B.D.S. – FINAL YEAR

BDS final year syllabus is the most important part of the BDS course. It contains all the information that a student requires to prepare for his or her final exam. The syllabus mainly comes in two parts:

  • First part includes all subjects that you have studied during your first three years (Bachelor of Dental Surgery).
  • Second part includes subjects that you will be studying during your final year (Bachelor of Dental Surgery).

1. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

You need to understand the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and diagnosis of the mouth and jaws. You also need to know their treatment.

This section will give you information regarding these topics. The first chapter deals with oral anatomy of the lower jaw and its functions while the second deals with maxillofacial anatomy and its functions. In the third chapter we will discuss about neuromuscular disorders of muscles like temporomandibular joint dysfunction disorder (TMJ), trigeminal neuralgia, myofascial pain syndrome etc., which can occur due to injury or trauma to certain nerves connected to these muscles.

The fourth chapter explains about infections in humans by viruses such as herpes simplex virus 1&2 (HSV-1&2) which causes cold sores on lips or blisters in genital area; varicella zoster virus 2&3(VZV) which causes chickenpox in children but later turns into shingles if left untreated; Epstein Barr virus 4(EBV) responsible for glandular fever/infectious mononucleosis (IM); cytomegalovirus 7(CMV); Human Immunodeficiency Virus 8(HIV); Herpes Simplex Virus 9(HSV 9). It also covers bacterial infections such as pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae 10 (S pneumoniae10), Staphylococcus 11 (Staphylococcus11), Haemophilus influenzae 12a13b14c15d16e17f18g19h20i21j22k23l24m25n26o27p28q29r30s31t32u33v34w35x36y37z38aa39ab40ac41ad42ae43af44ag45ah46ai47aj48ak49al

2. Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge

Prosthodontics is a branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions affecting the oral cavity (mouth). It includes both dental hygiene and public health dentistry. Prosthodontists are licensed to practice in oral surgery (dentistry), endodontics, periodontics (gum disease), prosthodontics and family dentistry.

Prosthodontic treatment may include crowns (caps), bridges or implants. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers all or part of your natural tooth structure to restore its function for chewing food or preventing decay. A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth attached to fake support structures called abutments which then hold false replacement teeth called pontics on top of them. Implants are screw-like devices made from titanium alloy that are surgically placed into the jawbone where they act as anchors for artificial replacement teeth or “dental prostheses”. They can also be used as anchors for orthodontic appliances like braces so no attachment is required on the side wafer which provides more flexibility when moving around during eating etcetera

3. Periodontics including Oral Implantology

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry and is the study and treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontics is a specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The word periodontics stems from Greek periodos (περίοδος), meaning “around” or “surrounding”; it is combined with otikos (Ὀτικός), which means “tooth”.

Periodontal disease refers to progressive inflammatory conditions that affect attachment tissues such as gingiva, cementum, alveolar bone, and ligaments around teeth in different ways depending upon how deep they are beneath your gum line. Gum disease can cause:

  • Bleeding gums – bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Receding gums – this means that your gums pull away from your teeth
  • Bad breath – caused by bacteria building up between your teeth and gum line

4. Oral Microbiology, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine Including Radiology

The oral microbiology and pathology course includes the study of the microbial flora, their growth and identification. The oral medicine course covers the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the mouth. This course also includes periodontology, dental trauma and other aspects related to clinical dentistry. In addition to these courses, students will also be taught about radiology which is an important part of clinical dentistry.

5. Orthodontics including Dentofacial Orthopaedics and Paedodontics& Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with the development, prevention and correction of malocclusion of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontists also treat children and adults who have problems with their bite or dentures. Some orthodontists specialize in treating only adults, while other orthodontists work almost exclusively with children. Orthodontic treatment typically includes braces or other appliances that move teeth into better positions so they function better.
