The business curriculum has a dual emphasis: a broad-based education in the foundation disciplines of the liberal arts and the sciences; and a focused development of business knowledge and behavioral skills. Lower level business majors learn and practice broad skills in core curriculum areas: American history; communication; creative arts; mathematics; political science; language, philosophy and culture; life and physical sciences; and social and behavioral sciences. They simultaneously take introductory business courses..
Upon successful completion of this broad-based foundation coursework, the student will begin to focus on a major field of study and a full range of business courses. The major field is chosen from accounting, finance, management, management information systems, marketing, and supply chain management. Students admitted to Mays Business Honors pursue an interdepartmental degree in business honors.
This combination of a broad educational foundation and more specialized study produces graduates uniquely prepared for entry-level, career launching organizational positions.
Requirements for Graduation
Requirements for graduation are listed in the Texas A&M University Student Rules and this catalog.
Courses taken to satisfy degree requirements must be taken for letter grades, with the exception of general elective requirements.
Students in Bachelor of Business Administration degree programs must complete with a 2.0 GPA or greater all courses included in the Core Business Knowledge.
Students must complete the Writing requirement. The requirement may be met by taking two writing (W) courses or one W course and one oral communication (C) course. See an academic advisor for additional information.
Students must complete the International and Cultural Diversity (ICD) and Cultural Discourse (CD) requirement.
- For the ICD requirement students must take one course (3 credit hours) from a list of approved courses. Students in BBA degree programs satisfy the ICD requirements by taking 3 hours of coursework from an approved list of BBA international elective courses that also simultaneously fulfill the university’s ICD requirement. - For the CD requirement students must take one course (3 credit hours) from a list of approved courses. If a course approved as CD also satisfies a Core Curriculum requirement, it can be use to satisfy both requirements. See an academic advisor for additional information.
Transfer of Credits
Acceptance of transfer of credit for business courses will generally be limited to those courses taught in the freshman and sophomore years at this institution. Transfer credit is not offered for upper-level (junior- and senior-level) business courses.
Bachelor’s Degrees and Departments of Instruction
There are five departments of instruction in Mays Business School: Accounting, Finance, Information and Operations Management, Management, and Marketing.
The Bachelor of Business Administration degree is offered in each of the following seven majors: Accounting, Business Honors, Finance, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management.
A Bachelor of Science degree in University Studies with concentration in business (USBU) is offered.
Bachelor of Business Administration
The degree of Bachelor of Business Administration is offered in these seven majors: accounting, business honors, finance, management, management information systems, marketing, and supply chain management. Each requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours of study. The student elects one of these as a “major,” but is also required to study fundamental theory and procedure in each of the basic business functions. In addition, the student takes courses essential to a general liberal education.

Upper-Level Entry into Accounting, Business Honors, Finance, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing and Supply Chain Management (BBA)
Students who meet the University and college entrance requirements enter Mays Business School as lower-level business (BUAD) students. Enrollment of Mays Business School students in junior- and senior-level business courses is limited to those who have been admitted to upper-level (also referred to as upper division) in one of the seven BBA majors: accounting, business honors, finance, management, management information systems, marketing, and supply chain management.
Upper-Level Entry Requirements and Application Procedures
Lower-level business (BUAD) students are encouraged to complete the freshman and sophomore sequence of courses as listed under Program Requirements.
The BBA upper-level (UL) entry requirements and application procedures are as follows:
- Admission: To be admitted to an UL BBA major, a student must be admitted to Mays Business School and have:

