McGill University’s Neuroscience PhD and Masters Programs offer two of the most advanced neuroscience doctoral degrees in Canada. Our neuroscience PhD program remains one of the best-funded programs at the university, with funding available to both MCGill and non-MCGill students. For example, Dr. Wu is using her research funding to help develop new drugs to treat brain disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease . 

So you want to know how to get into a Neuroscience PhD program at McGill? Great! You’ve come to the right place. First, let’s talk about what a Neuroscience PhD is. The field of neuroscience is really broad and has lots of labs in different aspects of this field. This makes it difficult for me to give you an exact list of courses. Instead what I’ve done is list the different lab positions that are available and some general skills that they look for in each position. These positions include technician, graduate student, and faculty positions.

In order to successfully graduate from the program, an IPN Ph.D. student is required to write a Doctoral thesis and complete the required coursework in a maximum of 7 years.

The Ph.D. student must pass 4 in-class courses, each worth 3 credits. There is no minimum number of thesis credits that the IPN Ph.D. student must complete.

Doctoral Thesis

Our Ph.D. program requires its students to undertake an original laboratory research project, from start to finish, in a specific field of neuroscience that is of interest to them. The research must be of distinct contribution to knowledge, and must meet current standards of the discipline. The project must be carried out under the supervision and training of a faculty researcher affiliated with the program. The students must write a Doctoral thesis demonstrating original scholarship, in satisfactory literary form. Ph.D students are also expected to defend their research approach and conclusions in a scholarly manner.

Required Courses

IPN Ph.D. students must successfully complete 4 in-class courses in order to graduate from the program. 


Following graduation, our Ph.D. students may choose to pursue postdoctoral research in their specialized field of interest in prestigious institutions and centres around the world. Several of our graduates are accepted into professional schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and law. Furthermore, many of our Doctoral graduates enter the workforce right after graduation, whether it be academia or industry. Examples of possible career positions for our Ph.D. graduates include, but are not limited to, professors, lab directors, medical science liaisons, research scientists, senior medical writers and editors, consultants, policy advisors, and roles within management, marketing and entrepreneurship.

Rotation (Ph.D.)


The IPN Ph.D. Rotation Program admits a select group of candidates, to fill a maximum of seven open positions, each year for the Fall semester. 

The Rotation program makes it possible for these outstanding students to begin their neuroscience doctoral work at McGill University by sampling several labs and supervisors. Through a series of rotations in 3 different labs, with each rotation lasting 3 months, these students get to experience diverse research fields and lab environments in order to identify the best scientific niche for themselves.

Organization of Rotations

Upon arrival, Ph.D. Rotation students, along with the entire cohort of IPN Ph.D. students, will follow the standard IPN course sequence. However, in addition, Rotation students are expected to attend and participate in regular meetings with the other Rotation participants. Furthermore, each Rotation student will be assigned a Rotation Student Mentor who will help guide them through the process.

In their first year, Rotation students are expected to conduct 3 lab stints of about three months each. The fourth, and final, period of the Rotation year will be spent in the lab of the supervisor chosen for the duration of the Ph.D. In exceptional circumstances, the student may conduct a final rotation in another lab in their fourth period.

IPN M.Sc. students have the option to take either NEUR 630 or NEUR 631, or both.

Ph.D. students must take both.

Note that NEUR 630 and NEUR 631 are intended as accelerated survey courses in cellular & molecular neuroscience and systems neuroscience respectively. If you feel your background in neurobiology is weak, these courses are intended for you, to expose you to the critical foundations in neuroscience. If you already have a strong neuroscience background (e.g., undergraduate or MSc degree in Neuroscience) you may find these courses add very little to your training. In this case we strongly urge you to apply for an exemption from NEUR 630 and/or NEUR 631 so that you can take more specialized graduate seminar courses instead. Although they are listed as required core courses, we enthusiastically encourage you to seek the exemption if you are eligible

Note that our core courses are not open to non-McGill students. 

NEUR 705 – Mandatory Course

Effective as of September 2010, all IPN students must complete the NEUR 705 course in order to graduate from the program.

NEUR 705 is a research course worth zero credits. The objectives of NEUR 705 are to teach and familiarize students on the responsible conduct of research, so that they are able to identify and assess ethical issues that may arise in research, and handle research integrity conflicts that may arise in their own work/studies.

Convergence I & II: Arts + Neuroscience + Society

Overview: This interdisciplinary course invites students to creatively explore the intersection of arts, neuroscience, and society, and how these domains shape the understandings of ourselves and others. IPN Ph.D. students and RI-MUHC BRaIN students, in collaboration with Concordia University’s Fine Arts students, create self-directed, collaborative projects which converge artistic and scientific research. The course combines lectures, debates, site visits, and independent study to encourage all participants to understand and discover territories outside their artistic or scientific comfort zones. The course encourages both intimate and large group discussions, as well as expressing arts and science knowledge through production, representations, and artistic as well as communicative outcomes.

– Must be a Ph.D. student. If you are a Master’s student, obtain a letter of recommendation and special permission from your P.I. and the Graduate Program Director;

Undergraduate Courses

If your supervisor requests that you enrol in an undergraduate course because it may be beneficial to your graduate research, you must do the following:

  1. E-mail the IPN office ([email protected]) with proof that your supervisor has given you approval to enrol in an undergraduate course;
  2. Complete the ‘Request for Registration/Course Changes’ form.
    • Important: On page 3 of the form, when asked what the ‘reason for requesting the UG course’ is, you must select ‘extra course’ if you do not want this course to affect your graduate cGPA. Otherwise, selecting the option ‘additional coursework only’ will cause your grade in this course to affect your graduate cGPA.

Note that if you are enrolling in this course at another Quebec university (via the Quebec Inter-University Transfer method), then this may be the only course you can enrol in via this method for the rest of your degree.

M.Sc. students must complete a minimum of 45 credits in order to graduate from the program. 9 of the total credits relate to coursework and 36 are research credits.


It is recommended that you take at least 1 course per semester.

You are strongly encouraged to complete all of your courses before your M.Sc. thesis seminar, because as of that point, you will be in ‘Thesis Evaluation.’

You may choose to complete your 9 credits of coursework via one of the following ways:
