International Students: The Facts

A global education

  • Choose the UK as your study abroad destination to experience the different cultures of the United Kingdom, and you’ll also meet students from all over the world – more than 430,00 students every year come from overseas to study in the UK!

Facts and figures

In this section you can find out:

  • Most popular subjects and universities for international students
  • Percentage of overseas students by university
  • Which countries international students come from
  • What subjects international students study
  • Which universities international students study at

But, before you look further, it is important to know that the data we have used are based solely on the numbers of international students attending a particular university and say nothing about the quality of that university.

Useful websites for international students

  • If you’re thinking of studying in the UK for your undergraduate or postgraduate degree, you’ll have lots of questions. Ask us a question and our experts will be happy to answer them for you and offer any further advice they can.
  • We also recommend the British Council website, where you can find details of their support services for international students.
  • The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) is another useful source of advice and information on issues like immigration, permission to work and tuition fee status.

Background research

  • The data displayed in these tables are based on overseas students enrolling in all years of first degree courses at UK universities in 2016–17 and are the latest figures available. They exclude those students whose complete study programmes were outside the UK but include the majority of students taking part in EU exchange programmes such as ERASMUS, TEMPUS and LINGUA at UK universities.

The Most Popular Subjects and Universities for International Students

The tables list the UK universities by number of international students in the 25 most popular subject areas. Each subject area has at least 1,000 students from overseas.

  • You can use these tables in conjunction with the university subject and league tables that measure quality, and the university profiles.
  • The 25 most popular subjects are  Accounting & Finance, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering, Architecture, Art & Design, Biological Sciences, Business & Management Studies, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Communication & Media Studies, Computer Science, Drama, Dance & Cinematics, Economics, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, English, Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation & Tourism, Law, Marketing, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, Music, Pharmacology & Pharmacy, Physics & Astronomy, Politics, and Psychology.

5 Things All International Students Should Know

So you’ve been accepted to the school of your choice and now you’re ready to take the steps to head over to the US and begin your studies. There is sure to be lots to do before you embark on your journey. Some tasks will certainly take higher priority than others. But what might those tasks be? And what should you know that will help an international student like yourself ease into the transition? Here are 5 things all international students should know:

  1. Each international student will require a visa to study in the US. If you’re unsure of which one applies to you or how to go about obtaining it.
  2. Some schools will require that international students have insurance while they study in the US. Be sure to check what your school mandates. If your school does require insurance.
  3. Have your transportation plans in place. Be sure to know how to find the best fares for flights and for transport upon your arrival. Some schools offer international student assistance that includes transport from their moment of arrival, so ask if your school participates in such kind of program. This will be particularly helpful if your English is limited.
  4. Research the best plan for purchasing or renting textbooks. The cost of textbooks fluctuate significantly depending on the options you choose. Students will want to be informed of the least expensive ways to obtain the books they need in order to keep costs down.
  5. Decide if you will want to work while you study. Then, make sure you are eligible to do so. If you are, then know your options moving forward. Many schools have programs on campus, and for some that don’t, outside alternatives are available. Be prepared to be diligent about budgeting time for both work and studies if you choose this route.

You’ll have plenty of decisions to make as a US-bound international student, but many of those decisions can be made easier with the right sources. With advice from people familiar with the process and your own adequate research, you’ll have all your ducks in a row just in time to start a successful semester.

10 Things International Students Should Know About U.S Universities

There are many reasons to choose U.S. Universities above others if you want to invest in your education. With more than 4,000 colleges and universities, the range of choices in the American country is diverse, with many cultural and academic opportunities for international students. An additional advantage is that you will get to communicate with native English speakers, which is a great way to enhance your English speaking skills.

America is well known for having a different set of rules when it comes down to higher education. And you ought to research your college’s regulations before deciding to enroll in one of them. So we have gathered some tips to ease the anxiety of your main question: how to survive in the U.S.A. as an international student? Read on and find out.

