Eastleigh College in Eastleigh, Hampshire is a further education college providing technical and professional training and apprenticeships to school leavers, in addition to part-time professional courses and part-time leisure courses for adults.

1. French Beginners

Part-Time

French Beginners lessons are held in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Students learn to cope in a variety of everyday situations commonly encountered on visits to France or other French speaking countries.

You will be able to converse in simple terms and cope with everyday situations such as asking the way, shopping, changing money, ordering snacks and drinks, asking for tourist information, booking into hotels and going to the garage/petrol station. Basic grammar will be covered as it arises.

A College Certificate will be awarded on request.

2. Holiday French

Part-Time

Topics covered in Holiday French include basic greetings, ordering food and drinks, and asking for and giving directions.

You will also learn everyday things such as saying where you come from and what your job is. You will also be able to tell the time and recognise numbers 1 to 100.

You will gain the confidence to speak French whilst on holiday.

A College Certificate will be awarded on request.

3. Holiday Italian

Part-Time

5. Introduction to British Sign Language

Part-Time

This BSL course will assist students to communicate more effectively with deaf people. It may also assist students to gain work, or progress their career, in care, education or any other area where an ability to sign is required.

Please note that this course is non vocational and does not lead to a qualification.

Italian Beginners

Part-Time

Lessons are held in a relaxed atmosphere. Students learn to cope in a variety of everyday situations commonly encountered on visits to Italy, such as asking the way, shopping for food and talking about yourself. You will also learn something about the life and culture – all of which will be useful when you travel to Italy.

A College Certificate will be awarded on request.

6. Makaton Follow-up

Part-Time

The Makaton Follow-Up course will complete your tuition of the Makaton Core Vocabulary and as a consequence, broaden your signing skills. You will revise the signs and symbols previously learned and receive tuition for the signs and symbols in Stages 5-8 of the Makaton Core Vocabulary. In addition, sessions will explore meeting the needs of Makaton Users by adapting our own language, how to identify individual signing styles that you might encounter, and when to improve the signing skills of Makaton Users. The Makaton Follow-Up course will help effectively with a broad range of different Makaton Users.

The Makaton Follow-Up course is 8 weeks in length. A certificate of attendance will be awarded to those students who have attended at least 80% of the course.

7. Makaton Level 1

Part-Time

The Makaton Level 1 course provides a very practical introduction to using the Makaton Language Programme. During the 4 week course you will learn around 135 signs and symbols from the early Stages of the Makaton Core Vocabulary.

Other sessions also include how to use Makaton in everyday situations at home or work and hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use. You will discuss how Makaton differs from British Sign Language and receive an overview of other forms of assisted communication. At the end of the Makaton Level 1 course you will have the confidence and skills to begin to use Makaton in your daily interactions with children and adults.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to students upon successful completion of the course.

8. Makaton Level 2

Part-Time

The Makaton Level 2 course is 4 weeks and aims to further develop the signing skills that you learned on the Level 1 course. It teaches the signs and symbols for Stages 3, 4 and some of the Additional Stage of the Makaton Core Vocabulary.

Other sessions also include lots of opportunities to practise using the signs and symbols taught. Together with ideas for implementing Makaton use at home or work; an in-depth look at symbols and their uses and research supporting signs and symbol use are also covered. At the end of the Makaton Level 2 course you will have the confidence and skills to use Makaton in your daily interactions with children and adults.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to students upon successful completion of the course.

9. Spanish Beginners

Part-Time

Spanish Beginners lessons are held in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Students learn to cope in a variety of everyday situations commonly encountered on visits to Spain or other Spanish speaking countries.

A variety of teaching methods will be used including whole class, group work, team work, pair work, role play, games and multi media resources. A course book will be used to supplement the course and help with simple grammar. Some homework will be set each week.

You will be able to converse in simple terms and cope with everyday situations such as asking the way, shopping, changing money, ordering snacks and drinks, asking for tourist information, booking into hotels, going to the garage/petrol station. Basic grammar will be covered as it arises.

On campus

The College has three industrial-sized kitchens which are all equipped with modern, up-to-date facilities, and these serve a newly refurbished restaurant, East Avenue, which can sit up to 60 people. Alongside experienced lecturers, this provides students with a fresh and modern environment which will provide them with the skills to confidently progress into the workplace. 

Students are able to enter various competitions during their course, which may include tasks such as taking over hotel kitchens for a weekend or running gala events. The College has great employment links with local businesses, and holds a partnership with Holiday Inn as their official training provider. Speakers regularly attend the College to inform students of the different types of careers available to them, coming from backgrounds including the Navy, EHO, and AA inspection.
