Drafter Entry Level Jobs

A drafter is a person who prepares technical drawings of buildings, equipment, or other structures. Drafters use computers to create their drawings and use CAD software to create and edit the drawings. Drafters create blueprints, site plans, structural engineering diagrams, piping diagrams, electrical diagrams and many others. Some drafters are also responsible for writing specifications for projects.

Drafters generally need a high school diploma or equivalent, though some may have an associate’s degree in drafting or a related field. The work requires solid communication skills as well as a strong mathematical background. Many drafters enter the field through on-the-job training at small companies or through vocational schools that offer certificate programs in drafting.

What Does an Entry-Level Drafter Do?
An entry-level drafter uses computer programs such as CAD and AutoCAD to create scale drawings for construction projects or product manufacturing. In this job, your duties include using engineering plans to create diagrams that builders and manufacturers will then apply to their construction or production projects. You may also work on very detailed designs, such as an electronic switchboard. Your responsibilities also include incorporating the designs of the architect, if applicable, and information about all necessary codes and regulations. An entry-level drafter may work on one aspect of the drawings under the direction of a manager.
