George Mason University Traditional BSN Admissions

Mason’s Traditional BSN program is a full-time, pre-licensure program for applicants who do not hold a prior bachelor’s degree. The program provides successful applicants an opportunity to experience nursing in a variety of clinical settings throughout the National Capitol area. The program admits once a year in fall and spaces are limited, therefore the application process is highly competitive.

We currently offer two types of admission for the Traditional BSN program:

  • Direct Admission is a four-year program for incoming freshmen ONLY
  • Second-Gate Admission is a two-year program for pre-nursing Mason students admitted to the university prior to fall 2021 and incoming transfer students ONLY

Please click on the corresponding admission to learn the application and eligibility guidelines for each program.

Decision Notification

The CHHS Office of Student Affairs will send decision letters via email by the end of March. All decisions of the Review Committee are final and cannot be appealed. Common reasons for denial include: incomplete application, nursing pre-requisite/science GPA was not competitive, received a grade below C in the required pre-requisites, and sheer volume – given the number of applications received for the limited number of clinical spaces, other applicants presented stronger applications.

George Mason Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programs

The undergraduate nursing program prepares students to deliver superior nursing care and provide leadership in nursing in the increasingly complex and challenging field of modern health care. Graduates are in demand as professional nurses in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community health and other health care agencies. The program emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention, capitalizing on early detection of potential health problems, health maintenance in ambulatory services, and preparation for the managerial responsibilities of nursing.

The School of Nursing offers various programs to complete the BSN, all of which lead to completion of the objectives of the undergraduate program.

  • Traditional BSN Program: a two-year curriculum following the completion of general education, elective, and nursing prerequisite requirements.
  • Accelerated Second Degree BSN Program: a 12-month, full-time program for students holding a baccalaureate degree outside of nursing and have completed nursing prerequisite requirements.
  • Co-enrollment BSN Program (Non-veteran): allows students to complete a BSN degree online while concurrently enrolled in an Applied Associates of Science nursing degree (AAS Nursing) program at a partner community college.
  • Co-enrollment BSN Program (Veteran): allows military veterans to complete all Mason BSN nursing courses online while concurrently enrolled in their AAS nursing courses at a partner community college.

The Accelerated Second Degree BSN and Traditional BSN Programs must be completed on a full-time basis. Part-time and full-time options are offered for the Co-enrollment Program.

To be admitted to the BSN program, students must complete a pre-nursing curriculum prior to admission and be admitted to junior standing. Traditional and accelerated program students will enter the program in the fall of their junior year and at that point are considered nursing majors. Co-enrollment applicants may enter in the fall or spring.

Application to the BSN program is a process involving two applications: the George Mason University Undergraduate Application and the BSN Departmental Application. (Currently enrolled Mason students need only apply using the BSN Departmental Application.) Acceptance to the nursing program is contingent upon admission to the university, but admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.

Application to the BSN program is a competitive admission process. Prospective applicants must meet all BSN eligibility guidelines at the time of application. Meeting the minimum guidelines does not guarantee admission into the nursing program; it only allows an application to be considered. Students who are interested in pursuing a major in nursing are encouraged to contact the nursing program for more information and to attend an Information Session prior to applying to the nursing major.

Attendance at the first meeting of all nursing courses (lectures, on-campus laboratories, and agency laboratories) is mandatory.