1. No universal system of college admissions

You will see for yourself that colleges differ when it comes down to the admission process. None of them has a uniformed way of asking applicants to follow a test-optional policy, submitting SAT/ACT scores, or elaborating their skills through essays. Be prepared for an extremely selective system that pays close attention to the details you provide in your application

2. Associate’s degrees

In the U.S. Education system, there are two types of undergraduate degrees. A two-year degree is called an Associate’s degree. There are different types of Associate degrees. Both the A.A. degree (or Associate of Arts degree) and A.S. degree (Associate of Science degree) are designed to prepare students to transfer into a 4-year college or university. Other Associate degrees, such as an A.A.S. degree (Associate of Applied Science degree), are designed to prepare students to join the workforce immediately following their two years of study.

3. Bachelor’s degrees

The second type of undergraduate degree is called a Bachelor’s degree, and it usually lasts up to 4 years. Over 2,000 colleges and universities offer four-year programs in which students earn a Bachelor’s degree. The undergraduate bachelor’s degree is typically comprised of 120-128 semester credit hours, 60 of which may be transferred from an associate degree at a community college.

During those four years of studying, you will be called a freshman, sophomore, or junior. What’s exciting about the educational system of America is the curriculum of many undergraduate programs. Most of them are based on a “liberal arts” philosophy in which students are required to study courses from a range of subjects to form a broad educational foundation.

4. Master’s degrees

The master’s degree is the most frequently awarded graduate degree in the U.S., with 500.000 students earning it every year. There are many master’s degree programs in the U.S., and students typically spend between two to three years studying to finish’ grad school’. Some master’s degrees can be earned within a year of studying; however, you are obliged to complete six to eight advanced courses and go through an intensive study project/thesis. This phase shapes your researching skills and prepares you well for the big world of employment.

5. Extracurricular activities

If there’s one thing that is surely going to be appreciated both in your application process and once you’re already enrolled in a university – that will be your engagement in social activities. Volunteer work, community work, participation in public events and debates, initiative-taking, and leadership skills; you are expected to have some experience with these sorts of activities and to keep doing so while studying. Ultimately, you will have to join a club, sport’s team, or theatre – whatever it is that provides a sense of creativity to your daily routine.

6. Expenses are not low

Unless you have earned yourself a full scholarship, bear in mind that the costs of studying in the U.S. are extremely high. Tuition in the U.S. is growing considerably— and that is something that can be identified as a worldwide trend. International students also often pay additional fees that local students do not pay for their education, not to mention all the added costs of travel and relocation. During your application, you will be required to prove to the university, to the consular officer, and perhaps to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses and health insurance, as well as university’s tuition and fees.

7. Accommodation options

Depending on your financial means, there are three accommodation alternatives that college students tend to follow:

a) On-campus dormitories

Once you enroll in a U.S. school, the Admissions Department or International Student Office will most likely send you a “pre-departure orientation” packet. Options for where to live are generally included in this information.

b) Off-campus apartments

Some U.S. schools do not provide on-campus accommodations for international students. However, an off-campus housing office will assist you in finding an appropriate place to live. Often, the office coordinates activities to help students find a compatible roommate to share expenses

c) Homestays

In a homestay arrangement, students are usually placed with an American family within 20 to 45 minutes from their campus. If you choose this option, you will have your own room, and meals will be provided.

8. Popular majors

Many students in the U.S. study Business Administration, Communications, and Social Sciences. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are also popular and generally considered to be more demanding.

It’s important to note that degrees in the U.S. sometimes vary from degrees in your home country, even if they have the same name.

9. Ideal locations

Big cities in the U.S. like New York and Washington D.C. often attract international students. The city you study in is important for acquiring internships. If you study finance, for example, then you probably would prefer to study in Manhattan. But a political science major would have more resources in D.C.

