The graduate program in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology at the University of Houston is one of oldest, largest, and most respected programs in the country. Since 1950, the UH I/O program has centered on the application of basic psychological research and theory with the goal of advancing science and practice in the field of I/O. Angelo State University

Angelo State University in San Angelo has a 42-credit Master of Science (MS) in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology. The program consists of core coursework, electives and a thesis or internship experience. Several of the program’s courses are unique since their schedules overlap and meet around the same time to allow first and second year students to interact with each other while completing projects, participating in discussions or listening to guest speakers. Core courses are available on-campus, while some electives may be available online.

St. Mary’s University-San Antonio

St. Mary’s University-San Antonio offers an MS in I/O Psychology that focuses on a scientist-practitioner model. Class sizes are small, as the program usually only admits 10 students each fall, and the program offers a unique mentoring program that allows alumni of the program to assist current graduate students. The program requires a comprehensive exam and a practicum experience that totals 225 hours. Students may also choose from a thesis or non-thesis option.

University of Houston

The University of Houston provides a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in I/O Psychology that can usually be completed in 4 years. The program places an emphasis on research, especially in the areas of stress and safety, and requires a dissertation. Students must also pass a comprehensive exam after completing coursework in topics like productivity, legal issues, work motivation, training and organizational psychology. The program also concludes with an internship experience to provide hands-on training and application of learned concepts.

Texas A&M University

College Station’s Texas A&M University offers a master’s and doctoral program in I/O Psychology. The master’s program is a 32-hour program that can be completed in 18 months and does not require a thesis. The doctoral program can be completed in 5 years, includes a master’s thesis, comprehensive exams and a dissertation and highly encourages students to participate in an internship experience. The doctoral program typically only admits 3 or 4 new students each fall, making it very competitive.

Rice University

Rice University, also in Houston, has a PhD program in I/O psychology that usually only admits about 10 students each year. Students in the program must complete a master’s thesis if they do not already have a master’s degree, as well as a dissertation. Other requirements for candidacy include coursework, a written exam, a research project and a conference presentation. The length of the program may vary based on a student’s background and research, but students must complete the program within 10 years.

Common Entrance Requirements

Students applying to I/O Psychology graduate programs in Texas usually need to hold a bachelor’s degree and take the GRE. Do I need a Master’s in Industrial Organizational Psychology