- BUAD students may preregister for upper-level business courses in the semester for which they have applied for upper level. However, students who fail to complete upper-level requirements shall not be permitted to remain registered in upper-level business classes.
- Transfer Students: Transfer students admitted to Mays Business School will be classified as lower-level business (BUAD) majors until they complete all requirements listed previously in item 1, at which time they may apply for admission to an UL BBA major. Transfer students may immediately apply for UL when admitted to Mays Business School if, and only if, they meet all UL requirements at that time.
- On-Campus Change of Major Students: Texas A&M students who change major into Mays Business School from another college or department at the University enter the business school as lower-level Business (BUAD) students until they complete all requirements listed previously in item 1. Change of major students who, when admitted to the business school, qualify to apply for admission to an UL BBA major may do so.
- Junior- and Senior-Level Business Courses: Preference for available seats in junior- and senior-level business courses will be given to students who have been admitted to a BBA degree granting major in Mays Business School. All ineligible students who preregister for UL business classes are subject to cancellation of their registration in these courses.
Cooperative education is designed to augment the academic program of study with on-the-job training. Academic requirements a business undergraduate must have to be eligible to participate are 45 completed credit hours and a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Restrictions on Two Degrees
Mays Business School is enrollment managed; demand for admission to the undergraduate business program consistently exceeds available educational resources. Priority is given to qualified applicants for their initial bachelor’s degree.
Only Business Honors majors may elect a second major field of study within the BBA degree. The first major must be business honors. The Business Honors student must satisfy all University and Business School requirements and complete all curriculum requirements for each major. This option leads to the granting of one BBA degree with two majors. Additional restrictions may apply.
Approval of double degrees (BBA with BA or BS) is granted by exception only. A written appeal for a double degree may be submitted; the appeal should reflect an excellent academic record, support from the BA or BS granting college, and a compelling justification.
Postbaccalaureate admission to Mays is severely restricted and granted by exception only. Applicants for a postbaccalaureate business degree may present a case for an exception to this enrollment restriction in the essay of a complete Texas A&M admission application. Generally, eligible applicants are denied postbaccalaureate admission but may be encouraged to apply, instead, to an appropriate graduate degree program.
Mays offers certificate programs for undergraduate students who want to explore a particular topic area in more depth. Most are open to all BBA majors, and some are designed for specific majors who wish to specialize in a particular area in the major field of study.
Students who pursue any of the certificate programs must complete all requirements for the specific program prior to graduation. Certificates are noted on the transcript after graduation. UNDERGRADUATE ENROLLMENT PLAN 2020-2021
1. INCOMING FRESHMEN – 1,100 ADMITTED
Mays does not directly select new freshmen. All students must apply through the university’s Office of Admissions process. Select business (BUAD) as your first-choice major. Once you have been admitted to the university, you will be considered by University Admissions for entry into Mays on a first-come, first-served basis. The demand for Mays is much greater than the number actually admitted, so it is important to complete the application process early. If there is no space available in Mays when you are admitted to the university, you will be placed in your second-choice major. Please direct all inquiries to the Office of Admissions, not Mays.
2. TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM OTHER UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES – 100 ADMITTED
A limited number of transfers from other universities are admitted to Mays through the university’s Office of Admissions process.
- Transfer applicants will be admitted on a competitive basis through a comprehensive application review process for summer or fall admission only.
- Students are encouraged to plan early and consult with an admissions counselor. This admission process requires strict and comprehensive adherence by the applicant to Mays Business School’s Required Coursework. Students need to have credit for both required math courses before submitting an application.
- Successful applicants must have completed required coursework at the time of application and have consistently excellent grades. Spring grades are not considered for summer or fall transfer admission decisions. Second-choice majors are not accepted.
- Transfer applicants who accept transfer admission to a non-business major at Texas A&M will not be eligible to later apply for on-campus change-of-major to Mays.
3. ON-CAMPUS CHANGE OF MAJOR (ALSO CALLED CHANGE OF CURRICULUM) – APPROXIMATELY 100 ADMITTED
Currently enrolled students at Texas A&M may change their major to Mays on a limited basis. The requirements are specific and the number admitted is small.
Students may request change of major to Mays Business School by meeting the following requirements:
- admitted to Texas A&M through the Freshman admission process, and
- cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater in a minimum of 30 graded hours at Texas A&M, and
- total college credit hours do not exceed 60 (including transfer credit), and
- completion of qualifying course requirements with a GPA of 3.5 or greater (shown below).
Transfer applicants who accepted admission to a non-business major at Texas A&M will be considered for on-campus change-of-major to Mays by waiver only. (Note that prospective transfer applicants were instructed not to accept admission to a non-business major with the expectation of later requesting change of major to Mays.)
Qualifying course requirements:
A minimum of four of the following courses completed with a GPA of 3.5 or greater, and two of the four courses must be MATH 140 and MATH 142, or their equivalents.
If more than the four courses minimum are complete, grades in all courses complete will be included in the GPA calculation. If a course has been attempted more than once, the higher grade will be used in this calculation.

