The Idaho State University School of Nursing Traditional Nursing undergraduate degree is well-suited to students with no prior nursing experience who seek their first degree in nursing. This program is also well suited to students who are currently licensed practical nurses who seek their baccalaureate degree. This program is four semesters in length and admits 80 students every year: 40 students for the Fall Semester and 40 students for the Spring Semester. Classes are taught primarily from the Pocatello campus through a hybrid-course model, integrating face to face and online formats into all courses. Clinical experiences are offered in the simulation lab and at a variety of off-campus settings, including community hospitals, community health facilities, service agencies, and schools.

The Traditional Nursing program provides learning opportunities for undergraduate students to prepare them for the role of the professional nurse in today’s complex health care system and to take the National Council Licensure Examination Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) to secure licensure as a registered nurse.

The School of Nursing offers two program applications each year every fall and spring semester for admission the following spring or fall semester, respectively. The School of Nursing will admit 40 students for the Fall Semester and 40 students for the Spring Semester. The student’s plan of study to complete the traditional baccalaureate nursing program varies depending when a student is admitted to start the nursing program.

Typically, students will complete the upper-division nursing courses in the third or fourth year of their undergraduate degree. Please see the Traditional Program Nursing Curriculum for the upper-division nursing courses and the structure of the 4-semester nursing program.

Completion of the undergraduate program provides the graduate with the abilities to:

The College of Southern Idaho (CSI) Associate of Science in Nursing Program (ASNP) provides a high quality and affordable education to students of Southern Idaho and beyond. We create a welcoming environment that is responsive to students and emphasizes their active role in the learning process. Learning is a continuum where students rely on knowledge gained in previous non-nursing and nursing courses to facilitate understanding and application of information. The curriculum fosters learning opportunities that promote critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgement to prepare graduates for entry-level practice as a professional nurse in today’s complex health care system. The program admits students during both fall and spring semester. Courses are delivered face-to-face and hybrid with clinical experiences offered in the simulation lab and a variety of off-campus health care settings.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is core certified and receives an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree. The graduate qualifies to make an application to a state board of nursing to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination. Passing the NCLEX-RN examination enables the RN to practice in the state where the exam was taken and the opportunity to transition into a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

CSI nursing program application

A history of a misdemeanor and/or felony within (5) years may prevent admission and progression while in the program.  If admitted, graduation from the ASNP does not result in approval to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination.  Inquiries related to approval to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination are directed to the state board of nursing where the individual plans to register for licensure.

You are Not Alone for more information.  You can take the TEAS Exam on-campus at a CSI Testing Center or at a PSI National Testing Center.  A copy of the ATI TEAS study guide is available at the CSI library and at our outreach centers.  Students who are out-of-state or remotely must select either TEAS at ATI or TEAS at PSI option. The ATI TEAS can be taken one (1) time every six (6) months; you are encouraged to reference ATI TEAS Prep Products to prepare for the exam; TEAS adjusted individual score must be greater than or equal 58.7% to receive points.

Prospective students must apply and be accepted by the College before making an application to the ASNP. Acceptance to the College does not guarantee acceptance into the ASNP. Official transcripts, from other colleges/universities must be on file with the Office of the Registrar prior to the ASNP application deadline or the application will not be considered.

The program admits both Fall and Spring semesters.

The first semester nursing course,  NURR 110 Fundamentals of Nursing, is a 16-week course offering theory/lab on Monday and Wednesday and clinical on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.

The second semester nursing course, NURR 114 Beginning Medical/Surgical Nursing, is a 16-week course offering theory/lab on Monday and Wednesday and clinical Tuesday or Thursday.

The third semester nursing course, NURR 214 Advanced Medical/Surgical Nursing, is a 16-week course offering theory/lab on Tuesday and Thursday and clinical on Monday or Wednesday.

The fourth semester nursing courses, NURR 215 Maternal/Newborn & Pediatric Nursing, is an 16-week course offering theory/lab on Thursday and clinical Monday or Wednesday; the NURR 217 Capstone is a 16-week hybrid course focused on NCLEX-RN examination preparation and transition to nursing practice whereby students complete clinical hours with an assigned registered nurse in an approved health care organization.

Traditional ASNP Admission

The deadline for Fall candidacy is May 6th by 12:00 p.m.  Spring candidacy is November 15th.

The ASNP attempts to accept fifty-six (56) applicants each Fall and Spring semester. Given the competitive nature and rigor of the program, acceptance is ranked according to the criteria identified on the Traditional ASNP Admission Score Sheet. There is not a waitlist; students not accepted will need to reapply.

All applicants must possess a current CNA certification. 

The program requires 73 credits; 40 non-nursing and 33 nursing, see Traditional ASNP Academic Plan.

Pre-requisites must be completed prior to application, whereas co-requisites may be completed prior to or during the identified semester; students are not allowed to progress in the program if co-requisites are not completed prior or during the identified semester.  All required non-nursing and nursing courses must be completed with a “C” or better; see ASNP Student Handbook related to the percentage qualifying as a C while in the ASNP.

Required math (MATH 153 Elementary Statistics is preferred as it meets BSN requirements) and science courses must be completed within the last five (5) years.

The ASNP Application and identified documents, on the application form, must be submitted at the time of application or the application will not be considered.

Licensed Practical Nursing to ASNP