10. The culture shock

Do not be surprised if you notice you’re quickly overwhelmed with the new situation, mentality, and culture in the U.S. Of course, there are differences from every country compared to the other. Still, the adjustment with the American culture takes a whole lot of effort. Make sure to take your time, and socialize with locals every once in a while. They can brief you on how to handle most of the things while being an international student in the U.S.

American colleges are unique for several reasons. Before arriving as an international student in the U.S., it’s important that you understand these differences and choose the university that fits you best. We hope we gave you a proper heads up so that you know what to expect upon moving to a whole new country.

Four things international students should know about studying in the US

Campus life at American universities can be intimidating for any student. With more than 3,000 institutions of higher learning across the country, and an average of 20.4 million college students, it is easy for even the most prepared student to feel lost in the system.

Remember that you are not alone. There are more than 1.1 million international students just like yourself studying in the US, and with a few easy tips, you will feel right at home enjoying the American collegiate experience that drew you to the country in the first place.

1. Know the rules of “the game”

Knowing the hierarchy and structure of the university can help you feel part of the community, and also helps you to know where to turn for assistance when you need it. Before attending an American university, it is important to do some research on the structure, expectations, and vocabulary of US academia.

Looking up titles such as president (chief operating officer), provost (chief academic officer), registrar (person in charge of course selection), resident director (person in charge of student accommodation), and more will help you know who you are talking to and who is in charge.

When it comes to grading, marks in the US are given as a percentage out of 100, and then converted into a letter grade. A course syllabus, handed out at the start of the course, usually includes how your grade is compiled for that course. For example, acing the test is not always enough to pass a class in the United States.

Many classes dedicate a percentage of your grade to your class participation, attendance, projects, and other elements. Every class is different, but a syllabus acts as a contract between student and teacher that outlines what will be covered, when, and how. Use this as your guide and to remember faculty members’ names, title, office locations, and office hours.

Lastly, academic work in the US can be challenging, often with a significant amount of reading and writing. Being prepared for that can help to avoid any surprises.

2. Look up your student support resources before you go

The international office at any university is more than just a place for mixers and potlucks, though these are fun. The international office is an international student’s first point of contact at school, and quickly becomes a home away from home.

Not sure where to go or who to ask? Start at the international office, and they can give you advice on the best next steps. Don’t forget that they are expertly trained professionals who are there to guide and advise you.

Beyond this, US universities offer a plethora of student support services that are specifically designed to ensure all students have the network of support they need to succeed in their education. You never know when you’ll need help writing a paper, need medicine when you’re feeling sick, or need someone to talk to if you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

Make it a point to walk around and visit these critical resources: housing services, counselling services, the student health centre, student attorney (legal services), campus police, tutoring services and writing centre.

In addition to services, campuses also offer other things such as travel grants, scholarships, research offices, and mentoring.

3. Learn to network and take notes

This is a unique opportunity to learn about a culture other than your own. However, don’t forget that it allows you to educate your new community about your own life and culture back home.

Saying yes to opportunities is how you learn about these things and meet new people. While it may be easy to stick with other international students when you first get to campus, try to branch out and attend events with American students as well. There should be a full list of student organisations on your university website or through your university’s student centre.

Don’t be nervous about meeting US students. Being an international student means you have a unique perspective that others may not have. If you are worried about interacting with strangers, think about how to summarise yourself in a few sentences. If you practise how to introduce yourself and what you want to say, it will make talking to people a little easier.

4. You do not need to know everything and don’t be afraid to ask for help

Never be afraid to raise your hand or ask for clarification when you don’t quite understand something. That extends beyond the classroom too.

While it is important to prepare for culture shock and familiarise yourself with your campus, higher education is meant to be a time to learn and explore as a community. It is helpful to remember that a lot of the other students on campus are also likely to be away from home and are adjusting to a new place too.

So the main things to remember: know your resources, get involved, say yes to everything, and be sure to connect with as many people as you can.

