Financial Aid and Scholarships and the MD Program provide bursary assistance to students.  A bursary is a non-repayable grant for students who demonstrate financial need.  It is necessary for students to apply for and receive government loan funding (i.e. OSAP) in order to be considered for bursary assistance.
