Excelsior College is a private, non-profit[1] college in Albany, New York. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and comprises five schools: the School of Business and Technology, the School of Health Sciences, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Nursing, and the School of Public Service.

Excelsior College was founded in 1971 by the New York State Board of Regents as its external degree program, known as The Regents External Degree Program (REX). The initial development of the program was funded by major grants from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation. Known as Regents College from 1984 until 1998, it operated as a program of the Board of Regents (which also served as its board of trustees). In April 1998, the Board of Regents granted the school an absolute charter to operate as a private, nonprofit, independent institution. On January 1, 2001, Regents College, required to change its name under the terms of the separation, became Excelsior College (Excelsior means “ever upward” in Latin; it is also the motto of New York).

Excelsior College has more than 36,000 students enrolled in a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

excelsior college accreditation

The college is regionally accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Its nursing programs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN), formerly known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The School of Nursing has twice been designated a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing. Its baccalaureate degree programs in electrical engineering technology and nuclear engineering technology are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc.The bachelor’s degree programs in accounting (NYS CPA Track) and business are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program has been accepted into full membership by the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP).

Excelsior College is exceptionally liberal in accepting transfer credit from other institutions. Essentially, any credit from a regionally accredited institution will be accepted, if the course(s) falls within one of Excelsior’s degree programs. In fact Excelsior, then Regents College, was founded in part precisely to address this question (the non-transferability of credit, leading to uncompleted degrees).[2] The college has recently added time limits: transfer credit will not be accepted if it is more than 5, 7, 10, or 20 years (depending on the specific degree program) prior to the date of enrollment. Even with these restrictions, this is a more liberal policy than most other colleges.

Excelsior College is well known for its flexible, non-resident degree programs.

Sources of college credit that can be used towards an Excelsior College degree program, and to which advisors will refer an Excelsior student, include Excelsior College distance learning courses, courses from other regionally accredited institutions, college-level subject-matter examinations (including CLEP exams, and DSST/DANTES exams), non-collegiate training (including corporate, governmental, and military training) that has been evaluated for college-level credit by the American Council on Education (ACE), and assessments of prior learning portfolios. Unlike most colleges, Excelsior College sets no limitations on the amount of allowable transfer credit.

Excelsior College also offers Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) which are comparable to CLEP and DSST exams and are accepted as a source of credits by many colleges in the United States.

Excelsior College is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. SOC institutions are dedicated to helping servicemembers and their families earn college degrees. Military students can take courses in their off-duty hours at or near military installations in the United States, overseas, and on navy ships.[6] Additionally, Excelsior College has repeatedly been nominated as a top military-friendly school by multiple organizations.

Excelsior College is one of several regionally accredited colleges operating on a model similar to Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey and Charter Oak State College in Connecticut; they are referred to in distance learning circles as “The Big Three”.

“I was in the Army for eight very long years and had credits from about seven different colleges. Excelsior was amazing and they combined all of my courses together and said that I would only have to take 4 courses to graduate. This college is insanely expensive and if it was not for my GI Bill I don’t think I could possibly afford going here, but I am most glad for the opportunity that has opened up for me to get my bachelors finally!”

“Due to obligations arising from military service, post military career, and life in general, I have attended 7 different institutions in the pursuit of my BS. I can honestly say that at excelsior you will have to put in the work as it’s no cake walk. They definitely make up for not having physical class by having you do more work. That aside, I can honestly say this is the first and only institution that I have attended where I can say I have learned things and taken away skills. Each institution I was at previously was a matter of going through the motions. I didn’t seek Excelsior out for this but I was happy to have found it here! While all professors are different, most seemed genuinely interested in delivering the content and challenging you. Every professor at excelsior has always had incredible accessibility/availability, which is huge. If I have to find a “con” I think I would point to two things. First, financial aid isn’t very smooth (not that it ever is) but more so here. Secondly, and arguably less importantly, the “extras” seem to be half-hearted afterthoughts. By that I mean the very few honor societies available are run on a skeleton crew and do not seem serious despite being actual accredited national honor societies (alpha sigma lambda, salute NSCS, etc). For the military, they kindly have dedicated a page with info and such to foster comradery , but that’s about it. They do have veteran centric advisors, so that’s good. Also do not expect to find any clubs or whatnot. Granted excelsior is an online school, but there are social things that could be done. Many/most students here at the college are “life long learners” who hold down families and day jobs so these “extras” probably would not interest most students anyway. All in all, if you want a serious education with competent staff, great platform, and a pretty decent library you will find what you are looking for at Excelsior College. Just don’t go looking for a taste of the Greek life, athletics, or clubs here.”

