The MSc Clinical Medicine (Speciality Medicine) has been developed by practicing NHS Consultants and Health Academics in consultation with NHS Trust Partners. The course is designed for Medical Doctors and other Healthcare Professionals who are looking to develop and refine their clinical, leadership and research skills and develop understanding of effective teamwork and best practice. The MSc Clinical Medicine (Speciality Medicine) aims to enhance innovation, leadership, teaching, learning and research skills, thereby, facilitating personal and professional development and strengthening participants’ ability to bring about positive change, solve problems effectively, and ensure patient safety. 

The Speciality Masters will be differentiated from the other Masters routes by its structure, by the advanced declaration of the chosen speciality, a demonstration of a deepening understanding of subspecialty medicine within modules 7HW068 (Specialist Practise 1) and 7HW069 (Specialist Practise 2) and a deeper focus on a specific aspect of the declared speciality within the Masters dissertation in module 7HW015. The title of the award will be determined by the sub-speciality area of medicine chosen to explore within modules 7HW068 and 7HW069. This will be negotiated with the student at the outset of the course by completion of module 7WB005. 

This course has a strong emphasis on the evaluation and development of both clinical practice, research, and encourages participants to reflect critically on workplace experiences and learning. For participants, the course aims to provide a clear framework, which supports CPD, recognition of prior learning, and work based learning.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.

Entry onto the Foundation in Clinical Sciences/Medicine course provides students a unique and exciting opportunity to study science and health modules in preparation for future progression onto the BSc (Hons) Clinical Sciences and to support an application to Medical School.

Typically 40 offers to study Medicine are made to Foundation in Clinical Sciences/Medicine students each year.

The course is aimed at a wide range of students including those with a science background or with non-science qualifications.

The aim of the Foundation year is to provide you with an integrated knowledge and understanding of science and health-related issues, putting you in an excellent position to apply to medical school or a variety of courses leading to careers within the health sector or pharmaceutical industries.

On completion of the Clinical Sciences Foundation Year, many students have progressed to Medical School and the BSc (Hons) in Clinical Sciences. Students have also accessed many healthcare sciences programmes leading to careers including:

An important focus of the Foundation Year is to encourage progression into medicine and healthcare education. In addition to progression onto the BSc (Hons) in Clinical Sciences, we have developed a partnership with Sheffield Medical School so that the Foundation year provides a formal opportunity for widening participation students to apply to enter the MBChB at Sheffield.

In addition to our formal relationship with Sheffield Medical School, the high quality of our Foundation Year means that it is also recognised by other medical schools. Students have applied successfully to Leeds, Hull York (HYMS), Brighton and Sussex (BSMS), and Norwich (UEA) medical schools. Additional entry requirements

Applications will be screened for evidence of academic potential, motivation and interpersonal skills plus the experiences and qualities necessary for a future healthcare professional. All shortlisted candidates will be invited to a selection day.

Minimum IELTS at 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each sub-test) or the equivalent.

In the Foundation Year in Clinical Sciences/Medicine, you will be provided with the biological, chemical and numeracy skills required to progress onto the BSc (Hons) Clinical Sciences programme. 

You will consider health concepts from a psychosocial perspective, the role and responsibilities of health and social care professionals and consolidate key skills, allowing you to make an informed decision about your future career pathway. 

Students are assessed by examinations, self-directed learning, presentations and group work.

Successful completion of the foundation year will allow you to progress onto the BSc (Hons) Clinical Sciences course.
