What Are Fashion Design Internship Opportunities?
A fashion design internship allows a student to gain hands-on experience in the fashion industry. There are training opportunities available with fashion magazines, fashion retailers, fashion designers, and other fashion-related businesses. The intern program can vary from a couple of weeks over the summer to many months. Your responsibilities change depending on what part of the industry you study. Your duties may include researching season trends, buying textile and material, assisting with sewing and pattern making, setting up a merchandise line, completing clothing inventory, learning to promote a brand, or handling administrative tasks.
What Are the Qualifications to Get a Fashion Design Internship?
Most candidates who get a fashion design internship are students currently pursuing fashion degrees or recently graduated applicants. You should start by contacting a designer or brand you are familiar with and would love to work under their influence. Seeking out smaller designers limits the competition and improves your chances. It is also beneficial to have a portfolio of your personal brand and skills to show the work you have already completed. Additional qualifications include knowledge of the designer and brand, familiarity with various fabrics, and proficiency with industry terminology.