“The school is attentive, loyal, and care about their students, throughout the entire educational program. For example, if you sign up to a class and you believe it’s too difficult they work with you to change your class immediately. Financial aid is typically attentive in the school as well.”

“I started at excelsior as an Lpn with 2 toddlers. I was able to complete all my classes online while working full time as a night nurse. Had baby #3 and just passed my CPNE first attempt! It’s not impossible you just have to work and put in the efforts! Trust me! A mom of 3, full time night nurse and I was successful!”

“This school is an abomination. It is riddled with hidden fees, advertised as “complete your LPN/VPN” in 18 months. This is a LIE; first of all, thousands of students are lured in, yet only “CPNE” skill out sites exist; thus, you do their online courses and Pearson vue CBT tests (their outlines are pretty useless, they provide two practice exams you cannot print out and use as further outlines, and are very ambiguous as to what part of which text is “fair game”). Also, if you experience a problem with login password at pearsonvue, they are no help in rectifying it, yet personvue refers you back to them, making use registration by phonel, costing more, than online. I am out of the program and going to a school where I will actually speak to a real patient; I hate this program and feel it has damaged many people; I do not feel had I remained I would have been a good nurse unless I learned it on the job.”

“Excelsior college is not a scam. You get exactly what you put into it. I was enrolled in the paramedic to RN program and was successful. Couldn’t have been able to do it any other way. I am currently a Family Nurse Practitioner, working on a postmasters certificate in Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Being successful in the program is not based on past experiences in caring for patients, you just have to do what they need you to do to be successful. Follow the rules and you got it.”

“Unlike many of the reviewers regarding the nursing program, I have nothing but good things to say about my courses and school staff. My academic advisor, instructors, feedback/grading/transcript updates, etc. are all exceptional. I’ve attended 3 other Universities and like this one the most. I highly recommend the school for any active duty military or dependents. The school accepted more credits than AMU and I actually like the process for Tuition Assistance at Excelsior better as well.”misanthropic789

“If you have a bunch of credits from multiple schools, Excelsior is your solution to turning them into a degree. Excelsior is one of the few schools with a minimal (1 course) residency requirement – what that means is that you transfer in courses from a bunch of places, fill in some gaps (courses, CLEP tests, whatever) and get your degree. The Bachelors of Science in Liberal Arts that I earned there was the key to the degrees I needed to earn for my work. I now have an MBA, an MA and a PhD.”

“I have been enrolled for 4 1/2 years and it was a great experience for me. It allowed go to remember how to PUSH THROUGH. I just completed CPNE virtually and successfully passed. I had a lot of family struggles and hardship during those 4 1/2 years which allowed me to pick up where I left off after dealing with family deaths (sister, motherNlaw, brother’s and Father). I paid my annual fee and tested whenever I could which was convenient. The advisors were supportive. I failed the CPNE in person when COVID 19 first hit Néw York in March of 2020, but I wasn’t as prepared as I thought I was with my careplans, the patients were SUPER EASY. I am done now and I really appreciate all the staff at Excelsior College. Read your study guide, watch the Excelsior videos, document just as they say do and YOU CAN DO THIS.”

“Great school! I was able to transfer in all of my military training and Associates in Aviation Technology credits towards my BS degree. I then proceeded to Clep, Dantes and ECE my way through the rest of the degree and finish within 6 months. Why people sit these courses is beyond me when there is a much faster/less expensive way of doing so…did I mention I did not buy one book for my BS degree? EC did not limit the number of these tests I took so I took ALL of them. This allowed me to press on with my MBA and I finished that within a year, I’m now getting ready to enter into a PhD program and will fly through as fast as possible. IMO, these degrees are not really good for anything but society dictates that one must have one to earn more money or to get that job. Just a bunch of worthless information you have to memorize, regurgitate and press onto the next course. EC helped me do that with no reins to hold me back.”
