Skyrim. The name conjures images of dragons, draugr, giant pillars of flame and a whole lot of snow. All that can be fun and all but what happens when you’re tired of all that? The answer is: Vampire Lord. You don’t have to be a vampire to play this awesome game or become one, it’s just something you could do.
Becoming a vampire in Skyrim is one of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of the game. Vampirism in Skyrim transforms you from being a mortal with the ability to pass out and die just like in the real world, to becoming powerful beings of the night with only a few drawbacks. In addition, sleeping in any bed except for your player home will give you a slight disadvantage or two. You can also become an invincible vampire lord by finding and equipping certain pieces of gear while being transformed as a vampire.
How To Become A Vampire Lord Skyrim
In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, two unique diseases make the player more powerful: Lycanthropy and Vampirism. Early on, contracting vampirism was all but a death sentence, as it was incredibly difficult to feed safely without alerting everyone in the area to the fact that there was a bloodsucking monster on the prowl. Not feeding led to weakness and eventually death, forcing the player to go back to an earlier save in hopes of finding the right balance they needed to survive or discovering the cure.

Skyrim’s Dawnguard DLC introduced a whole new breed of vampires: The Vampire Lord. If the player chose to side with Lord Harkon and the vampires at Castle Volkihar, they, too, could become a Vampire Lord and embrace a whole host of terrifying new powers that made it easier to not only survive but embrace the disease and live eternally.

Serana from Skyrim
Regardless of who the player eventually sides with, they’ll be asked by Isran, leader of the Dawnguard, to look into what the vampires are searching for. This will lead to the discovery of Serana, who was locked away in Dimhollow Crypt. Escort her home to Castle Volkihar, where her father, Lord Harkon, will offer a unique gift as repayment for returning his daughter to him: an opportunity to become a Vampire Lord.
Vampire Lords automatically receive 100 points to their Magicka, Health and Stamina; however, they have -60 to each of those stats while outside in daylight. Magicka regenerates 2% faster, but all stats regenerate 90% slower in daylight than normal. They gain access to several unique spells, like Vampiric Drain and the ability to turn into a swarm of bats. Vampire Lords also gain unarmed damage similar to Argonians and Khajiit, and their claw attack is incredibly strong by comparison.
They also have access to a unique skill tree that grants them new abilities as they acquire a certain number of kills in their Vampire Lord form that benefit their stats and abilities. For example, they gain Blood Magic skills to summon gargoyles to their aid or use their vampiric grip to draw enemies closer to them in combat. Eventually, they gain the power to turn into an invulnerable mist that allows them to avoid taking damage while their stats regenerate.

If the Dragonborn refuses Harkon’s offer and joins the Dawnguard, there are still two other opportunities to receive the gift. The first comes during Serana’s quest to find her mother in the Soul Cairn. Because living beings cannot travel through the Soul Cairn, Serana will offer to turn them into a vampire. The last opportunity comes after defeating Lord Harkon. Serana will still offer to turn the Dragonborn into a Vampire Lord if they ask.
In the event that the player has already contracted Sanguinaris Vampirus, the Vampire Lord strain of the virus is much more powerful and will overtake the original virus, granting the Dragonborn access to a whole new list of abilities and powers. If the Dragonborn is already a werewolf, they will be immune to contracting the virus under regular circumstances, but Lord Harkon’s gift will overpower the lycanthropy virus if willingly accepted.
There is no legitimate way to maintain both lycanthropy and vampirism at the same time, although there are workarounds that allow a player who has already accepted the Vampire Lord virus to also contract the lycanthropy virus during the Companions questline. Arriving with Serana when Skjor offers the gift of lycanthropy and then turning into a Vampire Lord while drinking from the blood pool may allow the player to access both forms, but not at the same time. They may have access to both skill trees, which can be leveled up the way they normally would, but this is not guaranteed to work.
