Our Undergraduate programmes run on a principle of General Engineering for the first two years. In these years, all students take some common courses in subjects which underpin all of engineering, as well as giving you a taste of all the disciplines. This allows you to gain a broad understanding of all of the disciplines, and makes you a more rounded engineer, before deciding to specialise from the third year onward.

You are able to register for our General Engineering degrees, or our discipline-specific degrees, and use subject choices to keep discipline options open as you progress through Levels 1 and 2.

Many students know their desired area of specialism in advance, however if you’ve not yet made your mind up you’re still able to apply for the MEng or BEng Engineering programme and choose your specialism at a later date.

Work Experience

Engineering Work Experience is a new 15 credit 2nd year course designed by the School of Engineering in partnership with the University’s Careers and Employability Service to develop students’ work readiness. The course embeds careers education in the academic curriculum and provides students with a work-related learning experience through employer-hosted consultancy-style projects.

Field Trips

Engineering students also benefit from the University’s location in Energy Capital of Europe through numerous field trips to local companies. Field trips are especially valuable as they allow students to observe how the theory learned in lectures is applied in industry and also because you can learn more about different engineering careers from the industry professionals that you meet.
