Program Information
Foothill College begins a new Paramedic Program each Fall. Applications for the upcoming cohort are available beginning October 1st and are due by May 1st.
Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to enter the workforce as competent entry-level Paramedics. Participants have demonstrated successful performance in the cognitive (knowledge), psycomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Graduates are qualified to apply for State and National paramedic licensure.

Paramedic Program Schedule
This course is designed for students who have worked as EMT’s for at least 3 months at full-time capacity.
- During the first quarter, students meet for 8-hour lectures one day a week and 8-hour labs one day a week.
- During the second quarter, students also attend specialty rotations and attend cadaver lab.
- During the third quarter, students meet for lectures and labs.
- During the fourth quarter, students attend ED Clinical rotations.
- In the fifth and sixth quarters, students attend their Field Internship for their final phase of the program. The Field Internship requires between between 480 and 720 hours of patient care, which accounts for the variable length of time in finishing the program.
We make every attempt to maintain this schedule, but in the event of unforseen circumstances, the Program Director reserves the right to make changes.

- About this ProgramThe Paramedic Certificate allows EMS providers who are currently certified as Maryland Emergency Medical Technicians to advance to certification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP).NRPs provide emergency medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness and transports sick and injured persons to medical facilities. They also analyze and take command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient until relieved by proper medical staff. NRPs work with Fire and EMS employees, but their role does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities.

- A Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) is responsible for tasks such as:
- Driving an ambulance to medical emergencies and administering prescribed medical treatment at the site of the emergency or in a specially equipped vehicle.
- Transporting sick and injured persons and providing emotional support
- Conducting or assisting in emergency activities at the scene of an accident, illness or disaster
- Responds to medical emergencies and administering prescribed medical treatment to sick and injured persons at the site of emergency or in a specially equipped vehicle.
- Administring oxygen or intravenous therapy, medications, defibrillation procedures, acquiring, interpreting, and transmitting electrocardiograms and artificial resuscitation. Applying splints to broken bones, controlling hemorrhages, treating minor wounds or abrasions or other procedures as required.

Minimum Prerequisites
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
- Current American Heart Association BLS (CPR) certification.
- Possess a current California EMT certification throughout the Paramedic program.
- A minimum of three months full-time or equivalent part time experience (480 hours minimum) with an EMS provider agency.
- BIOL 40A or equivalent (Anatomy & Physiology with laboratory).
- MATH 105 (Intermediate Algebra) or equivalent college level course . Students may use a high school AP score of 3 or higher. Attach test results to application.
