Dr. Kathy “Kat” Schwaig, chief academic officer and provost, has been named interim president effective June 30, 2021, of Kennesaw State University by University System of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley. Schwaig takes over for President Pamela Whitten, who will become the next president of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, on July 1, 2021.

“Dr. Schwaig has great passion for Kennesaw State University and has built a reputation as an exceptional leader who understands how to foster success and keep KSU a student-centered university,” USG Chancellor Steve Wrigley said. “I appreciate her willingness to serve and know she will continue to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students and leadership to help KSU achieve its goals.”

As provost, Schwaig has been responsible for all aspects of the university’s academic mission including the intellectual environment for faculty, students and staff, and planning, budgeting, supervising and reviewing programs in instruction, research and continuing education. She supervised the deans of KSU’s 11 colleges and led the faculty in their efforts to strengthen academic programs and foster a culture of academic excellence. Schwaig previously served as the Dinos Eminent Scholar Chair of Entrepreneurial Management and professor of information systems, as well as the dean of KSU’s Michael J. Coles College of Business, a position she held from 2012 to 2019. Schwaig joined the faculty at KSU in 2002, giving her almost 20 years of teaching and professional experience as an Owl. During her tenure as business school dean, the college’s reputation rose including its part-time MBA being ranked among the top 25 in the nation and first in Georgia among public institutions by Bloomberg Businessweek (2018). CEO magazine (2018) ranked the Executive MBA program first in Georgia and seventh nationally. The Online MBA program was ranked in the Top 20 nationally and first in Georgia by U.S. News and World Report (2019)

In addition, Schwaig led the college through two successful reaccreditation reviews by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) and was instrumental in bringing in $13 million in philanthropic gifts.

Schwaig has held several faculty and leadership roles at KSU, including interim and associate dean, interim department chair for the Department of Accounting and interim department chair for the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems in the University’s College of Science and Mathematics. Prior to joining KSU, Schwaig held faculty positions at Georgia State University and Baylor University.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Kennesaw State as interim president,” Schwaig said. “Because of our great students and the dedication of KSU faculty and staff, we enjoy significant momentum and focus in the areas of enrollment growth, student success and research funding. Working collaboratively with all university stakeholders, my objective as interim president is to continue KSU’s extraordinary trajectory towards becoming one of the best R2 institutions in the nation.”

A native of central Texas, Schwaig earned a BBA in Accounting and an MBA in Information Systems from Baylor University, a Master’s of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University, and a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of South Carolina.

For the fifth consecutive year, the University of West Georgia has been recognized by Colleges of Distinction, an organization that awards institutions committed to excellence in higher education.

The president of Georgia’s third-largest public university is leaving the state for a new job.

Pamela Whitten will step down as president of Kennesaw State University to become president of Indiana University, effective July 1, KSU announced Friday.

Whitten has served as president of KSU since June 2018. KSU has an enrollment of more than 38,000 students as of spring 2021.

With the announcement of Whitten’s departure, Steve Wrigley, the chancellor of the University System of Georgia, and Board of Regents will discuss next steps, KSU said.

Whitten’s departure comes as Georgia’s largest public university, Georgia State, is also searching for a new president to replace Mark Becker, who has announced his plans to leave at the end of June.

Whitten will be Indiana University’s first female president. The school has an enrollment of about 33,000.

“Pamela was appointed by the Board of Trustees following an extensive search, with faculty, staff and students across the university providing early input regarding the characteristics and experiences most desired in IU’s next leader,” said Michael J. Mirro, chair of IU’s Board of Trustees, in a statement.

The school launched a search for a new president following former President Michael A. McRobbie’s retirement announcement in August 2020, after 14 years as president and 24 years in senior positions.

Accomplishments during Whitten’s presidency at KSU include addressing barriers to enrollment and graduation that led to two straight years of record growth with the number of undergraduate and graduate students increasing from 35,500 in fall 2018 to over 41,000 in fall 2020. This growth also included an increase in racial diversity, with self-identified minority students making up 48.7% of the student body in 2020, up from 43.1% in 2017, KSU said.