Remember that this a unique opportunity that you will spend the rest of your life reflecting upon – so make the most of it.

Everything You Need to Know About Student Visas

If you want to attend a university in the United States, you need a student visa. So what’s the student visa process like? Read on to find out.

Definitely, I was nervous about the interview,” says Angela Qu. “I heard from friends that even with an offer of admission from a school, you could still get rejected for a visa.”

Andrew Wu, on the other hand, was not particularly concerned. He had traveled to many countries when he was younger and was comfortable with different types of people. And his English was quite good, so he wasn’t worried about his ability to communicate during the visa interview.

Angela and Andrew are both from China, and they wanted to come to the United States for university. But, even though they were accepted to their schools, as non-citizens they had to take an extra step before arriving for the first day of classes: getting a student visa.

A walk through the visa application process

To be eligible to study at a college or university in the United States, foreign students must have a passport valid for travel to the United States, for at least six months after the time you will be in the United States. Then you must find, apply to, and be accepted by an accredited school here. Once accepted, the next step is to apply for a student visa, known as an F-1 visa, from the US government. This gives students permission to come to the United States to study.

The F-1 visa is specifically for students who plan to get a degree at a college or university in the United States. It’s the most common type of student visa. (It’s possible to visit the United States on a visitor B visa and take a short, recreational class. But you can’t take any courses that give credit toward a degree on a B visa.)

Being accepted by a US university is the first step. The school will then send you official documentation that allows you to apply for a student visa. That includes an acceptance letter and an I-20 form: Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status—for Academic and Language Students.

Once you get that information, the next step is to apply online for your visa. This includes filling out a form DS-160 (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application), submitting a photo, and paying a non-refundable application fee. When you apply, you choose a specific US embassy or consulate to submit the form to, usually the one nearest to your home.

The application forms and interviews are all in English. You are not allowed to complete the forms in another language, other than giving your full name in your native alphabet.

The next step is to schedule an appointment at the nearest US embassy or consulate for an interview. This is usually the same place as the embassy or consulate you applied to. However, if necessary, it’s possible to go for your interview at a different consulate or embassy, though it may be difficult to qualify for a visa if you’re applying outside the country of your permanent residence. To get an appointment at another location, you just need the barcode from the confirmation page of your DS-160 form when making the interview appointment.

Students’ visa interview stories

Angela is a recent college graduate with a degree in Communications. She transferred to Michigan State University as a sophomore. Andrew was a graduate student studying Management at Northeastern University in Boston. And Silvia Chan studied at Northeastern University in the Finance and Accounting program. All three students live in China, and all three had different experiences visiting the embassy to get their visas.

Silvia had to apply for her visa twice. They denied her visa the first time she applied, after her interview at the US embassy in Hong Kong. She was confused by a question, and her answer caused the interviewer to think that she wanted to immigrate to the United States permanently. “I mistakenly told them I was going to live with my mom, when I meant to say I’d be living in a homestay in the US,” she says. “And once the interviewer thinks you are really immigrating, they are going to reject you.” (The US government is looking to confirm that a student wants to study abroad and then return home.)

The interviewers are generally trying to discover three key pieces of information when interviewing students for their F-1 visa:

1. Why the student chose a particular university and academic discipline/major

2. The student’s intentions regarding studying in the United States and returning to their home country

3. The student’s financial ability to live and study in the United States (without looking for off-campus employment)

Though Andrew wasn’t nervous before his interview, many of his friends were. The interviews are conducted in English, and he said some of his friends were worried about their English skills. Because they were nervous, their interviews didn’t go well, and some of them didn’t get a visa. But that isn’t the end of the story if that happens; like Silvia you can simply schedule another interview to try again.

There is a lot of security to go through to get into the embassy, and it can feel intimidating for some students. It can also take a long time to get through. “Be on time,” says Silvia. “Get there 30–60 minutes early. There is a line and the process takes time, especially if you didn’t pay the fee online and have to pay it at the embassy.”

