What’s new and what continues to be important at Colby?
A highly selective liberal arts college in Waterville, Maine, Colby
College is characterized by a diverse, tightly connected community of
approximately 1,800 students who are encouraged to take intellectual
risks and are supported and challenged by a dedicated faculty of
world-class scholars. Passionate, intelligent, and deeply curious, Colby

Colby has an enduring commitment to social justice. Colby students
instituted the first anti-slavery society on an American college campus,
in 1833, and in 1871 Colby became the first previously all-male
college institution in New England to admit women, a century before
many other schools.
The College is committed to academic excellence and intellectual
exploration and offers research opportunities across the curriculum.
Students sample courses from all four of Colby’s academic divisions
to gain exposure to diverse disciplines and to discover unexpected
passions. Colby’s professors inspire, mentor, and empower students
before, during, and after their time on the Mayflower Hill campus.
Student-faculty interactions range from dinner in professors’ homes
to full-time summer research assistantships and coauthor credits on
articles and books.
COLBY’S 20TH PRESIDENT
President David A. Greene began his tenure as Colby’s 20th president
July 1, 2014. Through strategic planning and the creation of academic
partnerships, Greene aims to provide more opportunities for student
research and internships, to deepen the already strong connections
between students and faculty, to bolster the relationship between
Colby and Waterville, and to increase awareness about Colby among a
broader range of prospective students.
DAVIS SCIENCE CENTER
Opened in July 2014, the center houses the Computer Science,
Mathematics and Statistics, and Psychology departments and features
the latest technology and group workspaces.
CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES
The center supports student-faculty collaborations and community
engagement through events, volunteer opportunities, and research
and travel grants. Students can also take advantage of humanities
lab courses—courses sponsored by the center that emphasize
experiential learning in the arts and humanities through observation,
experimentation, and skill-building practices.
COLBY COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART
The best college art museum in the country, the Colby College Museum
of Art features works by Mary Cassatt, James McNeill Whistler,
Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and
Alex Katz, among many other notable artists. With more than 100
classes across the curriculum using its galleries for teaching and
learning in 2013-14, the museum is a hub of cross-disciplinary study,
integrating the visual arts and artistic expression in the heart of the
liberal arts experience.
CARBON-NEUTRAL CAMPUS
In 2013 Colby became the fourth college in the country to achieve
carbon neutrality. Committed to environmental sustainability for
decades, Colby uses electricity from 100-percent-renewable sources,
has 11 LEED-certified buildings (with others pending), uses geothermal
heating and cooling in two buildings, and operates a biomass plant that
burns sustainably harvested wood to heat most buildings.
FINANCIAL AID
Colby meets 100 percent of need as calculated by the College and
does not include loans in financial aid packages. Financial aid is
transferable to Colby-approved off-campus study programs.
The Colby experience is defined by commitment to a global education.
Nearly 70 percent of students study abroad, choosing from more
than 140 approved programs. The curriculum includes U.S. and
international diversity distribution requirements and a three-semester
foreign language requirement. International students, who bring diverse
perspectives to the classroom, make up 9 percent of the student body.
Students embrace opportunities on and off campus. They attend
evening lectures by visiting scholars and practitioners, participate in
civic engagement opportunities such as mentoring in local schools,
intern in Maine and beyond, engage in social activism with area
nonprofits and at the State House in nearby Augusta, and conduct
research on Maine’s coast on topics as varied as invasive crabs and
offshore wind power. Opportunities to learn experientially are as
diverse as the students themselves.

The 2020 annual ranking of U.S. News & World Report rates it tied for the 11th best liberal arts college overall in the U.S., 16th for “Best Value”, tied at 18th for “Most Innovative” and tied at 48th for “Best Undergraduate Teaching” among liberal arts colleges. Washington Monthly ranked the college 37th in 2019 among 214 liberal arts colleges in the U.S. based on its contribution to the public good, as measured by social mobility, research, and promoting public service. Forbes in 2019 rated Colby 75th overall in its America’s Top Colleges ranking of 650 military academies, national universities, and liberal arts colleges, and 32nd among liberal arts colleges. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance places Colby at 46th in its 2019 ranking of 149 best value liberal arts colleges in the United States. Colby College is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education.
In 2016, Niche gave the college an “A+” for academics, administration, food, campus quality and diversity, a “B” for campus housing, health & safety, and athletics, and a “C+” for local city, and off-campus housing.In Niche’s official rankings, the college placed 16th for liberal arts and 46th overall.
