York St John University World Ranking 2020

1. It not so long ago ‘became’ a university. It is very good for courses related to teaching/education (which is what the college was originally teaching before it upgraded to university status). It’s slowly getting better and better, but it’s only just become a university, and nobody seems to be giving it a chance. It’ll get there….slowly  …one day.

2. Its entry requirements are quite low, letting in people with lower grades (they HAVE jumped to around 280 this year – BBC). This doesn’t necessarily mean that everybody there is ‘stupid’ because they couldn’t get into York University instead (I’ve known people with A’s/B’s to go to Leeds Trinity) but some people tend to look down on universities which accept people with lower grades (even myself).

I liked YSJ. My boyfriend goes to Leeds university which he loves  But when i ask him about his lectures he says he’s in a room with about 200 other students, and to be honest, that really put me off wanting to go to a bigger university. I liked how ‘personal’ York was and their course was just perfect for me as I’m not very good in exams (nerves get to me  ) and the course is near enough 100% coursework.

Plus, i get a work placement AND a term abroad  I like how it’s small as well and it’s very close to the city centre, so If I’m bored or want to go for a wander into town, it’s literally just a walk down the street and I’m there. It all depends on what you want. League tables are a good gauge on which universities are better, but i think it’s better to set yourself your own ‘rules’ (example: in a city, outside a city, good shopping, etc.) I also know at least one person who has been or is still at all the universities that I’ve applied to, so it’s good to ask people who actually go to the universities to see what it’s like

There’s a website (i think it’s called Unistats or something) where you can read reviews about the universities, it’d very helpful.

Good luck with your choices and your application. I hope I haven’t replied too late.1reply

Mind you, when people at UoY are asked we say “York” too and then when pressed further say “the proper one”.

“I go to Sheffield” could mean either Hallam or the ‘proper one’.

My boyfriend’s sister went to ‘Hull’. Turns out she went to East Riding College.
Hull university isn’t even in bloody Hull! So god knows why people call it that anyway!
It’s in Cottingham.

Nobody really cares. They just go to a university in York.

P.S. I mostly say York just because I can’t be bothered to type out York St. John

There’s too many capitals …show moreHull University is in Hull, on Cottingham road. One of the Resi’s is in Cottingham (The Lawns, I think).

As for the low rating of Yorksj, it is, as was said, down to the fact it only recently achieved University status, in Oct 06 IIRC. Which means degree’s awarded in 2009 where still issued by the University of Leeds. The reason entry requirements where low to begin with was down to a couple of reasons (related):

1) The very fact it was a new University, it needed to guarentee that it would have people enrolling.

2) Because it was new, it wasn’t well heard of, as people on this thread have proved. It had to compete with York, which was an established University.

I imagine once it establishes itself, it will start to compete.

It is good for a number of subjects, Sports and Education to name a couple. I’ve applied to do my PGCE there, primarily because I love York, and because many of the NQTs highly recommended it.0reply

Hull university is called like that because it is in Hull, east riding College is in Beverley, not far away from Hull.0replyAnonymous #1Report1 year ago#40(Original post by florencebear)
Why do you want to go to a ‘prestigious’ university anyway? It really doesn’t matter, in the grand scheme of things, which university you went to. People who graduate from Oxford or Cambridge deserve no more respect than someone who graduated from York St Johns.

Most employers these days are not bothered about where you went to uni. That’s a fact.

What do you want to study anyway cos York St johns is one of the best universities in the country for a couple of subjects.

York is a lovely, cheap city and you would probably enjoy life as a student in York just as much Oxford or somewhere like that.…show morePREACH🙌🏻0replystart new discussion123