In addition, students are not allowed to bring mobile phones, computers, or other electronic devices with them into the building for the interview. In some embassies, students cannot bring in liquids and may even have to turn in their identification before they are allowed to enter. If you’re 18 or older, you’re also not allowed to bring your parents inside with you.

Once you get into the room for the interview, there may be many other people there with you, and you’ll probably have to wait in line. In the US embassy in Hong Kong, for example, as in many embassies, the interviews are conducted at a large counter, a bit like at a bank. Several one-on-one interviews may be happening at the same time. “They call your number, you hand them your papers, and they just start asking questions,” says Silvia.

“If you speak loudly, others can hear,” she says. “And Chinese people really care about not looking awkward in public. So that is one reason people are afraid and nervous about speaking English and about the interview.”

Luckily, a lot of embassies will tell you almost immediately after your interview if you are approved, so you leave knowing the outcome. However, a small number of visas may require additional processing, which usually takes no longer than 60 days.

After you arrive in the United States

Visas can be issued as early as 120 days before the first day of classes. However, students are not allowed to enter the United States more than 30 days before the start date. Andrew got his visa about two months after applying.

The F-1 visa allows a student to enter the United States. Once they’re here, they must maintain status as a student. “There are certain rules to follow,” says Patty Croom, Associate Director for International Admissions at Michigan State University. “Students are limited to working only on campus during the school year. They may only work off campus with pre-authorization and under certain conditions, such as internships. And they must be full-time students, with a certain number of credits. The school has to report to the government which students showed up and enrolled each semester.”

International students should work closely with their university to maintain their status, adhere to the appropriate regulations, and make sure they’re following the rules for their program. For example, some students have an opportunity to stay in the States for a year after completing a degree to do field work, depending on the subject they studied. Or some students are allowed to do optional practical training.

Some visas are now even issued for five years to cover the full length of study. If you do need to renew your student visa, it’s fairly easy as long as you maintain your status as a student—but you should still give yourself plenty of time to complete the process.

When Angela applied for a visa renewal from her home in China one summer, she almost didn’t get it in time; it arrived the day before her flight to the United States. If she missed her flight, it would have cost her thousands of dollars to reschedule. The embassy processing her renewal was overwhelmed with visa applications and it took longer than expected. “Make sure to apply for your visa as soon as possible,” she says. “Normally you will get it in time, but you should plan that something could go wrong.”

“Students express the most anxiety about not being able to qualify for a student visa,” says Croom. “But most students do get it. It’s a doable process, and the government has worked to make sure that students don’t have to wait too long to get their visa.”

Andrew’s advice for students is to remember there is effort involved. “You need a lot of documentation,” he says. “Pay attention to the details. If you know someone who has already studied abroad and has experience, ask him or her for help. They can share their experience and help you through the process.”

Silvia’s advice to students applying for an F-1 visa for the first time is to relax when it comes to the interview process. “Just be confident,” she says. “Even if you think your English isn’t good enough. The embassy staff is there for you. And if you don’t understand a question, ask the interviewer to explain it to you.”

Angela was really nervous when she went in for her interview. It was a busy day with a lot of people there, and not everyone in the embassy was nice to her—except the man who interviewed her. “He was very nice,” she says. “He could see I was nervous. He asked a few questions, then told me congratulations—I was getting my visa. I smiled a big smile. And he smiled a big smile back.”

What do you need to get a student visa?

Documentation you will definitely need:

  • Passport, valid for at least six months past the time you will be staying in the United States
  • Barcode from the confirmation page of form DS-160 (your nonimmigrant visa application)
  • Receipt for payment of application fee
  • Photo (to upload while filling out the DS-160 form)
  • Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant F-1 Student Status—for Academic and Language Students from the school where you will be studying)

You may also need (depending on which embassy or consulate you go to):

  • Evidence that you are academically ready, such as transcripts, diplomas, degrees from schools you attended, or standardized test scores required by the US university
  • Evidence of your intent to depart the United States when you get your degreeEvidence of how you will pay your education, living, and travel costs

9 tips for international students moving to the UK

If you’re an international student (from the EU or somewhere further afield) coming to the UK to study, we get that it can be a bit overwhelming – especially if it’s your first time at uni. Recent studies show that the majority of overseas students are undergraduates!

