The first step to becoming an EMT in New York City is to learn about the requirements for certification. An EMT is required to be certified by the New York State Department of Health (DOH). This means that they must complete a certain number of training hours and pass an exam.
The training hours required vary depending on whether an applicant is looking to become a volunteer or paid EMT. To become a volunteer, applicants must complete at least 100 hours of training (at least 50 hours must be hands-on). To become a paid employee, applicants must complete at least 200 hours of training (at least 100 hours must be hands-on).
Once this training has been completed, applicants will need to pass the National Registry Exam for EMTs. It costs $100 to take this exam and it is offered on several dates throughout the year. To register for this exam, you will need your DOH certificate number and your social security number. You may also need to provide proof of residency within New York City if you do not already have one.

New York EMT and Paramedics must complete and pass a State Sponsored EMS Course and examination process. New York does not rely on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Exam that many of the states in the USA are moving to.
The New York EMT and Paramedic exam covers the exact same material as the NREMT exam with exception to some changes in local protocols.
What are the Requirements to Get an EMT Certificate In New York?
Following are the pre-requisites that should be fulfilled by the EMT candidates:
- EMT candidate must be 18 years of age or more.
- He/she should have completed a state-approved EMT training program.
- He/she must possess a valid CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certificate.
- It is mandatory for the candidates to submit legal evidence of their U.S. nationality.
- The candidate should be free from any mental or bodily ailment.
- English fluency is a must for every applicant.
- The candidate must compulsorily pass a criminal background screening.
Apart from this, there are some special requirements that are also required to be accomplished, like submission of application and applicable fees, and completion of a state-recognized practical exam.

Step 1: Get EMT Training
The candidate must successfully complete EMT training before applying for certification. The candidate can contact the local EMS department or any community college that provides training programs.

Step 2: Background Check
To complete the process of certification, the candidate must undergo a criminal background check. For this, the candidate can contact his/her course coordinator.
Step 4: Apply For License
New York EMT licenses are acquired from the state. As testing is handled by New York State, Students are recommended to follow guidelines provided by your class instructor.
