Is it true that hunting classes in texas could be taken online? This is the most expected question these days. Many people are starting to search for a comprehensive hunting course that they can take online. Does such an opportunity really exist? The answer is yes.

The online-only course is restricted to persons who are 17 years of age and older.

Online-only courses are designed for Texas residents. 

Certification

Upon successful completion, you may choose to print out a temporary Hunter Education Certificate from your chosen vendor site.

Your permanent Hunter Education Certificate is available once your private information is securely and confidentially uploaded to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department by the vendor. This may take several weeks, but your temporary certificates are good for several months or more. You will be notified by email once your permanent certification card is available.

If you have not seen an email after a month has elapsed, then go to Print A Certification Card.

The following three (3) options are based on age. Choose the one  that works best for you, a family member or friend inquiring about the course. Minimum age for certification is 9 years. (See FAQs.)

OPTION 1.   Under Age 17 (In person)

CLASSROOM COURSE

  • REGISTER for a CLASSROOM COURSE
  • No preparation required; $15 paid directly to instructor at in-person classroom course. (See instructions online for payment preference.)
  • Description: 6 hours of basic instruction in firearm and hunting safety, legal and ethical hunting practices, nomenclature and a final exam. Class hours may be extended to cover added topics.
  • Added fees for range use may be required.

OPTION 2.   Under Age 17 (In person)

  • REGISTER for a FIELD COURSE, first!
  • Prepare for Field Course by completing one of two *FREE* ONLINE COURSES; $15 paid directly to instructor at in-person field course. (See instructions online for payment preference.) 
  • NOTE: Do NOT go to ‘pay-for’ online courses accessed thru search engines.
  • Description: 4 hours (min.) of field instruction including ethics discussion, simulated or live-fire activities, “hunter skills” trail and final exam.
  • Added fees for range use may be required.

OPTION 3.   Age 17 or Over (17+ ONLY)

ONLINE-ONLY COURSE

  • Go to: Hunter Education Online-Only Courses and register with any of the approved Online Providers.
  • Fees (vary) paid to Provider (online payment).
  • Description: Online-only courses cover the knowledge it takes to be a safe, responsible hunter.
  • Temporary 90-day certification is available from Online Provider. Provider uploads data within 21 days and an email link is sent from Texas Parks and Wildlife once permanent certification is available.

“Hunter Education Deferral.”  (17 + ONLY)

Cost: $10. Available wherever hunting licenses are sold. Allows hunters age 17 or older to defer completion of hunter education for up to a year, as long as the person is accompanied* by a hunter who has: 1) completed hunter education, or 2) is exempt from the requirement (born before September 2, 1971). A Deferral may only be obtained once and is only valid until the end of the license year purchased. A hunter who has been convicted of or received deferred adjudication for violating the mandatory hunter education requirement may not apply for a deferral.

How much does the Texas Hunter Ed Course cost?

The Texas Hunter Ed Course fee is $19.95. Hunters over 17 will also pay a $5.25 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department fee.

Is it safe to enter my credit card information online?

How does the auto-extension feature work?

The Texas Hunter Ed Course is valid for only 90 days from the time of registration and payment. If you are not able to complete this course within 90 days, the course will be automatically renewed for another 30 days. Your credit card will be charged 10 for each renewal. You need education if you were born on or after Sept. 2, 1971.

How long will it take to complete the course?

Typically it takes about 3 hours to go through the online course, excluding any quizzes and/or exams and restudying that you may choose to do.

Do I have to complete the course all at once?

You may complete the course at your own pace. The course can be completed in one sitting or completed a little at a time over several days. All pay-up-front courses are available for 90 days from time of registration and payment.

What is the minimum age to take this online course?

You must be at least 9 years old to take this online course.

The Texas Hunter Ed Course is approved and accepted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Is my Texas Hunter Education Certificate accepted elsewhere?

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Texas Hunter Education Certificate. Quizzes and/or Exams

I failed a unit quiz. Have I failed the course?

If you fail a unit quiz, you must restudy the unit and take the quiz again until you pass. You must score at least 70% on the unit quizzes to pass.

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Hunter Education Certification Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.back to topics

How do I get my Texas Hunter Education Certificate?

A Texas Hunter Safety Course is required if you are born on or after September 2, 1971. You can now take the class portion of the Texas hunter education requirement online.

Troubleshooting

What does the message “Your session has expired due to inactivity” mean?

If you have not been active within the course for more than 15 minutes, you will automatically be logged out of your session. A notice stating, “Your session has expired due to inactivity” will appear at the top of the course. Log back in, and you can continue interacting with the course. Your progress will have been recorded, and you should be able to continue where you left off in the course.

What happens if I get disconnected from the Internet?

If you are disconnected from the Internet, simply log back in and pick up where you left off. Your progress will be saved.
