All of our courses – A-levels and diplomas – offer clear progression routes through to university courses and the world of work. All students work not only towards their main qualification, but also the Hartpury Certificate.

Our diplomas in our specialist subject areas have the same academic value as A-levels (a two-year Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels) but are more practical and work-related, without missing out on any of the important subject theory.

Our A-levels focus on traditional study skills and students study three A-levels for around six hours per week; that’s more teaching hours than the majority of sixth forms and colleges. They are also supported to access compulsory enrichment with opportunities and clubs relating to their area of interest, ensuring they stand out from the crowd when they apply to university or move on to employment.

Our Access to Higher Education Diplomas enable successful students who want to do a degree but left school or college without the qualifications they needed to move into Higher Education.

A-LEVELS

A-LEVEL IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Have you ever changed the language you used based on where you are and who you are with? Noticed that men and women interact differently? Wondered how children first learn to speak and write?

English Language is both stimulating and interesting as it allows you a chance to actively engage with everyday language, understand how it works and how it has changed over the centuries and evolved to be spoken around the globe.

You’ll be introduced to concepts and methods of the disciplines of English language/linguistics in relation to a wide range of spoken and written forms of English, including digital and multimodal forms.

You will have opportunities to develop your creative writing, study the power of language in politics, business, advertising and comedy and investigate how identity is shaped by a variety of factors including gender and geography.

English Language relates well to all other A-level subjects, particularly English Literature, Psychology, Sociology, PE and Business Studies. As the course involves collecting, presenting and analysing data, the subject would also go well with science subjects like Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths.

Studying English Language can open the door to an array of career paths such as:

  • publishing
  • law
  • journalism
  • film/TV production
  • advertising and marketing
  • teaching
  • linguistics
  • politics
  • public relations
  • and human resources.

At Hartpury, we follow the Edexcel English Language specification. For more information.

Our English Language lecturers are also examiners for the relevant exam boards, further enhancing their provision.HOW TO APPLY FOR THIS COURSE