Whitten also was instrumental in securing pivotal gifts and financial support that will directly benefit students for years to come. In just the last 16 months, KSU was the beneficiary of three of the largest gifts in university history: $10 million for the KSU Journey Honors College, $8.7 million from Wellstar Health System to double the number of KSU nursing majors and $9 million to name the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

“The opportunity to serve as president of Kennesaw State University over the past three years has been one of the highlights of my career,” Whitten said in a statement Friday. “I am honored to have served alongside a dedicated group of faculty and staff who each day deliver on the promise of putting our students first. KSU is a tremendous institution providing world class instruction, and I am proud of the many accomplishments we have achieved during my tenure.”

Job Summary
Serves as the liaison between functional and technical teams by understanding and conceptualizing applications from each area’s point of view. Responsibilities will include collecting requirements, creating business process diagrams, managing change management process, testing, and assisting with the implementation of new software applications to support the objectives of the Institution.

Dr. Roxana Chicas is an Assistant Professor, Research Track. She specializes in clinical research in occupational and environmental health, particularly agricultural workers. Her research program focuses on reducing the severe kidney and brain damage that farm and construction workers can experience from being subject to extreme heat. Her nurse-scientist work will bring innovative cooling methods right to the fields. Dr. Chicas received her BSN and Ph.D. in Nursing from Emory and completed a postdoctoral traineeship in the Renal Department of Emory School of Medicine. In 2020, she received The Silver Bowl award from Emory University. The Silver Bowl was initiated to honor outstanding graduate students.

Dr. Chicas has been featured in numerous publications throughout her career. The latest being Wiley Online Library. The featured article is titled Nursing is never neutral: Political determinants of health and systemic marginalization.

Dr. Abebe Gobezayehu

Dr. Abebe Gobezayehu, MD is an Assistant Professor, Research Track, and expert in maternal-child health. He leads the Emory-Ethiopia projects which are implemented through the Emory University Ethiopia Country Office. Dr. Abebe previously served as country director of the Emory Ethiopia Office, and in his current faculty role, he supports the Emory Ethiopia research efforts and the School of Nursing alongside fellow NHWSN faculty member Dr. John Cranmer and colleagues across the university, and the Ph.D. program partnership with the Addis Ababa University.

Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson

Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson is an Assistant Professor, Tenure Track, specializing in caregiver well-being, gerontology and elder health, health disparities, mental health, and vulnerable populations. She graduated from The University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2007, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing in 2012 from Vanderbilt University, specializing as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Most recently, Dr. Bonds Johnson graduated with a Ph.D. from Oregon Health & Science University in 2019 where she focused on African American persons living with dementia and their caregivers. She has been a T32 postdoctoral trainee in the School of Nursing for the past two years. Dr. Johnson has received funding from SAMHSA at American Nurses Association Minority Fellowship Program and the Jonas Foundation as a Veterans Healthcare Scholar. Dr. Bonds Johnson hopes to improve health outcomes for African American persons living with dementia and their families through the development of culturally tailored clinical interventions. She was recently awarded the Hattie Bessent Research Award for her innovation in nursing research in mental health.

Lalita Kaligotla, MA, MBA

Lalita Kaligotla is a Professor of the Practice and Senior Director for Leadership and Engagement. She focuses on community-based research and the importance of connection to the community. Before bringing her talents to Emory, Kaligotla was a professor of practice and the Associate Director and Adjunct Professor in the Hart Leadership Program at Duke University, a 10-month immersive leadership development experience for new graduates of Duke University. Dr. Kaligotla significantly increased diversity in the program. She was also responsible for administering and managing the highly competitive fellowship program including advertising, selection, recruitment, and post-selection orientation and advising throughout the fellowship experience. Dr. Kaligotla was also involved in Teaching for Equity Fellowship (TFEF) Program from 2020-2021. TFEF is a yearlong fellowship and workshop series for Duke faculty to enable them to create equitable and inclusive learning spaces. Workshops in the program are specifically designed to address teaching and mentoring topics around race and identity.

Dr. Laurie Ray

Dr. Laurie Ray is an Assistant Professor, Clinical Track. Dr. Ray specializes in Women’s health with expertise in sexual and reproductive health and nearly ten years experience delivering improved health outcomes for individuals and populations. She most recently through evidence-based and patient-centered clinical care and research. She most recently worked as a nurse practitioner and colposcopy program director at Planned Parenthood Southeast. Dr. Ray completed her DNP from Emory School of Nursing in 2018 and also holds a Masters of Science as a Women Health Nurse Practitioner from Columbia University. Dr. Ray has studied contraceptive adherence and STI screening protocols to improve the quality of care.

