Gain superior knowledge and a firm skill base to pursue management careers in the arts and cultural sector. The Master of Arts and Cultural Management will develop your transferable skills so you can traverse a broad range of art form contexts, including film, theatre, dance, music and the visual arts.

With a vocational pathway in mind, the Master of Arts and Cultural Management program includes an optional internship placement. You’ll develop a practical understanding of cultural policy development in local councils and government.

Who is it for?

Whether you want to continue studying, or are coming back to study to advance your professional skills, you’ll refine your project management of small and large enterprises and broaden your understanding of issues concerning the arts, including financial management and contract negotiations. Designed for those who want to sharpen their leadership potential and abilities to function ethically, imaginatively and resourcefully in order to advance the arts and promote them nationally and internationally. Through the Master of Arts and Cultural Management, you will expand your professional networks and put your skills into practice with a national or international internship placement.

This is our most popular program for those who have completed undergraduate study. No experience is necessary.

  • 50 points of Foundation subjects (must be completed in the first 100 points of the program)

150 point program (1.5 years full-time or part-time equivalent)

This is for graduates who have completed at least one year of relevant professional work experience, or equivalent.

  • 5 Compulsory subjects (62.5 points)
  • Minimum of 62.5 points of Core subjects (maximum of 87.5 points)
  • Maximum of 25 points of Elective subjects

100 point program (1 year full-time or part-time equivalent)

This is for relevant honours graduates or those who have completed at least two years professional work experience in a closely related field, in addition to relevant background study.

Abe Watson says that the arts is in his blood. Born and bred in Bendigo – where he still lives – Abe was involved in theatre from a very young age, eventually becoming part of the management committee at his local theatre company and serving there for ten years.

He’s now Production Manager at the Melbourne Theatre Company – and he’s also a current Master of Arts and Cultural Management student.

Although Abe had many years’ experience in the arts industry, he wanted to learn about the specific skills required to manage arts and cultural organisations in Australia.

“The skillsets needed in arts organisations are unique,” he explains, “and I felt this program would be better tailored to what I wanted to do, rather than an MBA or generic management degree”.

For Abe, the degree has reinforced knowledge gained from working in the industry for a long time.

“But it’s also highlighted the specific challenges which management in arts and cultural organisation face. This is extremely important, because the challenges in this sector are so different to general management challenges,” he explains. “It has also helped me better speak the economic language, and be able to contribute more confidently in budget and financial discussions, as well as weigh in with potential solutions to problems.”

Abe also sees the diversity of his peers as a huge benefit to his studies, calling the University’s multicultural and diverse student cohort “one of its superpowers”.

“Because of this [diversity], tutorial discussions are engaging, because people bring their own perspective, formed by their own experience. It’s fascinating learning about how things are different (or similar) in all different corners of the globe. It’s a great environment for learning and it pushes you to be your best,” he says.

“I always knew I was passionate about theatre and the arts, but I think this degree has reinforced in me why I continue to do what I do. It has also inspired me to (in my own little way) try to educate people around the importance of arts and culture – not just in an economic and instrumental sense – but in an intrinsic sense too.”

MS in Arts Administration at Boston University

Boston University’s Master of Science (MS) in Arts Administration degree program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in visual arts, performing arts, and arts service organizations in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors both domestically and internationally.

The program’s faculty of international, working professionals emphasizes an interdisciplinary curriculum and encourages collaboration between students from both visual and performing arts backgrounds. Our students are able to consult and network with a range of national and international companies and nonprofit organizations that operate within the art world.

The Arts Administration program is specifically designed to accommodate the schedules of working adults. Students can complete all coursework on a part-time, evening basis, in approximately two years. Full-time study toward the degree is also possible, although scheduling issues may sometimes arise, as not every course will appear in a one-year cycle.

The program also emphasizes global perspective, requiring students to enroll in an International Travel Study Course, which enables them to engage with world-renowned cultural leaders, museums, arts organizations, and artists. Using the resources of Boston University and its partnerships with other institutions abroad, recent courses have been offered in cultural destinations such as Barcelona, Spain; Dublin, Ireland; Brussels, Belgium; London, England; and Havana, Cuba. The travel course is a requirement for all students.

Four-course graduate certificate programs in Arts Administration or Fundraising Management are also available.

A total of 40 credits is required. Courses are 4 credits each unless indicated otherwise.

International Travel Study Courses

The Arts Administration program is committed to exposing its students to the growing impact of globalization on the art world. As part of the curriculum, Arts Administration students are required to take an International Travel Study Course. Using the resources of Boston University and its partnerships with other institutions abroad, recent courses have been offered in Barcelona, Spain; Dublin, Ireland; Brussels, Belgium; London, England; and Havana, Cuba. Arts in Barcelona will be offered in spring. Comparative Cultural Policy and Administration (Dublin/London) is offered in the summer.

Internship

Students matriculating in the Arts Administration program are required to have some direct work experience in arts organizations prior to degree conferral. Students must have completed 24 credits prior to taking AR803 Internship II and undertaking the actual fieldwork. The program maintains a formal relationship with a core group of potential host organizations that have been selected for their willingness to work with interns, although it is possible to intern with other organizations as well. The student is expected to complete a total of 150 hours of work with the host agency, generally within a single semester.

Internship Waiver

Students with four or more years of professional arts organization work experience may waive the internship requirement with their advisor’s written consent. If the internship is waived, the student must enroll in a tenth classroom-based course. Also, with the permission of the advisor, MET AR 804 Advanced Management and Consulting for Arts Organizations may be substituted for the internship requirement if the student has had two years of full-time professional arts administration work experience.

Academic Standing

All students in the Arts Administration program must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 to remain in good standing and to graduate. No grade below B– in any course may be applied toward the degree. Students with a grade point average below 3.0 will be placed on academic probation and must achieve a cumulative 3.0 by the completion of the following semester or be subject to dismissal. Students who are placed on academic probation for two consecutive semesters are also subject to dismissal.
