In order to become a Texas real estate appraiser, you must first fulfill the state’s education requirements. The amount of education that is required varies based on which type of appraisal license you plan on applying for: residential, commercial/industrial, or general property.

Once you’ve fulfilled the state’s education requirements and passed its exams, then it’s time to build your career as a Texas real estate appraiser!

Becoming a Texas Real Estate Appraiser is a great way to make a living. The job offers flexibility, independence and good pay.

In order to become a Texas real estate appraiser, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Have earned an associate’s degree in real estate appraisal from an accredited college or university
  3. Have completed two days of classroom instruction on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and one day of classroom instruction on Texas law pertaining to real estate appraisers within the last three years
  4. Passed the National USPAP Fundamentals Exam with a score of 70 percent or higher within the last three years
  5. Completed 30 hours of acceptable coursework in appraisal theory within the last three years

TALCB Required Qualifying Education (QE) Courses
The following courses are required by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) and must be completed by every license applicant. All of the courses are also available at a discounted rate when purchased together in one of the QE programs listed above.

Supervisor-Trainee Course for Texas
The Supervisor-Trainee Appraiser course addresses the requirements and responsibilities of supervisory appraisers as well as expectations for Trainee Appraisers. This course meets the requirements established by the Appraiser Qualifications Board (AQB) of The Appraisal Foundation in its 2015 Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria. This course will increase your understanding of the responsibilities and obligations of both the Trainee Appraiser and the Supervisory Appraiser within the context of the Trainee – Supervisor relationship. You will also learn the applicable state and local jurisdictional requirements and review relevant USPAP obligations.