When to Apply:
A student planning for change of major to business must submit their request online via the Change of Major Requests channel on My Record tab (Howdy portal) by the 20th class day of the SEMESTER BEFORE their desired change of major term. Students who change major into business enter as lower-level Business (BUAD) majors. For all Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) majors, select lower level business which appears on the Change of Major Website as “Business Administration (BAC).”
At the time of request a student must either meet all minimum requirements for business change of major or their official Texas A&M academic record must show that they are enrolled in coursework for the current semester (i.e. in-progress) to meet the remaining minimum requirements. For students in the latter category, a decision on their change of major request will be deferred until after final grades have been reported for the in-progress coursework.
A student requesting change of major to business (BUAD) may receive a follow-up email from an academic advisor asking for more information. It is important for the student to closely monitor their TAMU email account, and when replying to correspondence always include their UIN.
CHANGE OF MAJOR EFFECTIVE: CHANGE OF MAJOR REQUEST PERIOD:

Requests for change of major to business will be reviewed following the close of each request period. Applicants will receive a decision about their request via TAMU email. If accepted, the email will include orientation material, instructions on how to meet with an advisor to complete the change of major process and, if needed, how to adjust their registration for the effective change of major term.
When an applicant is enrolled in coursework to meet minimum requirements (i.e. in-progress) a decision on the request will be deferred until after the reporting of final grades for the in-progress coursework. Students will be notified of their request status within 5 business days after the reporting of final grades.
When minimum requirements for change of major are not met, the request will be reviewed according to the “Waiver for Exception to Minimum Requirements” process, outlined below.
Waiver for Exception to the Minimum Requirements:
Formerly known as “Appeal for Exception to the Minimum Requirements,” a student who does NOT meet the minimum change of major requirements (outlined above) may submit a request for waiver exception to change major. In the request, under the change of major requirements section, is a box for the student to write an essay stating reasons for wanting to change major.
Next, the student must check the “I don’t meet requirements” box, and then complete an explanation of why they are requesting the waiver. Included should be the reason(s) they believe Mays should grant a waiver, including past accomplishments, how the desired major would help with post-graduation goals, explanation of any extenuating circumstance believed to warrant consideration, and any other relevant information.
Applicants may receive a follow-up email from an academic advisor asking for more information. It is important that students monitor their TAMU email account closely, and when replying to a request for more information to always include their UIN.

All waiver requests will be reviewed following the posting of final grades for the in-progress coursework at the time of request. Students will be notified of the waiver request decision before the first class day of the following semester.
Given the oversubscribed status of Mays Business School’s undergraduate program, approved requests for change of major are generally limited to students who meet all minimum requirements. Students should work with Transition Academic Programs well in advance of a waiver decision to form appropriate back-up plans to act on should their request for waiver be denied.
Strict policies govern readmission of former Texas A&M students to this degree program.
- A former Texas A&M University undergraduate who is no longer enrolled at Texas A&M University and whose last major at Texas A&M was not business will qualify for readmission only by meeting the minimum requirements for on-campus change-of-major (see above).
- A former Texas A&M University undergraduate who left Texas A&M University in good standing for one or more long semester and whose last major at Texas A&M was business may apply for readmission to that same business major. The student must meet all Office of Admissions readmission requirements, including application deadlines and fee payment. If the applicant attempted any college-level coursework while away from Texas A&M University, transfer transcripts must be posted to the readmission applicant’s official Texas A&M University transcript and must reflect a minimum transfer GPA of 2.00.
