Established in 1891, Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a public higher level institution focusing on sea and environmental engineering, management and business.

It offers four-year undergraduate courses in subjects including emergency management, energy systems engineering, facilities engineering, international maritime business, marine engineering, marine transportation and environmental protection. There are also graduate courses in emergency management and facilities management.

The university campus is situated on Cape Cod, by the beautiful Cape Cod Canal. All residential students are members of the Regiment of Cadets, which means they do regimental training, a physical fitness programme and military drill. Student clubs exist – among other things – for hockey, yoga, semper fi, amateur radio and golf. In terms of athletics, you can choose to become part of baseball, crew, cross-country, football, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, track and field, softball and volleyball teams competing in NCAA and ECAC Division III. About 40 per cent of cadets are engaged in competitive sports at MMA.

Notable alumni include Andrew E Gibson, former US secretary of commerce for maritime affairs; Christine Griffin, a lawyer and assistant secretary for disability policies and programs for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services; and merchant mariner and author Richard Phillips.
