The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is offered with the WSU College of Nursing in Spokane, Tri-Cities, or Yakima Washington. A consortium partnership with Eastern Washington University (EWU), Washington State University (WSU) and Whitworth University enables students to complete undergraduate degree requirements and nursing prerequisite courses at one of the participating universities before applying to WSU College of Nursing to finish the BSN degree.

Students applying from EWU have priority admission to the BSN program. Typically, freshmen enrolling at EWU need at least two years of coursework to prepare to apply to the BSN program. Students who are admitted will take an additional two years of coursework through WSU College of Nursing to complete the BSN degree.

EWU Pre-Nursing

Preparation for the WSU College of Nursing

Application Process

See WSU’s Full Timeline

Admission to WSU College of Nursing is competitive. WSU College of Nursing admits approximately 90 students each semester. Not all students from EWU who have completed undergraduate degree requirements and nursing prerequisite courses will be admitted to the BSN program. A majority of the students admitted come from the partner universities. A small number of seats are available for transfer students coming from other schools.

Due to the limited number of admissions to the BSN program, students are encouraged to apply to multiple nursing schools to increase their chances of being admitted to a program leading to a degree.

To apply to the WSU College of Nursing through EWU, students must complete three quarters of full-time course work and at least 36 credits at EWU. Students who do not meet this requirement may apply to the BSN program as a transfer student through WSU.

To Apply

You can apply to WSU College of Nursing and other nursing schools through NursingCAS (Nursing’s Centralized Application Service).

BSN Admission Criteria

BSN Prerequisites and EWU Graduation Requirements

Prerequisites and Graduation Requirements

All nursing prerequisites and EWU graduation requirements must be completed prior to starting courses at the WSU College of Nursing. Students should carefully plan out their schedule from the time of entry to EWU through the completion of all requirements. Some courses have prerequisites, must be taken in a specific order and/or may only be offered once a year. Planning and academic advising is essential.

BSN Prerequisites

Graduation Requirements

Other Requirements

The Anatomy/Physiology series (BIOL 232, 233 and 234 at EWU) must be completed at one school.

Biology, chemistry and statistics courses used as BSN program prerequisites can be no more than 5 years old at the time of application to WSU College of Nursing. This helps to ensure that students are well prepared to begin the upper-division nursing courses.

Advance Placement (AP), CLEP and International Baccalaureate (IB) scores may not be used to meet the BSN program prerequisites.

GPA Requirements

3.0 GPA minimum cumulative in the BSN prerequisite courses, with a minimum grade of 2.0 in any individual course.

Pass/Fail grades and AP test scores are not accepted to meet BSN prerequisite requirements.

3.0 GPA minimum cumulative in all college-level course work from all schools attended. Successful applicants generally have GPAs well above 3.0.

TEAS Test

All students must complete the Test of Essential Skills (TEAS) test.

TEAS information and test dates

Practical Experience

Students must complete 50 hours of practical experience in the health care field (volunteer or paid). Hours must be completed at the time of the interview, and no older than 3 years of application.

For more information and a list of practical experience opportunities, see our Practical Experience page.

Transcripts

To have your EWU nursing evaluation processed and sent to the WSU College of Nursing, EWU must have official, updated transcripts for all colleges and universities you have attended.

For the application through NursingCAS, you MUST send Official Transcripts to NursingCAS. To do this, you MUST have the bar code number assigned specifically to you by NursingCAS. To find the bar code, you first input the colleges you have attended. Once that is completed, you will need to look at the Academic History portion of the application where you will find the list of Colleges Attended, and to the right of the college name, you will find the ‘Order’ button. Select it and a window will pop up with two tabs. Select Option 2: Order a Mailed Paper Transcript. This is where you will select the blue button ‘Download Transcript ID Form’ to find the bar code you will need when ordering Official Transcripts from each College. The bar code is located in the top right corner of the downloaded form. Once you download the form, select ‘I will do this later.’ to close the pop up window. You only need to do this once because you will only have one bar code assigned specifically to you. This is important because it is the ONLY way your official transcript will be associated to your application once it is received by NursingCAS. If you have questions, please contact your Academic Advisor.

For more information about submitting and evaluating transcripts, see our Transcripts page.

Interview

All students invited to this stage of the process must complete an in-person interview.

Writing Portfolio

WSU requires a writing diagnostic test to determine whether or not your writing abilities are sufficient to handle the writing demands of upper-division courses and courses in your major.