Dr. Telisa Spikes

Dr. Telisa Spikes is an Assistant Professor, Tenure Track. She received her BSN in nursing from Georgia Baptist College of Nursing at Mercer University in 2003, MSN in advanced care management and health policy from Kennesaw State University in 2009, and Ph.D. from Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in 2019. For the past two years, Dr. Spikes has been engaged in postdoctoral training in cardiovascular health equity through the Emory Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Spikes’ overall research interests focus on the relationships among adverse social stressors, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease risk, specifically subclinical disease and hypertension, in young adult African American women, a group that has seen a dramatic increase in cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. Additionally, she is interested in the stress-buffering of the role of resilience effect on mitigating cardiovascular risk.

Dr. Missi Stec

Dr. Missi Stec was a visiting scholar at SON before joining the faculty as a Professor, Clinical Track in the spring of 2021. She earned her MSN in midwifery in 2005 from Vanderbilt as well as a DNP in 2010. In 2015, she was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Nurse-Midwives and as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2017 for her work on technology integration in nursing education. Dr. Stec has a long history in nursing education teaching at all levels in her 16-year career. She is the previous midwifery and DNP program director at the University of Cincinnati, where she spent the first 12 years of her career. She moved into administration as the Associate Dean of Evaluation and Educational Innovation at SUNY in Brooklyn.

Dr. Athena Sherman

Dr. Athena Sherman is an Assistant Professor, Tenure Track and was a Post-doctoral to Faculty Fellow Dr. Sherman is a certified nurse educator and expert in public and mental health. Sherman’s program of research focuses on improving our understanding of how complex systems of racism, cisgenderism and heterosexism influence health and health equity for racially/ethnically diverse LGBTQ+ communities, with a focused lens on the impacts of trauma/violence and substance use on mental health and social functioning among transgender and gender diverse people. Dr. Sherman’s work has been funded by the Southern Nurses Research Society, Danger Assessment Technical Training and Support Center, and the Association of Community Health Nurse Educators to mention a few.

Dr. Shannon Stevenson

Dr. Shannon Stevenson is an Assistant Professor, Clinical Track, and joined the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in the fall of 2021. Before joining Emory, Dr. Stevenson was an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Her clinical background includes labor and delivery, antepartum, and mother/baby nursing. She earned a Doctorate of Education in nursing education from Teachers College, Columbia University (2021) where she was a Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar from 2016-2018. Dr. Stevenson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Medicine, Health and Society (2011) and a Masters in Nursing in nurse-midwifery (2013) from Vanderbilt University. Her research interests include the transition to parenthood, the use of simulation in nursing education, and how to foster a culture of academic integrity in nursing programs.

Dr. Weihua Zhang

Dr. Weihua (Vivian) Zhang is an Assistant Professor, Research track. Dr. Zhang completed her Ph.D. in Nursing and Masters in Statistics at the University of Texas Austin and completed a postdoctoral traineeship in the Center for Data Science in the Emory University School of Nursing. Her BSN is from Central South University in Changsha, China. Dr. Zhang’s research program centers around improving outcomes for persons aging with arthritis and multimorbidities with a focus on concepts of self-regulation, symptoms, and self-management. An expert in data analytics, she is also interested in the application of innovative data science, Health Informatics, & Telehealth to clinical problems for multiple populations.

Kennesaw State University’s Annual Country Study Program returns in 2021-2022 with a yearlong celebration of Greece’s culture and history.

A staple of KSU’s Division of Global Affairs, the program spotlights a country or region with a variety of activities and events to enhance awareness, interest and understanding of the world. The Year of Greece schedule includes a grand opening celebration, scholarly presentations, panel discussions and a two-day symposium on Greek history and culture.

“Kennesaw State’s faculty demonstrate tremendous dedication to providing international education inside and outside of the classroom, and the Annual Country Study Program is an important component of that,” said Sheb True, interim associate vice provost for the Division of Global Affairs. “We want to continue to broaden the experiences and opportunities that prepare students to succeed in today’s increasingly global environment.”

Coinciding with the bicentennial of Greece’s independence, KSU’s Year of Greece will have its grand opening on Sept. 15 at The Commons dining hall on the Kennesaw Campus. Free Year of Greece T-shirts will be given out and The Commons will serve Greek dishes along with an accompanying description of the food and its historical connection to Greece.

