Is UC Davis A Good School For Engineering

Last Updated on January 17, 2023

UC Davis is an outstanding school for engineering students! It offers a “World Rankings” overview of how the school ranks in over 50 of the most competitive academic disciplines. It also boasts a phenomenally affordable price compared to other schools ranked as good for engineering. If these facts make you want to learn more, the interactive search map will show you all the places on campus where you can get more information.

UC Davis is a great school for studying engineering. It is one of the top 10 public engineering colleges in the country and has about the same number of total undergraduate students as its private counterpart Stanford has graduate students. As we have seen for most of the day, it is usually better to go to a public college than a private college because they are much cheaper.

UCD does not have nearly as developed a pre-professional culture as many other schools, like Stanford or MIT. You won’t find companies recruiting on campus for internships and full-time jobs like you would at other schools, and most students here do not go through that process. Students tend to make their own opportunities – which is good, because you won’t be competing with as many other students for the same positions. But it’s much harder to make big connections with employers straight out of college if you go here.

“These rankings highlight the transformative, interdisciplinary research in engineering and computer science provided by our graduate programs, with strengths in climate science, transportation and the food-energy-water nexus, among many others,” said Jeffery Gibeling, interim dean of the College of Engineering. “Our faculty, researchers and graduate students have shown tremendous adaptability and resilience in this last year, and we are thankful for their continuous efforts in maintaining strong research activities.”

The college’s highest-ranking graduate programs are biological and agricultural engineering and civil engineering, at number 3 and number 11, respectively. Additionally, six out of the ten programs either maintained or increased their position from last year’s rankings.

Here is the full list of graduate program rankings:

  • Aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering – ranked 25
  • Biological/agricultural engineering – ranked 3
  • Biomedical/bioengineering – ranked 24
  • Chemical engineering – ranked 30
  • Civil engineering – ranked 11
  • Computer engineering – ranked 37
  • Electrical engineering – ranked 37
  • Environmental engineering – ranked 14
  • Materials science and engineering – ranked 32
  • Mechanical engineering – ranked 37

The U.S. News and World Report ranking annually evaluates engineering graduate schools on a weighted score based on factors such as peer evaluations, research activity, student selectivity and faculty resources. Individual programs are based on peer assessments by department heads in each area.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on fall 2020 admissions, there was a shift in the ranking methodology. Schools that reported fewer than 25 percent (down from 50 percent previously) of their entering students GRE quantitative scores received less credit for those mean test scores in the rankings. Specifically, their percentile distributions were adjusted downward by the proportions of their student bodies that submitted test scores in relation to the 25 percent threshold. UC Davis engineering graduate programs do not require the GRE for Fall 2021 admission.
