Descriptive statistics is a set of techniques used to summarize a data set and make it easier for us as researchers to understand what our data looks like. Descriptive statistics give us a sense of what the data looks like on average (i.e., mean, median), but they don’t tell us anything about things like variability or outliers in our data set (i.e., standard deviation). For example: Let’s say we have 100 students who took my survey on course satisfaction at university; let’s say that they all answered 5 questions on course satisfaction with an average score of 80%. That tells us something about these 100 students’ average course satisfaction—but it doesn’t tell us anything about how much variability there was between those scores; in other words, we don’t know if there were some students who scored really high or really low compared with everyone else!