From visas and tuition fees, to health insurance and bank accounts, there’s a lot to consider – so we’ve broken it down in this step-by-step guide.

We spoke to a number of international students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) and asked them what they wished they’d known before arriving in the UK to study. Here are the top nine things you need to consider before making the leap across the pond!

International student checklist

  1. Plan your funding and research scholarships

Before you do anything else, you need to make sure you have the finances to fund your degree.

EU students are eligible for Student Finance in the UK, meaning the cost of your tuition fees is covered by a loan that you’ll pay back at a later date.

EU students remain eligible for Student Finance for the 2019/2020 academic year. The status of funding for EU students beyond this date is yet to be confirmed – but we’ll let you know as soon as we do!

However, students from outside the EU (apart from in certain specific circumstances) aren’t eligible for the loan, and you’ll have to fund your degree yourself. Plus, you’ll often have to pay fees much higher than what UK students pay – anything from £10,000 – £35,000 a year.

Don’t forget that for your visa application to be successful, you’ll need to provide evidence that you can cover this cost, as well as your living expenses.

If you don’t have the money to pay for yourself, there are options available. In our complete guide to international student funding and scholarships we cover loads of opportunities which you might be eligible for, and you could also look into education loans or exchange programmes.

For more information on how much UK tuition fees cost for international students and eligibility criteria for UK student finance, check our guide to tuition fees for international students.

  2. Organise your student visa

As an international student coming to the UK you might need to apply for a visa, depending on which country you’re from.

    EU, EEA or Swiss nationals

If you’re a national of a country in the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA), or you’re Swiss, then you won’t need to apply for a visa to study in the UK.

You’ll be able to travel to the UK using your normal passport – just don’t forget that you’ll need to sort some form of health insurance, such as an EHIC card.

    Non-EU nationals

If you’re from a country outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, you’ll need to apply for a visa to study in the UK.

If you’ll be studying in the UK for less than six months, you’ll need a short-term student visa (but note that with this visa you won’t be able to work in the UK, including work placements as part of your course and part-time jobs – if you need to work, apply for a Tier 4 visa instead).

If your course lasts for longer than six months, you’ll need a Tier 4 (general) student visa.

Here’s everything you need to apply:

    • Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) – This is a 14-digit reference number you’ll receive from your university once you accept your offer
    •  Proof of finances – You’ll need to prove that you have enough money to pay for your first year of tuition fees, or your whole course if it’s less than a year. On top of this, you need to prove you have £1,015 (£1,265 for those studying in London) per month to cover your living expenses. This can either be through self-funding, an official sponsorship or an education loan
    • English language skills – You’ll have to prove you meet the minimum level of English language proficiency, usually by taking a secure English language test (SELT).

The Tier 4 visa costs £348 if you’re applying from outside the UK, and you’ll need to be in your home country to apply.

You may also have to pay a healthcare surcharge as part of your visa application. This costs £150 per year and will allow you to use the NHS.

You can only apply for your visa three months before you start your course, but it’s best to apply as soon as possible as it can take a few weeks to hear back. Here’s a list of visa processing times for each country.

  3. Prepare for British life

Culturally, the UK is very diverse and welcoming of people from all around the world. You’ll find plenty of fellow international students at all universities, and most will have societies to help you meet like-minded people, and those from similar backgrounds.

We would also recommend searching for Facebook groups related to your university (they often have groups specifically for international students) so you can discuss any questions you have and even make some friends before you arrive!

