How To Apply For MS In USA

As the world’s most popular study abroad destination, the USA has plenty to offer you as an international postgraduate. You’ll be one of over 900,000 overseas students, many of whom study on the country’s renowned graduate programmes. Here is a guide on how to apply for MS in USA.

 Exams Required

As mentioned, entry to MS courses in the US universities requires the aspirant to appear for standardised tests as set by the university. One should, ideally, register for tests between July and August so that test scores are ready by the time one applies to universities. This leaves room for retests if one is not satisfied with his/her test score. Many universities in the US require the average or minimum score for entry into MS. So, one can decide to sit for the retest depending on the required score. Here are some of the common standardised tests required for entry into MS in the US.

  • GRE: GRE is mandatory for almost all MS level programmes in the USA, including management studies. While all universities require GRE general test score, there are some others which also ask the student to take GRE subject tests.
  • TOEFL: TOEFL is an English proficiency test for students from non-native English speaking countries.
  • IELTS: IELTS is also an English proficiency test for students from non- native English speaking countries.
  • MCAT: Students interested in pursuing medical studies in the US have to appear for MCAT
  • LSAT: LSAT is for law aspirants

 Eligibility

Before going ahead with the application process, it is important to check the eligibility requirements for the MS course in the US. While different courses have different sets of requirements, here are some of the general eligibility criteria required for the programme

16 years education: The first thing to keep in mind before opting for an MS is that a majority of the universities in the USA require the student to have a minimum of 16 years of education. Therefore, the completion of at least 4 years of education (graduation or diploma) after 10+2 is the basic criteria. However, some schools in the USA also accept 3-year undergraduate degrees. Besides, students have the option of getting their academic transcripts evaluated by either the university or private organisations like WES which can then term degree to be equivalent to a US four-year degree. But for that one needs to fulfill certain criteria. WES demands that the candidate should have, at least, a first class degree and the college from where the candidate has passed out should have a good accreditation. Students who have completed their Master’s degree are also qualified to apply for MS in the US.

Standardised test: Admission for MS in the US universities requires the aspirant to take certain standardized entry level tests. Some of them are GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, MCAT and LSAT, among others.

Choose universities

The first step while applying for MS in the US is to make a list of universities which offer the candidate’s choice of programme. This should be done around the months of May or June of the previous year. Ideally, one should start the process of admission at least 15 months prior to admission. While the US admission cycle has three intakes — Fall, Spring and Summer — a majority of the programmes start in Fall i.e., around September.

Check deadlines

Once the candidate has made a list of the colleges of his choice, the next step should be to check the deadlines of the specific courses the candidate is applying for. Usually, universities in the US do not have a common deadline for all courses. Therefore, it is necessary to check the individual departments of the universities to know the opening and closing dates for applications to MS in the US. Usually, applications for Fall start around September and close between December-January, though some universities accept applications till February.

Also, the flexibility offered by the USA allows the student to apply for the course through three plans – Early admission plan, Regular admission and Rolling admission. Regular admission plan follows the same procedure of setting deadlines for admission by universities every year. On the other hand, early admission allows an aspirant to apply and fix admission before the start of the Regular admission. Rolling admission has the advantage of making application to the university of one’s choice anytime of the year, provided there are vacant seats.

Arrange application package

This is one of the most important parts while applying for MS in the US. Universities in the USA put heavy weightage on the application of the student. Besides academic transcripts, the US universities demand that the student introduce himself through intent statements and references. An ideal MS application package should have the following:

SOP: The Statement of Purpose is one of the most vital elements of the application package for admission into MS in the US.It details the applicant’s commitment of joining the programme and his goals in life. One important thing to remember while writing an SOP is that it should be brief, and reflect clarity regarding what the candidate wants from the programme. One should strictly adhere to word limit set by the concerned university or department.

LOR: Unlike the SOP, the Letter of Recommendation is an independent assessment of the candidate’s potential. Most universities require at least two to three recommendation letters.  It is advisable to have professors or employers to write recommendation letter for the candidate.

Essays: Different universities have different requirements for essays. Some universities might offer a random topic to write on. Others might ask for a relevant topic of the candidate’s interest. Besides, the number of essays to be submitted also differs. Generally, universities ask for 2-3 essays.