About Dr. Josh Azriel, Ph.D.: Josh Azriel is the Associate Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Communication and Media at Kennesaw State University. As Associate Director, he schedules classes for both the online certificate in Digital and Social Media and the Master’s in Integrated Global Communication. He also teaches the Survey of Global Communication in the master’s degree and Digital Media Law in the online certificate.

Dr. Azriel earned his B.A. in Political Science at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His M.A. in Political Science is from the University of Florida and his PhD in Journalism and Communications is also from the University of Florida. He earned his PhD in Journalism and Communications because he was interested in studying media law, specifically how the First Amendment’s freedom of speech clause applies to the Internet. Dr. Azriel’s current research is on California paparazzi and whether the state laws that attempt to protect the public’s privacy from paparazzi are effective. He is writing a book on this subject that will be published in late 2020.

Interview Questions
[MastersinCommunications.com] Could you please provide an overview of Kennesaw State University’s Master of Arts in Integrated Global Communication (MAIGC) program, and how it is structured? What are the key learning outcomes students can expect from this program?

[Dr. Azriel] The Master’s program provides students with three components: learn, observe and do. Students spend the first two semesters (fall and spring) learning about global communication. They then spend the summer at an internship, conducting research, or on study abroad observing a specific aspect of global communication. In their last semester, they put together a professional project in the capstone course, the “do” component.

Our core classes include Survey of Global Communication, International Public Relations, and Communication and Technology. Each of these classes lay foundations for understanding the landscape of global communication and analyzing research in different communication areas. These classes offer more of the theoretical component, the learning phase of the program.

Student can attend classes full or part-time. Full time students can finish in 16 months and part-time students can finish in two to three years. The tailoring of their program occurs in the summer abroad internship, directed study, study tour, or study abroad choices as well as their final projects for the capstone.

We call the study abroad component SEAM: Summer Engagement Abroad Module. Students have four choices: internship with a media company, directed research project, study tour of media companies, or study abroad at a partner institution. I will discuss each of these in detail:

Internship: Students often pick this choice where they spend between two weeks and one month working at a media company. We have direct connections with BBC, Golin Public Relations, Irish Tourist Board, and Nobile Wines Consortium in Tuscany, Italy. At any of these companies, students may learn about mass media, public relations, event planning, social media, etc. Student may also find their own internship experience.

Directed Research Project: Students work with me directly on a research project where they collect data. I supervise their research over the summer and they turn in a summary of collected data.

Study Tour: Students visit a city overseas where they meet media professionals in those locations. For example, in the past we have conducted study tours in Dublin, London, Brussels, and Seoul, South Korea. In each of these cities, students were hosted by public relations, advertising, and news firms.

Study Abroad: Students enroll in courses at a partner institution. In Summer 2019, we are expanding that option to include Cattolica University in Milan, Italy where students will be able to take an English language course to learn about branding. In the past, our students, have studied in Beijing and Amsterdam.

[MastersinCommunications.com] For their final graduation requirement, students in the MAIGC program must complete an Integrated Global Communication Capstone, consisting of either a scholarly research project or a global communication project for a client. Could you elaborate on both capstone options, and what each entails?

[Dr. Azriel] The capstone course is taught by one professor. Most students choose the professional communication project. They often have a mentor from the faculty who guides them throughout the semester. Students are allowed to use any research from their SEAM for their capstone or they can conduct an original project. The students present their projects to both the professor and me in November.

In the capstone students have completed a variety of projects including the viability of an NFL team in London, local government hurricane preparedness in Texas, and a public relations plan for a musician in South Africa. Students create interesting projects that can be presented to both professional and academic audiences.

[MastersinCommunications.com] What role does faculty mentorship play in the MAIGC program? Independent of faculty instruction and support, what career development resources and academic services are available to students, and how can they make the most of these mentorship opportunities and support systems?

[Dr. Azriel] We have found that our course instructors often stay in communication with our students throughout their graduate course work and after they graduate. These faculty often provide mentoring. A few of our faculty are well known for hosting guest speakers in their courses where students can connect with them. Some students have even been hired by these people.

When a student has a research paper accepted into a conference, we try and provide some financial support for travel when we can. The university’s graduate student council can provide some support too. For the SEAM, each student receives a university scholarship of $1,000 to assist with travel.

