Admission Requirement For The Masters in Environmental Management

Prerequisites for admission to the Master’s degree programme are:

1. Bachelor’s degree (BSc) with a grade of “good” (2.5) or higher, from the fields of natural sciences and economics, agricultural sciences and forestry, geography, engineering with particular relevance to the environment, or an equivalent degree in a related degree programme
2. Admission by the joint examination board of the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University, following a successful individual entrance test
3. Evidence of a sufficient command of English; accepted as proof of language proficiency are:

  • TOEFL PBT (paper-based test): 580 points
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test): 90 points
  • IELTS 6.5 points, band no less than 6.0
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English
  • equivalent certificate (i.e.level C1 according to the CEFR)
  • eight years of English classes at German schools in “Sekundarstufe I und II”
  • a stay of six months in a country where English is the native language

Curriculum
The first semester focuses on teaching the principal knowledge of natural sciences (biotic and abiotic structures, and dynamics of ecosystems including anthropogenic modifications and disturbances) and modelling methods.
The second semester is dedicated to practical fieldwork, cooperation and interaction with those working in the field. The focus is on the development of integrative, regional management strategies and systems analytical knowledge, including socio-economic components.
The aim of the third semester is the joint elaboration and presentation of integrative management approaches and solutions for natural resource management that are based on natural sciences and are socially sustainable.
The fourth semester is devoted to individual work on the Master’s thesis.
