Why you should apply for an internship with UNHCR
You should apply for an internship with UNHCR if you want to gain work experience and develop your skills, while gaining an insight into the work of UNHCR. It will give you a better understanding of the refugee situation, as well as the humanitarian sector in general.
Once you get your first job in the humanitarian sector, it’s important that you continue to build up your skills and expertise by taking advantage of opportunities to do so. This can include attending conferences or workshops (which are often full-time jobs), undertaking further study at university or distance learning courses on relevant subjects such as statistics, public relations or health management systems – amongst others – depending on what kind of role interests you most within this field.
UNHCR internships are not remunerated.
As an intern with UNHCR, you will not receive a salary. The agency is funded by voluntary contributions from governments and individuals, which means that interns are expected to pay their own travel expenses, living costs and other expenses related to their internship.
UNHCR has a very limited budget for international staff; therefore we are unable to provide any kind of stipend or reimbursement for interns’ expenses. Interns must be self-reliant and responsible for covering all costs related to their participation in the internship program (e.g., transportation between home/school/office during your stay in Geneva).