In case you weren’t already aware, the UK is known for its cold and wet weather! Pack lots of warm clothes and a waterproof coat for the winter months, and don’t expect summer to be very hot very often.

It’s not student budget (or environmentally) friendly to have the heating on all the time (although we have tricks to help you save on your energy bills), so warm clothes are essential.

  4.  Sort your student accommodation

You’ll want to get your accommodation sorted before you land in the UK – the last thing you want is to turn up and have nowhere to stay!

Your first port of call should be your university itself, as they will often offer guarantees to house all students who apply before a certain date.

Most students either live in university accommodation (called ‘halls of residence’ or ‘halls’ for short) or rent a room from a private landlord.

Living in halls is best for your first year of study, as it removes the hassle of trying to find a suitable room elsewhere, and some universities even have halls specifically for international students to help you make friends easily.

These will either be self-catered (meaning you’ll have access to a shared kitchen to cook your own meals), or catered (meaning your meals will be provided at a canteen). If you’re looking to save some money, self-catered is by far the cheaper option, and we have loads of student recipes to help you develop your culinary skills!

Unlike American universities, the vast majority of rooms both in halls and private housing are single occupancy – meaning you won’t have a roommate, but a room to yourself.

If you’re not interested in halls and you’d prefer to do the accommodation hunt yourself, check out our student letting agents directory to find houses in your university area and consult our guide to viewing student houses so you know what to watch out for!

And, of course, if you’re not sure where you’d like to live, check out our guide comparing all your options.

  1. Make sure you’ve got health insurance

All international students, from both inside and outside the EU, will need to prove they have health insurance to cover them for any healthcare they need while in the UK. Here’s how it’s done:

    EU nationals

If you’re from the EU, organising your health insurance is a doddle.

You’ll just need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which will entitle you to free or reduced healthcare from the National Health Service (NHS) while you’re here in the UK.

If you don’t have one, it’s as simple as applying for one through your home country’s national health insurance provider.

    Non-EU nationals

If you’re a student from a country outside the EU, you’ll have to pay a health surcharge as part of your visa application, giving you access to the NHS during your stay here.

Also check any health insurance you already have, as that may also cover you while you’re abroad.

However, don’t forget that neither the EHIC or health surcharge will cover any extra expenses or losses incurred as a result of illness or injury – cancelled travel plans or lost course fees, for example.

Endsleigh offer travel insurance for international students coming to the UK which will cover these extra expenses.

  2. Set up a student bank account

If you’re staying in the UK for longer than a few months (so longer than a semester), we would recommend setting up a bank account.

This will make it easier to pay bills, keep your money safe, and avoid foreign currency charges you’d otherwise be paying if you used a non-UK bank account to pay for things in Britain.

Setting up a bank account can be a lengthy process, as banks will need lots of information to verify your identity and credit rating.

Check whether you’re able to get the ball rolling from your home country to save time, and look into whether your current bank has any links to UK banks, as this will likely make the process smoother.

How to set up a bank account in the UK

In order to open a bank account while you’re here in the UK, you will need the following:

    •  A valid passport
    •  A valid visa – Non-EU students only
    •  Proof of address in the UK – A tenancy agreement or utility bill should suffice
    •  Proof of address in your home country
    •  Proof of student status – You’ll normally receive this once you enrol at university
    •  Proof of income  This may mean a credit check and interview to establish you will be able to maintain the account.

You’ll almost certainly have to attend the bank in person to get everything set up, so don’t expect to be able to do everything on your laptop!

Student bank accounts are a great option, as they offer numerous benefits including an interest-free overdraft of up to £2,000. However, it’s worth knowing that not all banks offer student bank accounts to international students (you’ll still be able to open a regular current account, so don’t sweat!).

Since it can take a while to get a bank account set up, and around 10 days for your debit card to arrive, it’s best to take money with you to cover the first month of your stay – we’d recommend a pre-paid card for this, as carrying large wads of cash can be unsafe.

