Howard Eves was born in Bedford, Nebraska on November 10, 1898. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and received his B.A. in 1922. He later attended Columbia University and Oxford University and received his Ph.D. in 1925 under the direction of G.D. Birkhoff. While attending school, Eves worked as a mathematics teacher from 1919 to 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri, Eugene, Oregon and Omaha, Nebraska. From 1918 to 1927 Eves taught mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania before accepting an appointment as Professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College where he remained for one year before joining the Brown University faculty in Providence, Rhode Island where he taught from 1928 to 1954. In 1954 Eves retired but continued to teach mathematics at Brown until 1974 when he officially retired for a second time becoming Professor Emeritus.