[MastersinCommunications.com] For students interested in Kennesaw State University’s Master of Arts in Integrated Global Communication, what advice do you have for submitting a competitive application?

[Dr. Azriel] The most important part of any applicant’s personal statement is explaining their interest in learning about global communication and their career goals. The letter of recommendation should state more than that the applicant worked hard in class or as an employee. It should talk about the applicant’s likelihood of success in the program. We are looking for applicants who understand that a master’s degree is NOT another bachelor’s degree. They need to understand they will not memorize facts but instead will be asked to critique, debate, research, and write.

[MastersinCommunications.com] What makes Kennesaw State University’s Master of Arts in Integrated Global Communication program unique, and a particularly strong graduate degree option for students?

[Dr. Azriel] Students tell us that the number one reason they selected this program is the SEAM. Our global partnerships are unique for a master’s degree and it opens up professional doors for our students. The “learn, observe, do” perspective of our program is appealing.

We often hear from our alumni when they are hired. In the past couple of years, I was thrilled to hear former students were working at Allstate, Cox Communications, Microsoft Xbox, eBay Partner Network, and Cobb County government outside Atlanta, GA. One alumnae was featured in a TED Talk. A few have taught freshman and sophomore classes part-time at local colleges.

One of our program’s strengths is our faculty. They all have professional experience in public relations, journalism, or mass media. Each professor has international professional or academic experience in research and/or teaching. We are also often traveling abroad presenting research at conferences.

[MastersinCommunications.com] Students of master’s in communication programs often must balance work, internships, coursework, and rigorous research projects. What advice do you have for students in terms of successfully navigating their graduate school experience, and making the most of the opportunities presented to them?

[Dr. Azriel] Be organized! Manage your time effectively. We tell prospective students that they need to put aside 1-2 days or several evenings per week to focus on this program. What they put into the program is what they will get out. Our successful students listen to our advice and have dedicated time they put aside to study.

About Kennesaw State University
Kennesaw State University hosts two campus locations. Originally founded in 1963, the Board of Regents deemed Kennesaw a commuter school. Upon its first groundbreaking years, the university was home to just over 5,000 students who resided in eight residential communities located in both Kennesaw and Marietta. To this day, students who commute still have access to the same wealth of campus resources and activities. Resting on just over 500 acres of land, Kennesaw State University’s campus holds over 130 buildings that are used for academics, research, recreation, and of course, residential housing.

The university provides students with a rich campus experience with more than 250 organizations and clubs to select from and become a member of. Students can engage with fellow peers through Greek organizations, ambassador programs, and community service opportunities. For students who enjoy campus camaraderie, the athletic teams perform at the NCAA Division I level. KSU has 18 varsity sports teams that compete. From baseball to soccer, the Atlantic Sun Conference has it all. The football team at KSU is a member of the Big South Conference. Kennesaw State University Application Requirements
First-year, transfer, and freshman undergraduate students should have a satisfactory GPA, satisfactory test scores, official high school transcripts, applicable college course credit transcripts, and a $40 application fee. Online learning students should prepare the same documents and follow a similar application process when seeking admissions.

Graduate students should provide an immunization form, a completed graduate application, official transcripts from an accredited institution, a satisfactory GPA, applicable standardized test scores, and a $60 application fee. Many of the colleges and departments at Kennesaw State University require additional documents in order to be considered for admissions. Graduate students who are plan to participate in either on-campus learning or online courses should consult the corresponding homepage for further application instructions.

Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students who are residents of the state will pay $185.40 per credit hour and $853 in student fees. Students who are considered full-time will pay $3,784 in tuition. Undergraduates who are non-residents of the state will pay $654.33 per credit hour and $853 in fees. Full-time nonresident undergraduates will pay $10,818. Undergraduate students who wish to enroll in virtual courses will pay $206 per credit hour.

Graduate students who are residents of the state will pay $296 per credit hour along with $853 in student fees for a total of $1,149. Students who are full-time and taking up to 12 credit hours will pay a total of $4,548 including student fees. Graduates who are non-residents of the state will pay $1,066 per credit hour along with an $853 student fee. Overall, full-time graduate students taking up to 12 credit hours will pay $13,795. Graduate students taking online courses will pay $383 per credit hour.
