Course details

Integrated Pre-Masters (if undertaken)

Term one

You’ll be introduced to the University and the technical workshops and facilities available to you. The first term includes a range of lectures and seminars and you’ll start to explore your creative practice.

Theory and Analysis
You’ll challenge and confirm your practice through critical reading, observation and handling. You’ll think deeply about products and craft artefacts and investigate contexts associated with your own work.

Exploratory Practice
You’ll explore creative product design practice based around a theme of transportation and journey – physical and emotional – and this will help inform the development of your own project proposal for stages two and three of your course. There will be a structured framework to allow you to investigate the potential of methods, ideas and themes in your discipline.

Term two

During term two you begin developing your MA project, evaluating and testing out the aims of your proposal over a sustained period of self-directed study.

Reflective Practice
Using the knowledge you’ve gained through the first term, you’ll reflect upon your own practice and consider the practice of others to develop your own sense of critical awareness and creative independence. You’ll build on the research questions you explored in Exploratory Practice, and establish a clear line of enquiry through selected materials, concepts and a clearly articulated context. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a period of professional practice during this unit.Term three

In the third term of the course, you’ll apply the knowledge gained through your research to create a final body of work.

Major Project
The final phase of your MA study requires the production of a portfolio, including finished interaction models and high-quality product prototypes – the realisation of the concepts and explorations you will have made already through the course. In addition to considering the aesthetics and form of design studies, the final product design should represent the quality and purpose of your design process, combining academic and practical skills.Fees and additional costs

Master’s in Product Design and Development in Germany

Product design is an industry that is concerned with the design, manufacturing and use of products all around us. Each and every product we come across in our daily life will have had input from a product designer at some point in its development. Product designers are involved with the creation of new products, as well as the improvement of existing products to meet the requirements of consumers. It takes leadership and knowledge of product development in order to manage innovation. Education in product development can give students the knowledge and skills to recognize organizational barriers to innovation as well as the ability to oversee the design and marketing of a range of products.

Design degrees focus on fundamental aspects of design activity, from comprehension and methodology to values and philosophy. Design is often the first step before executing a certain product that has to follow certain aesthetic features and also respond to certain customers’ needs. Students enrolled in a Bachelor or Master in Design will learn to define the particularities of a certain object or concept, shape, size, colour, environment, costs, functionalities, utility, constraints, etc.

The use and attributes of design are becoming more and more diversified and are nowadays present in many different business sectors, from architecture and civil engineering, to organizational and human behaviour. A designer may work in different fields of activity such as: fashion design, interior design, graphic design, industrial design, web design and more. Students will be equipped with illustration skills as they have to be able to develop original ideas and concepts, as well as technical capabilities. They will also develop research and planning skills – in order to set a strategy for approaching each project, creativity and attention to detail.

Although most graduates of design work in media, advertising or software technology, other popular career options include: exhibition designer, interior designer, landscape architect, multimedia specialist, fashion designer and more.

Focuses during the Studies

Product design is all about designing industrial gear for mass consumption. These include, for example, household appliances, furniture, machinery, electronic devices and even vehicles. Factors that are important in Product Design are functionality, appearance, profitability, innovation and last but not least, essential environmental aspects.

During your studies you will specialize in successfully creating, implementing and commercializing innovations. Additionally, as it is an interdisciplinary degree, you should expect the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Business Management and Design to be involved.

With the constantly growing requirements of consumers there is also a special emphasis on Communication, Cultural Studies, Psychology and Media Studies. People’s needs are analyzed and later represented in the design of a product. From concept to realization, you will be able to actively participate in the life-shaping of society.

A Masters degree in Product Design requires certain qualifications. Bachelor graduates in Product Design, General Design, Mechanical Engineering, Business Engineering or other subject-related studies are all eligible for a Master in the field of Product Design.

The regular study period is between three and four semesters. Depending on the university and specialization you can receive a “Master of Arts” or “Master of Science” degree.

Study in Germany

Boasting many universities within the World Rankings, Germany’s universities offer an unrivalled teaching expertise along with a reputation for superb research output. Renowned for their forward thinking and modern learning facilities, Germany’s higher education system makes it a great choice for anybody thinking of studying in Europe.

Higher Education in Germany

Several of the top universities in the world are found in Germany, such as Heidelberg University (Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat Heidelberg, founded in 1386); Freiburg University (founded in 1457); Munich Technical University (Technische Universitat München); and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. The majority of Germany’s universities are public and currently charge tuition fees of approximately 60 euros or $80 U.S. dollars per semester.

Teaching is emphasized in German universities over research, with research being the focus of independent institutes known for their traditional approach to the social sciences. For students who wish to pursue a degree in psychology, anthropology, philosophy or sociology, acceptance into one of these research universities is extremely competitive and geared towards students who have showed exceptional talent and brilliance towards a particular field.

Another type of university popular with international students is the Fachhochschule (FH), University of Applied Science. Courses offered at a Fachhochschule are designed to prepare students for employment in particular professions that are not academic-oriented, such as information technology, nursing and business.German states and its federal government also maintain several FHs that train students who want careers in the civil service.Students cannot earn doctorates at a Fachhochschule.

Colleges of art, film and music provide creative programs for students who desire careers in the fine arts, fashion design, graphic arts and music. For centuries, Germany has made a tremendous contribution to the world of fine arts, literature and music by producing such brilliant writers, artists and composers as Mozart, Brahms, Hesse, Max Ernst and Nietzsche and continues to be a powerful force in the world of the fine arts, filmmaking and fashion.

Attending a German University

All students wanting to attend a university in Germany will need to provide a copy of their Abitur, a document also used in Estonia and Finland to designate the successful completion of final exams given in their final year of secondary education. While German citizens who do not have an Abitur can take another test called the Begabtenprüfung (literally aptitude test) in order to attend a university, international students, in most cases, will need to show ACT or SAT scores of at least 28 and 1300, respectively, to qualify for admission. High school diplomas similar to those earned in the U.S. are not considered the equivalent of an Abitur and generally will not promote a student’s chance of admission to a German college or university.

Some universities and colleges award scholarships to students to pay for books and living expenses. However a law called Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz ensures that economically disadvantaged students receive up to 650 euros ($860 U.S.dollars) each month for the four or five years it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree. Typically, half of this amount will need to be repaid to the government as an interest-free loan.

Generally, the language of instruction is German, so students wishing to attend a German university should have adequate knowledge of the German language.

German Visas for International Students

For short stays of up to three months (students taking summer courses, for example), a Schengen-Visa is required to remain in the country. Students should be aware that they must leave Germany at the end of the three months if they choose to obtain a Schengen-Visa and should plan accordingly before applying for this type of visa.

National visas are necessary if you plan to stay longer than three months. Students should make it clear why they require a National visa and state on the form whether they are completing a doctorate or enrolling in a full program. In addition, the following documents will be needed before students can apply for a visa: letter of admission, health insurance card, proof of pre-admission examination results and proof that you know how to speak and read German or that you plan to take German language courses as part of your curriculum.

Why Study in Germany?

Germany has been named by several international educational groups as one of the most supportive countries for students wishing to earn degrees in a country other than their own. Complementing this recognition is the fact that tuition charged by many German universities is minimal to none, further making studying in Germany an attractive and exciting prospect for students wishing to attend school in a country different from their own.
