Applying for courses
Choosing Sociology courses
- All courses can be found in LSF. Select “Faculty of Social Sciences”/”Sociology” for Sociology courses (see PDF on how to find Sociology courses in LSF).
- As a Sociology student coming to IfS you can apply to any courses of interest to you, provided you meet the language and study requirements (B2 in German for courses held in German, the same level, B2, applies for English courses). With a German level of B2 or higher, you should primarily take German courses, as the number of English taught courses is limited
- Generally, you should attend courses corresponding to your study level (BA if you are a BA student, MA if you are a MA student). You will find the study level of the course by selecting it in LSF and scrolling down to the point “Course catalogue”.
- Contact the coordinator of your home university and discuss the courses you may choose from the LMU course catalogue in order to receive course recognition and credit transfer upon your return.
- We advise you to select a good mix of courses from different course types, comprising lectures (Vorlesungen), seminars (Seminare) and tutorials (Übungen), which will allow you to spread your work fairly equally throughout the semester. In Sociology, lectures are however mostly solely being offered in German.
Type of courses at IfS
Course type | Characteristics |
---|---|
Lectures (Vorlesungen) | Introduction to a subfield or topicApprox. 400-600 participantsInput-oriented course form, discussions only exceptionallyAssessment mostly by written exam at the end of the course periodReglar attendance highly recommended but not mandatoryWritten exam at the end of the course periodOften accompanied by tutorials for thematic revision and exam preparation |

While lectures (Vorlesungen) are always held in German, you will be able to take a number of tutorials (Übungen) and seminars (Seminare) in English each semester, which will ensure you the opportunity to obtain up to 30 ECTS.
Applying for Sociology courses (winter semester 2021-2022)
- Due to the pandemic situation, courses offered during the winter semester will be mostly taught online, with only very little face-to-face teaching. The lectures will inform the students who are enrolled in their courses about the precise form of online teaching at the beginning of the lecture period. For the start of each course, please check on the course portal LSF: https://lsf.verwaltung.uni-muenchen.de.
- Applying for courses is mandatory (except for lectures/Vorlesungen which you may attend without former notification, here, you must list the lecture in question in your online study schedule however, in order for the course to be listed in your transcript). If you do not apply for any other course, you will not be able to participate.
- To apply for Sociology courses, please fill in the course application form with your prioritised list of course wishes, and send it to us per email by 13 September 2021 (erasmus@soziologie.uni-muenchen.de). We will confirm course places via e-mail on 04 October 2021 and will also register you online for the courses confirmed. Make sure you also add the courses confirmed to your study schedule.
- Unfortunately, some of course wishes may in fact be rejected in case the maximum capacities for a course have been exceeded. If we cannot offer you a course, we will try to offer you an alternative course to ensure you will meet your ECTS requirements. This applies to students studying Sociology as their major and primarily to those from our core partners (if you are usure if our departments have a bilateral agreement, please ask your home coordinator.