See our guide to the best UK international student bank accounts, and use our list as a starting point to find an account that best suits you.

  3. Work out the cheapest way to make international calls

If you’re panicking about whether your current phone will work in the UK, the answer is most likely, yes!

The UK operates on the same GSM band as most of the world, but if you’re coming from Japan or North/South America, your phone may not work in the UK, so this is worth checking.

If your phone doesn’t look like it will work here, it might be worth selling it for cash and buying a new one. Check out our guide to getting the cheapest student mobile phone contract here!

However, the worst thing you can do is keep your current SIM card in your phone while studying in the UK. You’ll pay extremely high charges for calling back home, as well as local numbers.

Here are our top tips for keeping connected on the cheap!

    For calling local numbers

If you already have a mobile phone then you will need a new SIM card. With a Pay As You Go (PAYG) SIM you’ll need to top up your phone with credit, which is a good way of keeping track of your spending but can be a hassle if your credit runs out at an awkward time.

Monthly contracts are usually better value for money, as you’ll likely get unlimited (or close to) minutes and texts, but you will have to pay out every month and this comes with added long-term responsibility. The best deals we know of are all right here.

If you would like a new phone, check out our comparison tool to get a great deal that will have minutes, texts and data bundled together for a low monthly price. You can even keep the phone when the contract finishes.

But if you’re keeping a phone you bought in your home country, you’ll need to unlock it first before you can start using your new sim card!

    For calling back home

In recent years there have been lots of low-cost international call providers popping up, such as Lebara, LycaMobile and RebTel. However, from what we’ve gathered, RebTel offer the best value, with some calls under 1p a minute and your first call free.

Alternatively, use services like Skype, FaceTime (iOS only), ViberFacebook Messenger and WhatsApp to have audio and video chats for free!

  1. Figure out public transport

Getting to grips with the public transport system when you first land in a country can be a bit daunting – so here’s a simple guide.

    Local travel

All cities will have a local bus service which is often the most convenient way of travelling around a city. First suss out how far away you’re going to be living from campus, and whether it’s worth investing in a student bus pass to save some cash.

Bigger cities might also have a subway system, like the Tube in London or the Metro in Newcastle, and you might be able to invest in a yearly pass to help keep costs down. For travel in London specifically, take a look at the Oyster card – it is by far the cheapest option and can be used across various different modes of transport.

If you’re confident enough, travelling by bike is a great way to save money while being environmentally friendly too.

    National travel

If you’re over in the UK for the first time, you’ll probably want to visit a few different cities and sights while you’re here.

Your two main options here are coach or train.

Trains are often the quickest and most comfortable way to get around the UK. However, tickets should be booked as early as possible to save money – check out our guide to saving on train fares.

You’ll probably also want to invest in a 16–25 Railcard or a 26–30 Railcard, which will save you a third on all rail fares!

Coaches are a cheaper alternative to trains, but they can take twice as long to get from A to B.

Our top pick for saving money is Megabus, with journeys starting at £1 between the major cities. But if you can’t find a suitable arrival and departure point, then try National Express as they offer the largest coach network in the UK. We also have an extensive guide on how to save on coach travel for you to check out.

Travelling by plane is also an option for longer distances, for example if you’re travelling from London to Edinburgh, although it can be expensive.

  2. Know how many hours you’re allowed to work

If you want to make some extra cash while you’re studying, then you may be wondering what your rights and options to work in the UK are.

If you’re from a non-EU country, you’ll be able to work up to 20 hours per week while studying, and full-time during the holidays, as well as before and after your course starts.

If you’re coming from an EU country, you are free to work as many hours as you wish and can continue working as long as you’d like after graduation.

However, you shouldn’t rely on a part-time job as your main source of income to fund your living costs in the UK. While they’re a great way to boost your finances, you’ll unlikely be able to earn enough to live off, and working long shifts will distract from your studies. Here’s how to balance the two!