Resume: Some universities require the candidate to submit a CV along with the application form. It should contain basic information like date of birth, academic qualifications and achievements.

Academic transcripts: Academic transcripts include all the qualifications that the candidate will list in the application form. It is advisable for the candidate to start arranging transcripts from October itself.

Scores: Universities with a requirement of standardized score require results of the tests along with the application.

cost of ms in usa 2020

1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Exam Fee:

This is, usually, the first step towards the entire journey for your MS in the USA. This parameter is like the poker face – nobody knows whether it can make or break the chances; and hence, it has always been the most popular of all. You need to have a good GRE prep study plan. The cost of the exam is $205

Low scorers and a bunch of restless high scorers might retake the exam adding another $205. (or INR 15,200).

2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):

While you MIGHT skip the GRE test for your applications to the States (some universities do take in applications without GRE), TOEFL is something that you can’t skip. It is like a passport to the United States. The universities need to know your proficiency with the language and hence, it is a compulsory exam, if not at the time of applications, at least during the VISA interview. The cost of the exam is $170 .

3. Applying to US universities:

Fees for applying to each university vary from $50 (INR 3700) to $100 (INR 7400) with the former being the most common. However, applications are incomplete without sending your official test scores (GRE and TOEFL) through ETS, adding another $47 (GRE: $27 and TOEFL: $20)

On average, students apply to 10 US universities and the total estimate comes out to be as follows:
Application Fee ($60) + Sending GRE and TOEFL scores ($27 + $20) = $107. Let’s be on the safer (read higher) side and assume $110 per university. So, applications to 10 universities will be a whopping $1100

4. Other Expenses During Applications:

Now, this list might be long and will drastically vary from every applicant. Still, the normal expenses in this category are as follows:

a) Counseling: Applicants, rather lazy applicants, who feel that a counselor can fit in their shoes and get them to Stanford or Berkeley shell out anything from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000. We’ve assumed the average at Rs. 25,000.

b) Transcripts on the college letterhead (around 15 copies), Bank Statements (15), Affidavit (15) with the sponsor’s name on it (15), and Dispatching them to the university (major expenditure of the lot). This, altogether, should not cost more than Rs. 12,000.

In some cases, students make multiple copies of the Letter of Recommendations (LoRs) and Statement of Purpose (SoP) and unnecessarily burn an extra 500 bucks or so. There may be other charges for like late registration, reinstating canceled scores, sectional reviews, rescheduling which ranges from ($20-$160 each). To avoid these extra charges we suggest to make a good GRE prep study plan and start applications early and well before the deadlines

5. VISA:

While the costs are just a notable factor, it’s really important to know the entire VISA Procedure.

Once you receive your I20 (official document sent by the university which states your stay in the United States and the amount to be spent for the year), you need to pay up the VISA Fee which is $160 followed by the SEVIS fee which is $200

EXPENSES FOR MS IN USA WHILE IN USA

Students who plan to study in universities located in states/cities like California, New York City, Chicago, New Jersey, Washington, Florida, Boston have to keep in mind that owing to the popularity of the location, they might have to spend more for their MS in the US.

Moreover, if you plan to stay alone or with a single roommate in a nice furnished apartment, the expenses certainly will be higher. So find yourself a nice roommate before landing there.

Having said that, it is not only safe to share your apartment with a couple of students in a new place, but the fun factor is also what makes masters abroad all the more interesting.

The two primary expenses after reaching the States are Tuition Fee and Living Expenses.

1. Tuition Fee:

This is a highly variable expense and differs from university to university and is also based on your course. It’s also the biggest expense you’ll be making.  On average, we can consider tuition fees to be USD 40,000 for a two-year MS program. Of course, you may get scholarships or other financial aid which can reduce these costs. You might also want to consider financing your tuition fee with an education loan

2. Living Expenses:

Well, there’s no accurate way to estimate living expenses as factors like

  • Location
  • Apartment Size
  • Number of Roommates and
  • Proximity to the University

drastically vary from individual to individual. However, on average students tend to spend between $500 to $1100 per month which includes everything. If your course length is 2 years you’ll end up spending around $15,000. Most of the students however never end up spending so much as assistantships and internships cover up a lot of these costs.
