There are plenty of books that try to define “Great American Literature”. Some list books from what they consider the most influential authors, a collection of books considered classics and evergreen, or something else entirely. This list, however, is the result of much research and reading, defining which novels have become canonical by being deemed so by Smithsonian anthologists, SAT exam makers or college lit professors.

He is one of the most well-known authors of all time.  Hemingway is credited with helping to launch a new style of writing called “The Lost Generation.” This style focused on people coming back from World War I and writing about the trauma they experienced. This new style was a big change from the writing styles that preceded it, which tended to focus on lessons and morality. Hemingway was so popular as a writer, critics began to call him “The Great Writer” or “The Great American Writer”.

The book was released in 1951 and is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1952. The book follows the life of the narrator, a boy named Jim, who lives with his parents in Ames, Iowa. Summers are spent picking corn alongside his family. In a time before talking movies, the only entertainment that young Jim knows is from reading books from the local library. On his first visit there he meets an older man named Mr. Tarwater, who introduces him to worlds far removed from his own. He convinces Jim to steal a Bible for him from the church he attends with his grandfather. From meeting Mr. Tarwater, Jim is exposed to new ideas about life and what it means to be someone special.

There are certain genres, printings and editions of books that have achieved literary significance in America. The canon of great American literature  has been curated by interpreters and critics over the years, and while it is subjective, there are some volumes that have become part of a shared experience for those who study American literature.

American literature is often used to refer to literature produced in the United States, although that usage is sometimes limited further to works in a particular language or about a particular theme or period.
