Following his college career, Kingsbury was the 201st draft pick by the New England Patriots in the Round 6 of the 2003 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he did not play in his rookie season of 2003, spending the year on the Patriots’ injured reserve with an arm injury. However, in 2003, the Patriots won the Super Bowl (XXXVIII) and consequently, Kingsbury got a Super Bowl ring. Further, he was waived by the Patriots on September 6, 2004.
He then went on to play with the New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and Buffalo Bills. He also played with the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe in 2006. Lastly, in 2007, he played in the Canadian Football League.
In August 2008, Kingsbury joined the University of Houston football staff in the position of quality control. In 2010, Kingsbury became the Co-Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach of the University of Houston football team. He was recognized as the 2011 Offensive Coordinator of the year.

On December 12, 2012, Kingsbury returned to his alma mater as Texas Tech University’s 15th full-time head coach. He was the head coach for Texas Tech University from 2013 to 2018.
Kingsbury was hired by the University of Southern California as their new offensive coordinator in December 2018. After one month with the USC, on January 8, 2019, Kingsbury took the job as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
